That is so true! People just can't afford to buy healthy foods. It gets worse instead of better. We need to grow our own gardens and either can or freeze food so we have it year round. Kids are sick and unhealthy and fat because they either don't get healthy foods or parents are taking them to get fast food.

I think that it is quite affordable to eat healthy. It does require a little bit more work. I try to eat only fish and chicken. I buy both only when they are on sale and I buy a lot of each when I find a good price. I never buy boneless skinless chicjne, I buy whole chickens when they are on sale for under a $1 a lb. I roast the chicken and then I pull all of the meat off of the bones and throw away all of the skin and freeze the chicken for use as I need it. I buy beans, lentils etc in bulk and soak and cook them myself. Much cheaper than canned. In terms of produce, I buy and eat what is in season and generally buy my produce at our weekly farmers market. In the summer, I grow my own vegetable garden which really saves on food costs. The key really is to watch what particular times of the month that stores put particular items on sale (there is a pattern) and revamp your shopping patterns so that you never run out of healthy foods and have to pay full price. It sounds like a lot of work and it is in the beginning but once you have a system down it's really easy. Best of luck to you.

you hit the nail on the head with your post. It isn't that eating healthier is more expensive, it is that it requires a little more work, which many people don't want to have to do! convienence foods are the foods that tend to be cheaper, but also less healthy. Things that are in the "heat and eat" with little or no prep work tend to be much higher in fats and sodium......

Isn't that the truth?! You can't afford to eat healthy things. Alot of the reason that people are getting fat in this country is laziness and going to fast food and not being able to buy good, healthy food. It has always been expensive to eat well and is just getting worse. People need to grow gardens and can or freeze their food.

Hi Jugs.....I know what you are talking about. Groceries have increased in price so much that it doesn't take long to rack up $100 in a grocery store anymore. We live in the country, So having a big garden in the summer helps with canning and preserving food to last until the following summer. Being able to do this you know what has been put into the jar and are able to use things that are good for you. My husband is a hunter so we usually eat venison all winter and that is alot better for you than beef is. Although the inflation has hurt we still manage to have good healthy meals as often as we can. flutterby

fresh fruits and veggies are STILL some of the cheapest things you can purchase, as long as you go for what is in season, and on sale...with a little more work and extra planning, eating healthy can be even cheaper!

here in the Philippines, i noticed that it is a problem too. many poor people can't afford to buy fruits and vegetables but there are many other vegetables that are very cheap and healthy. the problem is that they value good taste over the health benefit of those foods. many poor people here would rather buy junk foods or other unhealthy street foods than the cheaper vegetables. no wonder most of the killers here in the philippines are diseases due to bad diet.

This is one of many pet peeves I have. They tell you to eat healthy but who can afford to each healthy now adays. The organic foods are so expensive it makes me so mad. They complain that so many people are out of shape and need to eat healthy. Wake up the normal person out there can't afford the prices of these healthy foods. It really upsets me because if you are poor or middle class ( if there is a middle class still) you can die from being obese. If you are rich you will be able to pay for the good food and live a long healthy life. What is wrong with this picture?

In my experience, eating healthy by making our own food is much less expensive than to go and weat junk at a fast food chain. Of course you have to work some, but after a while you discover how to cut work time and how to prepare more and freeze for further use.

I think it is affordable to eat healthy. Its just about little changes and most bad things for you cost just as much as the good things. A lot of times the veggies and fruits in my area I can find at a really cheap stand for farmers. So sometimes to me I think its cheaper. Next time your in the store just go around and check out all the stuff. Beans are one thing that is super healthy for you and are soooo cheap. Make some homemade chili mmm not only is it super good and healthy but its so filling. Good luck hun!
