I would take it with me too..You never know when it might come in handy. Like directions to some place, places to visit and anything else that might need to look up.. Tell hubby that it wont interfer with him and the vacation.. Heck you wont have to unpack unless it is a must..Jsut remember it is a vacation with the hubby so no logging in on Mylot....LOL..Have a great trip and have fun...

i was thinking to log on mylot at the time. now i still don't know if i should take it or not. thanks and best regards.

Hmmmmm, I would probably take a laptop to York, but not to Ayia Napa! It is good to be able to stay in touch with friends, particularly if you know that there will be a wifi hotspot there! But getting one through customs in cabin baggage is a bit of a nuisance, which is why I wouldn't take one abroad, as I would feel compelled to carry it around with me. You could send electronic postcards to your friends instead of cardboard ones, although I must admit there is something nice about a postcard plopping onto the doormat with good wishes from a friend. But it depends how big your laptop is... I have one of those Asus Netbooks that can fit inside my camera bag, or possibly even my coat pocket at a push... Mind you, my camera bag is quite big! lol!
@sblossom (2168)

good idea. you are the only one who mentioned electronic postcards. it's really a good idea. i'm not used to send card, but I found British people really like sending cards, not only when they are travelling, also for birthday etc, I also want to have a notebook. now I save my earnings on dooyoo website to redeem amazon voucher, then I can buy a notebook one day. however it's too expensive now. i searched on market and found they are most over £200. if one day it can be half price i would think seriously.
27 Nov 09
Yes, you are right, they do seem to be around the £200 mark, though an ASUS from Toys R Us is a little bit cheaper, at around £179 (though they are out of stock at the moment). I bought my ASUS from Toys R Us, would you believe - in fact I bought two of them a couple of years back and gave one to my step-daughter, who to my surprise has loved it so much (in spite of it being the original linux model) that her mum became frustrated that she used it so much, always on it when she gets home from work. I am surprised that the Netbooks are still so pricey, though their build standard has improved a lot compared to the ones I bought for £220 a piece in a moment of extravagance! Could have got one nice Windows laptop for that price! Or certainly could now. But the advantage of having one of them is that they are so small and light, and not nearly as nickable as a proper laptop.
@sblossom (2168)
27 Nov 09
I wonder who will not like the gift. I wish one day I can get one as free gift. You are right it’s still pricey so I save my amazon credit wish one day by May when I come back to china I can bring it with me to keep in touch with the world. By the way I just found you have a best reply given by a member on mylot. If you check If you check you profile ‘my best response’ you would find it. Congratulations. Today I feel happy because I found I can use twitter to twite my articles and it really works,

Hi sblossom, I always take my laptop on my vacations. Most of the time I use it to see what is going on in the local areas that we may never have been aware of prior to our trip. It is also good to get directions too. There have been times when I even brought a few movies with us just in case we wanted to watch a late night movie. There is one law I made, however, NEVER BRING IT FOR WORKING PURPOSES! You are on vacation and that means all lay and all fun, NO WORK! Hope you enjoy your stay in New York and have a great time.

You are the second friend here who thought I will go to New York. I live in the UK and I'm going to York as known as OLD York, which in the North part of England. I don't know much about the city, but my husband said it's a very important city in England.I checked on internet and found there are many historical sites to see. You are right. computer is very useful for finding informations when you are travelling. Now I try to get more information about York before I go, also my husband told me I can use the local library if I need internet. Here in the UK you can go to library to use their internet and computer one hour daily. It's very good. In fact now I'm sitting at my local library to reply your response. Thank you very much for your response and wish you have a good weekend.

because you have no laptop now so you think you will do these kind of things you listed when you are in holiday. however i think one day when you do have one laptop you would think differently. also if you want to do so many things why you go out for a holiday? I did not take my laptop, but I did miss my online life when i had the York trip. especially i wanted to keep my eye open on mylot and helium. now I try my best to work online and wish one day I can buy a notebook that I can bring anywhere. thanks for your reply and wish you good luck.

No I wouldn't because I'm on vacation and I want to enjoy each and every minute of it. I don't want the temptation of getting online because it will take up precious vacation time. I went on vacation for 17 days to Puerto Rico and didn't touch a computer for that length of time and I survived. I agree with your husband keep it home and have a wonderful vacation with your husband.

Time really flies even you don't have fun. it's already 2012. this post was published three years ago. Today I found one of mylotters answered the post. I have to come back to read again the replies I have got from my mylot friends. Last year I bought a small laptop, so I can take it with me when I have my domician republic trip. Now I think it's a good idea to take a laptop, however better to control the time you spend on internet.
20 Sep 09
Listen to him. You should just enjoy your holiday. If there is no temptation around, you will concentrate on your holiday. Besides, it's NYC, they must have lots of internet cafes over there should you really need to check on your email. If it were me, I probably won't take it and just enjoy the holiday.
@sblossom (2168)

I usually take my laptop with me when going abroad on holiday because that's the cheapest way to contact my friends that live over there, as opposed to using the cell phone for instance. Your husband does have a point however, one could always use a break. Since you're going with your other half, I'll go ahead and say leave it at home :)
@sblossom (2168)
26 Sep 09
You are right. Using internet to communicate family and friends when you are abroad is the cheapest way. In fact I live abroad. The UK is not my mother country. I use skype to talk with my parents. Some times PC to PC, sometimes I just call their telephone. It’s still very cheap. You are right. For my short trip I should leave my laptop home and really enjoy my holiday. I really need a break, my husband does too. To us it would be not a cheap trip. Thank you for your response and happy mylotting.

It is tempting for you to take your laptop to York. Do you have mobile broadband? You would have to carry your laptop there with you. You might worry that your laptop could be stolen. I prefer to leave my laptop at home when I go off traveling. I miss it though.

To maximize my vacation, I will leave my laptop. I can enjoy the new sorrounding and my husband more if I do that. Bringing my laptop will be a distraction for me, and my hubby, too. Forget the outside world for a while and enjoy your time with your husband. It will just be for 5 days, though.

Sometimes we do and other times we do not as it is great to have some time away from the computer! We run a business from home which has my wife and I online for a lot of time each day, so when we get some time to go away, we like to not go on computers if we can help it! If we just have a short trip we do not take it, but last Chistmas time we were away for a few weeks so we took our lap top just to check in on things from time to time. We have a large online forum that is attached to our business, so that still needs moderating every day or so at least! If we do not go online for a period of time, we do have to play catch up when we get back though, which can be daunting. When I got back from our trip at Christmas time, I had over 2500 emails waiting for me!!! Much of these just got deleted.

I think if I go out for one week my email box would be full too, and most of them are junk mails. The main reason I left my email address in some bad websites and they take advantages of me. It’s also very important for me to have a few days without computer. I have used computer too much recently, and I’m a little out of touch with real world. Today when I knew my friend lost her baby I was so shocked and sad. I told me I must cherish life and not waste my time on computer like I did before. Thank you for your response and happy mylotting.

hi sblossom.. enjoy your holiday and I think what your hub says is right.. you should leave your com at home, and enjoy these 5 days holiday and not having your com with you. I only had once carry my laptop with me during a holiday, and that's coz I was requested to do so, as we need to have the laptop to do a presentation for a friend's wedding. I find travelling with a laptop is very inconvenient beside boarding planes and so forth, every where you go for visiting, you need to carry it with you just in case. You can't leave the laptop in the hotel room as it's not a safe place there too. With the weight of a laptop, I would rather carry something else than the laptop for holiday.

I suppose if I read your response yesterday I will agree with you that my husband was right. But yesterday when he searched on internet about York he realized there are too much to see. Then he suggested me to take the laptop with us. We can check the places we want to visit. He sent two PDF to my emails and said we will read them when we are on holiday. I did not have any discussion about it with him. Now he will be responsible to my laptop. Also I can use the laptop to other websites, such as my blog and mylot if I do have time. From this I found my husband and I both are not good to make a decision. We made our life a little complicated. It’s good at least we don’t feel bored with our ordinary life. Thank you for your response and happy mylotting.

Hello I understand your husbands point, he wants you all to himself, maybe you should leave the laptop at home and devout all your time to him, this way when you get home you can spend as much time as you want online and not have to hear him in your ear lol 5 days is not long, enjoy your holiday with your hubby if he is asking you to do this, he obviously wants all your attention, why not let him have this, I am sure you will have a good time then come home and make up for lost time. Thank you. Enjoy your time with your hubby.

Hi sblossom! I love taking my laptop on vacations! Especially when I go away for more than two days :) I'm kind of addicted to the internet and being away from it for just a day is already too long for me, lol. Although I agree that one should also enjoy their days when on vacation but sometimes there are just times when you've got nothing to do or when in your hotel, the TV shows are kind of boring or you can't find a good book to read or just simply on the airport waiting for your plane -- that's where laptops and internet come in handy :) Also, it's a good way to chat with your friends/families on your hometown and ask them how they've been while you were away and all that stuff :)
@sblossom (2168)
26 Sep 09
You are not kind of addicted to computer, you are. Never mind, you are not alone. Many members of mylot as well as me are addicted to computer too. I told my husband I need to talk my parents when I'm holiday, he said in this case we take the laptop. However this morning I talked with my parents, they all said no need to take the laptop just for keeping connection with them. It's just for short five days. Now they knew where I'm going and how long, so they don't worry for me. It's enough. So I maybe not take the laptop. I suppose it needs a break too.

sorry for the late reply. I have been busy recently since I start to work. my life is getting harder to do any extra work on line. That all depends on how you use your laptop. If you are gonna still be doing some work on your holiday you might as well stay home. But that really is something you have to decide for yourself. It also depends on where you're going on the holidays. In my opinion it's really not a big deal you know. You can bring your laptop to the beach and only use it for a little while when you're bored. Then you can still have fun with other things all throughout the holidy. But if you're just gonna be using your laptop the whole time during the holiday. That would be a little funny. Cheers!

I don't use my laptop when I am on holiday, I prefer to leave it at home. When I am at home, I use my laptop every day and I spend a lot of time online, but I don't miss the computer while I am on holiday, because I have so many other things to do. When I am on holiday I love to explore the area where I spend my time, and I would rather walk around in the area than spend my time on the computer. There is one more reason why I don't like to take my laptop - I am worried than I might lose it or damage it.
@sblossom (2168)
23 Sep 09
I also worry if I will lose it or not. There is many personal information on my laptop. If I lost it I would feel very regret to take it on holiday. My husband already mentioned it. He said if you leave in hotel, it might be not safe. If you leave in my car, it might cause thief attention on my car. It might cause damage of my car. The cost will be more than the laptop itself. I agree with him. Also like you said I should spend more time on my holiday instead of playing computer. Thanks for your help and happy mylotting.

For me, it depends on the situation. If you've planned this holiday with your partner properly and want to take this chances to strengthen your relationship, then I suggest better not to bring along your laptop. But if you the type that couldn't live without laptop and internet, then you better bring it along.Huhu.Because it really comes in handy when you bring along your laptop while traveling because we never know what might happen and what had happened during our holiday.Thus, with the availability of the Internet this thing is a must for you to bring along.Although, you still can get any connection at your holiday's places right.There might have at least one internet cafe where you can surf and just bring your money along.And that if you're not into the Internet everyday.But if for me, I'll bring along if that place is a safe place to bring and no troubles when I bring it.Hope you can make your own decision.Enjoy your holiday~

26 Sep 09
According to my experience of travelling in the UK I think usually hotel is a safe place, but my husband told me it’s not very safe to put into the boot of his car. I can not stand to lose my laptop, not because of the value of the laptop itself. The main reason I have too much personal information in my laptop. My emails and my banks details all are on my laptop. If I do lose my laptop it would be a disaster for me. I already made decision for it. I will enjoy my holiday and forget the work on line. When I come back I can do more to catch up. Thank you for your response and happy mylotting.

Honesty, i support your husband. Firstly, the laptop is so heave that it's not convienet to take on. seconedly, when i come back to hotel to relax, i want to write the feeling about the travel instead of logging on internet. Lastly, in the travel, i want to forget everything, involve in the nature and enjoy my holiday to the fullest.

It's just what I want now. Before I did not realize it. Now I really feel too tired I need a break. Some unhappy things happened in my life and I felt too stressful. I think I need a place to forget reality and recover. if I cut my connection with outside world I will be happy to visit York. I have logged onto York website and found there are many interesting to visit. So I do many prepare works before I start the holiday, then I will not necessarily need a laptop. thanks for your advice and happy mylotting.

I think you must have important things to deal even when you are on holiday. my world is very small. my parents and my husband are all to me. My husband will go with me, so I have no connectiong problem with him. I called my parents this morning and they all suggested me leaving laptop at home. No need worry for them. by the way my emails mostly are for my works on line. if I read them, it's kind of work to me. now I feel fed up with these works I want to live without them for a couple of days. When I come back I will work tirelessly again on line to make money for living. best regards.
