I have a 4 year old Golden Retriever...her name is Emma Sue. I use flea medicine on her once a month. Although last month I used Frontline but the few months before I used a different product that I had gotten a free sample for in the mail and I can't remember the name of it. She has a problem with still having fleas! I am not sure why this is happening if I use a flea medicine on her every month! I need help in solving this problem please! I am not sure if they are in the carpet or what. We vaccuum once or twice a week and I am hoping after I give her the flea medicine again this month, this issue will stop. Is there anyway of getting rid of the fleas? Please help! Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!!!

I would use the Brewers Yeast bitter kind. I would also suggest flea killer for your carpet. Feed your dog a Brewers Yeast every day. You can get it at walmart in the Vitamin Isle. It will keep the fleas and ticks off and make their coat shiny. The non-bitter kind just makes thier coat shiny. The bitter kind is what my wife and I use.

One other thing. Humans can take it too. It will keep the bugs off you. Maybe even make your hair shine.

My wife is a Pro Groom , she uses Burgham Pro Plus Fles and Tick Shampoo, kills them lil suckers . You can also get from your vet a salve like substance that is placed behind the ears. If your dog/ pet is getting fleas like you r saying you might have to spry your house also...
REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U..

I found that Frontline is one of the few flea products that actually works, none of the other brands ever did. Unfortunately it doesn't work immediately especially if you have a bad flea problem. You say you are vacuuming the carpet, are you also vacuuming every piece of furniture in your house and everywhere Emma Sue goes? Are you also using flea killer sprays in your yard outside where the fleas live too? It's an awful pain to get rid of fleas, I know, but it can be done. It is a lot of work though and it can take a lot of money too. Good luck, I hope you can get rid of them.

Ya know...I haven't vaccuumed the furniture or sprayed the yard! Thank you for suggesting that, I didn't thihk of that. I have thought about using a indoor bomb that you can set off in the rooms Emma goes into. I am hoping this next round of flea medicine will help a little bit. I am also hoping during the Winter months, they just disappear!

Is that product as harmful for our pets as frontline is?

I'm glad you asked this question jterrock. I think this is abad year for fleas. My dog has frontline and wears a flea collar and still has fleas. I bathe him but that is good only for about a day. I just saw the response about the clove oil, maybe I will try that. I would be careful with the garlic because garlic is not good for dogs and could cause digestive upset or worse,

I have had really good luck with frontline too....I have a huge long haired dog and he is flea free with frontline...
Hoever I also know that garlic works...
Mix some real garlic (not the powderes stuff) in with your dogs food...the fleas hate it....but some dogs are picky eaters....mine eats it but he eats anything.

I have a pomeratnian that has fleas. I did bathh her with flea shampoo and not sure it worked. I do have a flea comb that I try to get them out with. I see a lot of flea dirt, but no fleas, so maybe it did kill them for a bit anyway. I will have to try other ways of getting rid of them, as I can't afford frontline, and yet I have used it many times and I know it really works. I have a bichon, but she doesn't seem to have fleas as she is short haired, and there is no place for them to hide. I do need to get my dogs groomed so I think once I do that, I will get rid of the fleas, at least for awhile. I will have try a few of the suggestions though and see if they work, except for the garlic, as I will pass on that one.Take care, and happy mylotting.

My husband had a Golden when we married. From what I remember, they have very tender skin, so even if there are no fleas, their skin may still "itch". I have complete confidence in Frontline. Maybe a soothing shampoo is in order? I remember we used an oatmeal shampoo bath, and after that, Nick felt great!

Are you sure your house is "frea-free"? It could be that with the dip at the vet, she got rid of the fleas, but they just jumped right back on her when she came home. Maybe a flea-bomb is in order for your home? Just an idea. She sounds like a very sweet pooch!

Thank you all again for all the comments, they sure helped out a lot! I am happy that I am not the only one who has a flea problem. Well, not me, but Emma Sue. LOL. I just recently had her groomed and she had a flea shampoo and dip. But, I still see some of the cridders crawling around on her at times. Her belly is scabby from the flea bites, poor girl! :-( I did take her to the vet about a month ago, and then gave her some pills to get rid of the pain and the redness on her belly. But, it makes her soooooo thirsty, then she can't hold her bladder during the night at times and she pee'd on the floor once. She is such a mess. I will be glad when Winter comes along so it freezes and then the fleas die off. Emma sue is just like my baby, so I feel bad for her. I am going to try some of the natural remedies I think...and I am sure she will be good to go after that! It's great to know I can get some really good advice here if I need it and make some friends along the way! Thank you SO much! It sure has helped!

Feed her garlic and brewer's yeast. NutroMax brand petfood already has it in the food.
You can purchase cedar chips and lavender flowers, put them in a pillow case, sew it up, and put that on her bed. That should take care of pests and make her bed smell great. Also, you can purchase citrolella, cedar, and/or rosemary essential oils. Rosemary essential oil has an added benefit of likely being good for your dog's coat. What you do is add a few drops to the handful of shampoo that you use on your dog when you bathe her. These essential oils act as repellents, not just of fleas, but of other pests. None of these things are expensive: my favorite online place to purchase herbs and essential oils and such things is mountainroseherbs.com. They also have a catalog that they will send to you, if you prefer that.
I've always used the above methods in a preventative manner and have never had a problem with fleas. Good luck!

I wanted to update on how Emma Sue is doing. I went to the vet and got her a pill that works for 24 hours. It got rid of the fleas! I also sprayed down on the carpet and furniture with a aerosol spray that is suppose to work up to a couple months. It kills the fleas and the eggs. As of now, she has no fleas, and I am hoping this will work for a long time to come! Thank you all for all of your responses! I enjoy reading them and it was nice to get so much feedback! Thank you again!!!
