Depends on what is your purpose of the notebook computer, if just for basically typing papers etc, a normal computer with 256 MB of RAM, and about 30 GB of space should do it. If you are using for a lot of programs or storage, then try to get one have a minimum of 518 MB of RAM , and 2 GHz minimum and about 80GB of space. Depends on what you going to use it for, the specifications will vary. I would recommend compaq and gateway since I have both type of computer and they are working great.

what is the GHz for actually? thanks. my uncle has a gateway notebook but what really turned me off is the screen brightness and i couldnt find a way to adjust it. the screen was too bright and the resolution's really off... but i heard gateway is an okay brand.

I would recommen TOSHIBA or Sony Viao. Acer they are also good but their battery life sucks. HP never tried but TOSHIBA it's life is very long. You can use it till after 10 years unlike other notebooks. I have one PI 233 MHZ with 2 gb and 32mb ram and still works with windows XP.

Compaq is a good brand. It much depends on your budget. If you have no limitations then sony vio is one of the best. What work do you intend to do on the Laptop? Its ordinary stuff then a celeron would be sufficient, but a pentium would be better for higher end applications.

I've got an old Dell Inspiron 8000. I loved it and didn't have any problems with it. It's about 6 years old now and it's still goin'. --- --- --- "I certainly think Britney Spears is the devil. The way she projects herself and the fact that she is so obviously vacuous. I think it's such a shame that she became so influential to very small children." -- MORRISSEY --- --- ---

Haha.. That's the brand our mentor's short, dark guy-friend is buying, and he says its good. He's getting it from the local mall for 52k. I would recommend mac for you to use. I can find you a supplier if you want. =)
