Why is society so concerned with celebrities?

I've often wondered why society is so deeply interested and concerned in the lives of the rich and famous. I have heard so much about the recent incident at the VMA's between Taylor Swift and Kanye West that it makes me sick. I do agree that what West did was unmistakeably rude, however, why should I care? I know neither of the parties involved. Average people are rude and cruel to others every single day, sometimes much more severely than what happened on the VMAs. Why do we give so much thought into that issue, but not the average person's, and why are people so defensive for a person they've never met, and probably never will?

Hi, Speak! I never really understood this. I admire many talents, but the person behind the talent doesn't mean much at all. I do admire people who have become celebrities because of their great moral, ethical accomplishments, and I'm sometimes a little curious about the perople who do these tings, but I don't get the whole groupie thing.
