REALLY!! I have never ever hear that one before. I'm from Canada, and I have never heard of anyone in our relatives in China or Hong Kong who have said anything about it. My parents are from China and they think it's gross too!

Well marrying to some far away cousin does not create genetic disroders. I am a muslim and this practice is very very rare as far as I know. ya but in some orthodox families it sill happens....

That's good that it's still rare. My friend made it sound like it's still common,

Well, in South India it is quite common and people seem none the worse for it. I personally wouldn't like it. But sometimes the best of both sets of genes comes out and you end up having really brainy kids.

In the USA marrying a first cousin is illegal in most if not all states. However, marrying a 2d or 3d cousin is legal in most if not all states. In the hillbillie regions of the USA the marrying of cousins at one time was common enough that people use to joke quite a bit about it. Want an example? If two hillbillies get divorced, are they still cousins? Anyway, I always thought only really stupid people married their cousins. Then I found out (true story!) Albert Einstein's 2d wife was his first cousin! It is a strange world.

Beverly Hillbillies - Bevery Hillbillies
Interesting facts! Thanks for sharing with us. And yes, it is a strange world. Now I know why in the cartoon, the Simpsons, the hillbillies are married to each and are cousins LOL!

I think it's unhealthy for the children. Inbreeding produces too many genetic defects.

I agree with you i think it is gross, i doesnt make sense there are so many people out there in the big wide world why choose someone your are related to?? and then go and have babies and give them being born with problems is just wrong! but i spose if someone is that desperate that they have to marry a cousin then thats there own choice but it is still wrong and sick!

It's been going on for hundreds of years...in some cultures I don't think they consider it a wrong thing...just have no desire to marry any of my cousins..to each his own.

Yes, I heard it was done a long time ago in the past, because they wanted to keep their blood within the family. I didn't know people still practiced this until my friend told me.

In the UK it's not against the law to marry a first cousin and most people would not find it wrong at all. It's a matter of culture, nothing more. Genetically, first cousins share only one set of grandparents and, unless they are children of identical twins, the genetic identity is less than half the same. It is very, very unlikely that children from such a marriage will be abnormal in any way. If fact it is just as likely that such a marriage would enhance a desirable trait as it is that it would bring out an undesirable trait! Think of pedigree animals - cows, sheep, pigs, horses, dogs - they are far more 'inbred' than many human families which may have a century or so of that level of inbreeding because they have lived in the same isolated community. If two people fall in love and want to raise a family, it is far, far better than the child abuse and inter-family rape which is often hushed up and covered over! Yes, of course they should be much more meticulous about checks for possible genetic problems but, apart from that, there is no harm in it.
