Whenever I have a sore throat, I feel irritating! I could not eat and sleep well! Just feel discomfort!
For me, sore throat can be painful and irritating, but you might be surprised to know that simple things in your cupboard can help ease the pain, no matter what the cause.
Before you look for the remedies, Sore throats can be caused by lots of things. Anything that irritates the sensitive membranes at the back of our throats and mouths: dust, smoke, hot foods, tooth and gum infections, even loud talking or excessive coughing can irritate a throat.
I normally get sore throat after I eat hot food and fried food. How about you? Do you think sore throat is irritating? Why and how you get sore throat? Any home remedies for a sore throat?

Hello Kitty,
Thanks for dropping by my discussion. I think you have change your avatar?
Yeah, if I have a bad sore throat, i just have tough time to swallow. I also get no appetite to eat .
My mum used to tell me to drink a glass of warm salt water, but not gargle with salt water.

Hello Mohitseth,
Thanks for your response. If the sore throat is getting worst, I will consult doctor. It is better to do so because doctor can give the right medication for us.
I prefer to drink warm water rather than take cold water if I have a sore throat. Warm water some how can release a little discomfort.

I think warm water is much better. Cold water just make it worse, I think.

Yes, zinc is good for that. Some of the zinc lozenges they sell taste good and others are awful tasting. If find that if they say it tastes "good" it is awful, but if they say it is delicious, then those are at least not nasty. But when one's throat is sore one cannot usually taste as well either, so then none of them taste as bad. The zinc will really help though. Since moving to a hot dry climate I don't ever get that any more, whereas in the cold damp San Francisco Bay Area we always kept the zinc lozenges handy.

that's so hard, that means you're having a hard time speaking when you had a sore throat problem. we have medication here like strepsils or lemon that is added to the water and pour hot water then drink, with out sugar. don't drink any kind of cold water, otherwise, it'll make it worse.

Hello LetranKnight,
Thanks for your response. If I get the mild sore throat, I don't have problem to talk at all. But if the sore throat is getting worst, then I find myself having hard time to talk and even drink water.
Yeah, I will take warm water when I have sore throat. But I think Strepsils that I have here is a kind of sweet but not to put in the water.

hi ving... ugh i know how it s*cks to have sore throat...
but if you have that very often...
I suggest you go and see a doctor...
a doctor told me once that frequent strep infections (strep throat ) might be an indication of some heart problems since streptococcus may cause certain heart conditions too...

Hello Patofgold,
Thanks for your response here. For me, of course I am not getting sore throat very often. Maybe once in a month, just a mild one, ! But if I am down with cough or flu, the sore throat sure will come together, then that will be the though time for me, this is not happen often too. I think this happen could be the virul infection?
After reading your response here, it makes me worry about one of my friend. She gets sore throat very often and mouth ulcer too. Maybe I will pass your message here about sore throat related some heart problem to my dear friend!
So you get any home remedies about sore throat to share here? What will you do when you have a sore throat? Self healing or eat medicine?
Thanks again and happy Mylotting!

hi vingyan^^;;
i usually experience tonsillitis which is more painful that sore throat. I get it with the same reasons you mentioned specially to smoke. Another one is when i eat too much sweets and consume cold drinks through out the day. and yes, it's really irritating and painful and i'm having difficulty to swallow sometimes when my throat dries up..so i always drink plain warm water or some lemon squeezed on it.
one good way to relieve a sore throat and tonsillitis is to gargle warm water with a teaspoon of salt to every glass or cup of water.
i also drink ginger tea or eat a tablespoon of honey. honey is good for curing inflamed throat and for cough too. with the ginger, one of my friend peel a fresh small piece of ginger and eat like a candy with that piece of ginger in her mouth for an hour hekhek. oh i tried it and it's more effective but the taste? yiiks! ^^;;

i do suffer with sore throats and an extremely irritating dry cough. i can cough so much, i start to heave. i gave up smoking many years ago, but suffer with hay fever and also dust allergies. i use a spray which does help sometimes, but i also chew a gum called 'air waves'. its very strong ,tasting of eucalyptus and menthol. but it soothes my throat and help stop the cough.

I have a sensitive throat too which gets sore when exposed to dust and smoke. I have a running nose when I get a sore throat and sneeze a number of times.
But washing my throat with salt water is an excellent remedy to keep away this allergy. Do it 2 or 3 times in a day. Once before you go to bed. It also helps in keeping your mouth and dental set up clean.
One has to avoid ice creams, chlled water, curds, oily food, milk etc. before bed.

Hi, VingYan! I think I never have a sore throat because of some food, but I can get it easily if I do not drink plenty of water especially when the weather is very hot! Of course, it is very irritating because of the pain when we are trying to swallow some food and especially when you also have caught the flu or fever bugs. Drinking some lime juice can help to ease the pain or just drink plenty of water to get rid of sore throat.

Yes, it is irritating, but for me, usually I get one after getting some germs from people I'm close to. I am "lucky". I say that because I have a medical condition where my immune system is so overactive, I hardly ever get "bugs" that are going around. (I said "lucky" because what causes me to have a super immune system is by me having Multiple Sclerosis/MS, which is no walk in the park!)
I've never heard of anyone getting a sore throat after eating certain things, other than spicy food (like Mexican), using spicy peppers.
My mother's "cure" for a sore throat was what she called "a hot toddy". Take some warm tea, add some lemon (to cut the congestion), and add some wiskey (just a teaspoon), then lay down for a nap. Using this, when I wake up, my sore throat is almost always gone!

I think no one will enjoy discomfort with our body.. and having throat irritation can be something that lead to serious sickness if it's not taken care of.
I had once had a throat infection which when I consult that doctor, it seems it was due to the lozenges that we used to eat and asked me to stop eating if I feel my irritation. The doctor advise I could always use the salt water to bring down the discomfort, and also drink plenty of water to keep it moist.
Doctor has said the throat infection was due to my work, since I need to talk a lot at that time, and also too much of coffee (I was working in a cafe) and therefore, I am very prone in getting this. I always have some medicated lozenges which was prescribe by the doctor, but not for those we get from the shelves.
When I got back to KL, I am also into yoga practise, and we learn how to clear our throat every day with salt water, and I find this a very useful way since. Whenever I feel the throat irritates me, I will use this method to clear it.. So far, I don't even need the medicated lozenges!

hi vingyan my doctor always tells me to gargle with hot salt water and do this often, not too hot just warm enough so it doesnt burn. also gargling with soda water can help too. and drinking ice cold water stops the pain with a strept throat if it gets really bad with fever you must see your doctor as only antibiotics will stop a strep throat and it will make you really ill.

hi!here in our country the best thing we do to relieve from sore throat is to gurgle with warm water with salt.well you can try this but be sure that the water is warm not hot.Or you can also drink hot salabat..a glass of hot water and place about a small piece of slice ginger inside the glass and drink it while its hot. This won't harm you since its a natural way of curing a soar throat.
