I sometimes think that I was born in another time. I grew up listening to Toto, Roxette, The Heart, Starship, Fra Lippo Lippi, New Kids On The Block, etc. I can say that the songs of the past had a different feel to them. I've always loved the lyrics of the songs. Nowadays, I could only appreciate a few songs as many songs now are just too shallow. A lot of songs that just keep on playing on and on in radio stations simply mean nothing if you listen to them closely.
So how about you? do you like songs simply basing on the tune? Or do you listen more to what the song conveys? :)

For me, to a certain extent I appreciate a song for it's musical value. Meaning the instrumental part of the music. However, just like you, the part of the song that really draws me in is the lyrics. I am the kind of person that sings along to the music once I've heard a song a few times and I learn the lyrics. So it is really the thoughts and feelings of the song that I really like.
When I was younger I listened to a lot more rock music than I do now. Today I listen to oldies and country because those seem to be the only genres of music that I can really differentiate the lyrics in.

I listen to oldies more nowadays as there are a lot of genres now that I just cannot fathom. I do like many songs now, ones that get me grooving, but I can't seem to understand those who love songs that just seem to scream everything out. Screams and high pitched guitar playing plus erratic and I-don't-know-what kind of drum playing = noise. hehehe

I am usually attracted to a song's melody at first, then I check out the lyrics. It's usually the melody that catches my attention. Some songs have great lyrics but crappy melody, that's why I don't usually listen to them. If great lyric writing and melody goes, then that would be a band called "Rush", I don't know if you heard of them or you might even like them. haha!

I also love old songs because they are more sweet and meaningful. Well I prefer wonderful melodies than lyrics, but when it comes to old songs, lyrics and melodies go together, the meaning of old songs are more clear, emotional and sweet than today's type of music.

I was a hobby to listen to any song or lyrics of the song and listen guitar instrumental, but it was just a song choice that I like. Most current commercial songs began removing the old track the origin of the more comfortable hearing and it affects the previous musicians started out, they're the best for me. Their musical instruments over rock never die and I like it.
Great discussion..keep share ;)

the first thing that catches my attention is the melody. whenever i hear a song that sounds good, i search for its lyrics. i do that so that whenever i hear it again, i could sing along to the song and not just blurt out any random words.
