What is your first greetings when you pick up an incoming call?

When I was working, I will pick the incoming call by
mentioning 'Good morning or..., my company name'
If I pick up the house phone at home..I will just say "Hello"
If I pick up my cell phone, I would say " Iriene speaking..."
How about you? Do share your style of answering a call.
Btw, you may share how you handle those 'spam' calls like
those who asked you to apply credit card, personal loans,
join privilege hotel membership, etc.

I guess we are all polite people. When we pick up a phone to answer it, we will always be civil to the party on the other end.Yes, I will convey the usual greetings like good morning, evening etc. Then I would ask how I could be of help. If they want a message passed to someone, I will accede. If they want someone to answer, I will redirect the call.As for SPAMS, I just replied I have joined them before or i have joined another hotel's campaign. That will put them off.

Dear gracefuldove,
I like the way you greet when answer your calls.
It is very polite and professional! Putting a smile while
answering can be felt by the other party online. They can
sense that you are very friendly too. Keep it up
At times when I received calls from the bank and insurance
companies who like to promote the medical insurance, credit card
insurance coverage, travelling insurance etc. I'll just politely
tell them that I am an insurance agent too! Then, they will said;
"Oh...I see..okay, thanks!"
Cheers, and do keep in touch!

Hello is definitely my top answer because it is just so common :) But sometimes I don't really answer with Hello most especially if I know well the person calling. Sometimes I would say "O bakit?" which is translated as "Yes, Why?," or even "Oyyy" for my closest friends. Whenever my mom calls I always answer with "O, ma?" or "Hmmmm?" I know it's just weird but what's more weird is that sometimes I don't speak until the caller speaks up first :))

Dear offlimits,
Welcome to myLot and glad to hear from you
Hahaha... sometimes you don't speak until the caller speaks up first?
Then, some might thought there is connection error.
It is very interesting to know how you greet in 'tagalog..?'
Some Chinese in Singapore, China and Hong Kong will greet as
'Wei..., Wai..'
However the most universal one is defnitely "Hello"
Cheers, hope to hear your views on my other topics too!

Dear offlimits,
I am honored to be your first friend...
Btw, who is your introducer..or I would say who is the
one introduced you to myLot? Normally the first friend
is the introducer, this case is really special..wow...
Just some tips for you, I noticed you are at the right track :-
1) Every response that you post, you will be paid. BUT bear in mind,
make sure at least minimum 3 or 4 relevant sentences regarding the topic
in discussion. A few cents per post..so the more you post, the merrier!
2) If you start a topic, then it is advisable that you comments on
the responses that you receive in order to earn. Again, minimum
3 or 4 relevant sentences! If you include a photo in your discussion,
it earns too! myLot pay on your comments! for the responses
you received...
3) You can get referral to join under you. You will be paid 25% of
their earnings on postings here. So get more referral and it boost
your earnings.
4)I think (not so sure), the higher rating and with more quality
response, the earnings is higher! Just try and see for yourself.
If this strategy is true, let me know too:)
5) Task was good, can earn extra too.
But I am not fully into it yet.
Cheers and take care :)

Thanks a lot! I am having a great time participating in the discussions. You are actually my first friend here. Haha :)
Yes, maybe. Sometimes the caller would repeatedly say Hello before I respond with anything. LOL. And I am glad you know about tagalog. I also love Japanese so sometimes I say Konnichiwa. haha.
I would definitely respond to your other topics. I find them interesting :)
Take care.

I am honored to have my numbers stored in your cellphone
I too at times, greet my friends by their name
just like this :)
"Hi meapas, what's up?" or
"Grace...how's thing? Long time no see..lol"
I agree with you, being casual with friends are
more fun and it shows we are very close to each
other.
However, we should be polite whenever answering any
incoming calls because it is the first impression we
gave to the other party who listen to our voice. It
will be good if we can smile when talking to the other
party on the other end. I believe they can feel it and
they can perceive our friendliness too :)
Cheers and great to hear your response

I don't have to answer company phone. However,if the receptionist passes the call to me she usually identifies the caller to me, then I will call the caller by name follow by good morning or good afternoon whatever the time may be.If it is house phone, I say 'Hello.' If somebody who calls on my hand phone, I say the caller's name,(as the regular callers are identified on my phone screen) follow by the usual greetings. As for callers who try to sell membership or insurance I normally entertain them and later turn down politely.

Dear James,
Yes, it is good that you are notified earlier
by your receptionist who the caller is. It
makes greetings and conversation easier.
However it is advisable that you do not entertain
'spam' calls while you are driving. You might lost
some focus there. I think it will be good if you can
tell tehm that you are currently driving and you are
not interested on the offer.

Hello Iriene, I'll take your advice while driving. It is dangerous using hand phone while

Hi Iriene,
Just like you i simply tell the 'hello' while attending the unknown call in the mobile.
In Landline numbers when i picked up, i say 'hello who's this? who do you want?' because i receive more wrong calls in my landline as my number resembles the near by gas agency..
When i receive my friends call in the mobile, i simply say 'tell da .....(name)'
I didn't receive any spam calls till now because i activated the Do Not Discturb service.
Have a great day.

When I worked it was, "Company name, Sandy speaking, may I help you". On my cell phone it is just "Hello" and at home it varies depending on who is calling and if I catch who is calling on my caller ID first. If I can see that it is a telemarketer, I answer with "I am not interested thank you" and I hang up. If it is a friend or family member, I answer by saying "hey" or "what's up" and sometimes I will add their name or the nickname that I have for certain ones.

It is a mouthful to get out too. Wish I could take the credit for answering the work phone in a professional, polite way as you say but I didn't come up with it. That is the way the company wanted all of its employees to answer the phone. It is a good way though I think. Thanks for commenting and happy mylotting.

The other day in an office this lady answered the phone and literally yelled "YES" in to the mouthpiece. I was startled and terrified. I just wondered what the person at the other end felt. But later I realized that that was her manner of speaking. She is just loud naturally. May be if she had said "hello" it would have been less terrifying.

Hi, Iriene88. I usually will say, "Hello". Now for the annoying calls, if I most likely know that it is the telemarketers calling, I will just change my voice up to sound really strange. Or I may pretend that they are speaking to a company of some sort. I have been known to deliberately just yell or scream very loudly when I first pick up the phone.

Dear Cream97,
I totally agree with you that at times this telemarketing
are so persistent that we have to seek this type of response
to stop them from keep calling us back. However, I realised
there is a better way of response to just cut them off by
telling them these :-
(1) I am an insurance agent too (if they called on behalf of Insurance
company or bank to introduce some insurance.)
(2) I am a housewife who can't pay any loan back (if calls to offer
personal loan from bank)
Hahaha, sometimes it works.

I would just simply say "Hello". Some of my friends will answer their calls with "Wei?" which also mean "Hello" in Cantonese.
For those "spam" calls, sometimes I will just turn the phone off, if I have spare time, I will pretend to be interesting in them, and when they ask about my info, I just answer nonsense. XD

Hi Iriene, just seen this sitting in the bottom of my mail box my dear. So spam calls are really easy for me to deal with, I simply pretend I can't speak Greek and that soon gets rid of them. I never used to get any but they are suddenly on the increase and not to be encouraged.
Luckily when I pick up the house phone or mobile it will have the name of the caller programmed in which I need as before I had that with the house phone I would get terribly confused when a Greek person called as they don't identify themselves but launch straight into their greetings while I'm trying to make out who it is. So anyway problem solved. So if it's a Greek friend I'll answer with yassou of Kalimera and then name and greeting. If it's an English person I'll just say 'Hi and name'.
There are many ways for a Greek person to answer their phone when they don't know who is calling and some of the ways have no relation at all to the word hello. WE have 'please', 'come here' 'yes' 'certainly' 'here it is' and many more. That's kind of how they translate anyway but a pretty strange way of answering the phone. If I get an unknow call I just bark out 'yes' in Greek.

Dear Thea,
So if it's a Greek friend you will answer with
yassou of Kalimera and then name and greeting.
If it's an English person you'll just say 'Hi and name'.
Quite similar and "Hello" is the most universal one
used as greeting when one answer the incoming call.
Hello, Alo, Wei, Wai, Hi., and 'yassou of Kalimera'!
In Chinese, many will answer their incoming call like this:-
'Wei, ni chau shui?' (means: Hi, who are are looking for?)
Just like to relate another scenario, there are many door
to door marketer who like to ring the door bell and sell
all kinds of items from gas cylinder head, vacuum cleaner,
swipe & win (scam) etc. So, the only way we do not want to
attend tot his sort of 'inconvenience', we too will just
pretend we are the maids, do not understand local language
or dialects and tell them that the 'boss' or owner not around.
Then they will just go off, if not they will stand there for a
long time until we entertain them! If 'boss' not around, then
no want can make decision to buy..

and if its my mum's office phone I'll pick up and say "hello, who do you want to speak to?" because sometimes people will call finding for any1 of us as we are normally in my mum's office and not at home.
If its this 'spam' callers I'll just say politely, sorry I'm not interested or I've already got a call like this, because I've worked in a survey company and i know how bad it feel's when others be rude.

At work its "IT services, Lee speaking...", on the mobile phone, if I know the person I just answer casually, but if I do not know the number then I will normally say "Lee speaking". Home phone is same. Spam calls I hate, but on my phone the number of the caller shows on the screen so if I notice is one of those call center numbers I simply wont answer, but if I do answer I will just fool around with them a little bit, like continuously asking them to repeat what they say etc. Or I just tell them im not interested and not to call again, please remove me from your list of numbers. But they never do, they always call back some other time!

Iriene, when you mentioned about this, I remembered during my employment with a company, we were being sent to a course and in the course, we are being taught how to answer phone calls!
We are to have a very long winded opening statement
"Good monrning / afternoon / evening, and thank you for calling XXX Company, and this is XXX. How can I help you please"

We all got really freak out when we are asked to do this.. however after many discussions, finally the head of department decided that this is only the opening line for those who has called the general lines of the Company, and it's been answered by the receptionist or operator.
For those who had a direct line and extension line, we are to answer it this way..
"Good monrning / afternoon / evening, this is XXX speaking. How can I help you please"
Sometimes even myself can't stand those long winded greetings, and when we are made compulsory to do this, we are really lost of words..

Hi Iriene, you had a great responses there...Keep up your good work.
When I was working, I answered the calls this way "Good Morning..." and followed by my company name. I think it is quite a standard practice in most of the companies. I also have came across some other way of answering phone call, "Good Morning...XXX Company, how can I help you?". Actually I like this way better, but I guess it is too long and some of the caller even can't wait to start their conversation even before they finished their greetings.
For my house phone or mobile phone, I will just say "Hello". When I was a kid, I said "Wei". And now my girl also learning the same greeting as me "Heloo", LOL.
Normally I will let the "spam" caller finished their earlier intention of calling me, then I would just tell them I am not interested.

I like this discussion.
For me, I don't use any house phone. I use only my cell phone. With cell phone, normally we can get to see the incoming calls are made by your friends and your family because we mostly had save their numbers in the cell phone.
If I see my family members calling me, I will answer the call directly without any hello or hi. I will just say ' what up' or 'yes sister' or 'yes mother'.
Now my three years old daughter likes to pick up my cell phone and so do my hub one. She is cute and when she picks up the call, she will just say ' Hello, I am Girl Girl...'
When ever my mom pick up her house phone, she will just say ' Meh Shi' ( anything) .
