SMS is ruining my spelling!

I admit, I used to be a spelling and grammar freak. But with new technology, when everything seems to be in "shortcut" mode, I can't help but go with the flow. With the dawn of cellphones, SMS (aka texting)has become one major mode of communication. I must confess, I am caught up in this hype. Who wouldn't be? Alarmingly, I am slowly starting to forget the spelling of many words that I didn't have a hard time spelling back when I was still in 4th year high school (5 years ago). I also find myself at a loss to what the proper punctuation should be. My grammar can sometimes be surprising too! How about you? Do you have other sentiments about this? Or have you experienced what I have experienced? Thanks in advance to those who'll be replying! :)

That does happen to a lot of people. I do admit that there are those moments that I mightve already forgotten the exact spelling of a word but that's because of infrequent use. I do text a lot since that is my primary form of communication with most people but I text using our local dialect. With short cuts in local words, it doesnt have that much effect on the spelling because these are words that I use often. That way I might not forget the correct spelling of each. When I do text in English, and I am in the mood to type. Ill type the words in full spelling and punctuation. That is also of course when I have availed of the unlimited promos. Though there are definitely those times that I did make some errors with the word "good". I have typed or written it spelled as "gud".

I agree with elen. Try to tone down the txtspeak. You can also practice using full words in texting. It can be tedious but at least you'd develop the habit of being formal again.

aixsha, I think that's probably a sign that you should stop typing in "chatspeak" so much. I mean, I'm one of those people who lapses into chatspeak while talking for humor's sake, but I have NEVER spelled something in sms-spelling while typing up important documents and all that. I mean, I don't think there's anything wrong with using chatspeak, as long as it doesn't interfere with important real-life situations.

It really gets frustrating at times, especially when you can't afford to botch things up. I just graduated, so I'm off looking for work, so the resume seems to be a bother at times. I find myself at a loss for words at times, while typing my application letter. Hahaha! I found myself typing "gud day" and "sncrely urs". Right on!

I have never been a good speller Or a good typer to begin with so I was alrady ruined long before the advent of the cell tech age. I think what irks me more though is actually HEARING KIDS SPEAK in sms short cuts durring every day verbal conversations....I get a twitch every time I hear it.

Kids nowadays can be so hooked on "text speak" (as my friends call it). It just shows how the media can be a major factor in shaping the younger generation. One conversation that I remember overhearing from a group of friends outside the church: Girl 1: OMG, I saw him driving his new car!! Girl 2: Lolz, you're like eeew! Girl 3: And duh, he's like 10 years older than you!! Girl 1: FYI, he's serious about me. Not like blah blah blah I couldn't get the rest as I went away from the spot where I was in. I couldn't stand how they talked. I couldn't remember myself talking that way back when I was their age.

Ahahahah, that's me. But I don't use it in everyday conversation...only in select conversations where I think using it would make the situation funnier/more ridiculous. For example, if there was a situation in which I wanted to be seriously over the top, I would break out the chatspeak and the *cough* Valley Girl accent. As in, I only pair chatspeak with a Valley Girl accent so people know that I'm not being serious. In my defence...my spelling and grammar is actually pretty good. So...yeah. *shifty eyes*

Haha! Good thing I'm not into SMS... I have lot's of friends who had this "SMS-Spelling-Syndrome", I told them try using complete sentences and spelling out words properly when sending SMS, it worked for them, then it would work for you too! Happy myLotting!

it's a trend going on for years now. people who use cell phones and use the internet too are bound to use that simplified writing on forums and whatnot. now, i'll admit that my typing is very lazy, lacking capitals, some misspelled words, etcetera, but when willing i can type just properly. i do try to keep my spelling intact in other places though, not allowing myself to cling to those shortcut words and whatnot because before you know it, you're saying "lol" instead of actually laughing amongst other things.

I say "lol" when something is funny but not so funny that it merits a full out laugh...or when I'm being sarcastic. Yeahh, this is in real life as well. I also happen to use the abbreviations when I'm around friends because *I* happen to think it's funny (even if no one else does). :P "Like, BRB!"
