hey my fellow myloters. i am just wandering if the school district my child attends is the only that has issued laptop to every student. this is the first time i have ever heard of this but they are trying to not only make the children more responsible and ready for their future professions, but this is to also aide in less papaerwork and textbooks. by the end of this school term all textbooks will be on their laptops. As for now their curriculum, homework and study notes are on their laptop. get this, their computers also have trackers so the district knows where they are at all times. They have informed the students if they try to download things not pertaining to school or their curriculum, they have the capability to interrupt it at that moment. I think this is great. wow school certainly has come along way since i was in school.

I believe our entire public school system will be on computer in the near future. It would cost a lot less to give every student a computer than to supply their school need as was are going today. I'm not sure about it but from what I have seen with my grand kids they would learn a lot quicker and a lot better on the computer. I'm also not sure but it just could have some very positive effects on our kids. For one thing they wouldn't be exposed to so many other kids that will lead them off in the wrong direction. A kid will also learn quicker on a computer than they will with a live teacher. My computer has helped my little 8 year old great grand daughter that lives with me to build her reading skills way beyond what she could have without it. Kids are simply more interested in computers than they are in public school. Art

The one thing that is missing however, is the social interaction that they do not get with home schooling. That issue is still being debated.

I'm not sure that a lot less "Social Interaction" wouldn't be a good thing in the lives of our kids. The kids pick up a lot of things from other kids that isn't always the best thing for them. You can have a real good kid and when they start public school they start to change and acting like the other kids they are around. This can be good but most times it isn't. Art

Fantastic! Now that's putting school dollars to good use and taking advantage of technology. Are all grades getting computers? I assume they get modems, email etc. to go along with it? Does it cost you anything? Internet connect fees? My grandson's elementary school is asking parents to please bring pencils and erasers to school. They have a couple of computers in the classroom and the kids take turns using them.

A lot more people could home school their kids on computers a lot cheaper than sending them to public school. It costs the parents and the state school system a lot of money to educate a kid from K thru 12. Art

So true. Even with the low teachers salaries.

My school was supposed to issue free laptops to all of its 6th formers this year but after more people joined than they was expecting (many came back hating the huge local college which sounds like it's doing an awful job keeping it's students happy) they've decided that everyone will now have to pay for them and give them back after 2 years (they were considering letting us buy them off them after 2 years for a small price as by then there would probably be better, updated versions anyway). I don't think they have any of the tracker software. We were promised them at the start of the school year but 2 weeks in we've still not got them or our discount cards, but of course the local college doesn't sound much better! :(

When I was in high school, even handphones are prohibited in my schools, so laptops are definitely not allowed. When I go to college, it is a must to have a laptop as our college use nearly 80% internet to conduct classes and transfer homework. Of course it does save us a lot of problem. We only have to do project on laptop instead of writing. Any announcements by the college also can be received via email. Its great when technologies meet up with education :)

I think it's absolutely necessary that children in school today learn basic computer skills. However, I am confused as to how they can track them wherever they are. A computer is tracked by it's IP address. A computer gets assigned a new IP address everytime it is re-booted and then logs back onto a network. Unless the school is also providing them broadband mobile network connectivity for free along with their laptop then the only way they could track that computer would be with the MAC address and my experience is that the computer staff that the schools employ are not that savy. I doubt what they are saying in that regard is true.

I think this is a great idea! However, there is a drawback. What happens when the kids need glasses from staring at these computers ALL day? If thier homework, textbooks, and everything is on there, that's going to be a big eye strainer. I'm currently enrolled in a college and some professors let you use laptops in thier rooms, and I wish they wouldn't cause it's very distracting if someone is typing and you're trying to listen to what the professor is saying. So what about classroom interruptions? I guess there's a drawback to just about everything.

Well, my daughter is still in elementary school and they have two computers in their classroom as well as a computer lab at their school. However, I am not sure how things work in the high school level. I think this is an awesome idea and I hope it is something that will be taken up by more schools throughout the country. Now, I can't say that I agree with the textbooks and things being on the computer because I for one find it difficult to do a lot of reading off of the computer because it fatigues my eyes, but I do like the idea of having a computer to do homework on and the likes of that. I think that the school that your child attends certainly deserves a thumbs up for an idea that is so current and with the times.
