What's the difference between Lover and Girl Friend??

I dont think there is a difference although some people see it differently! Some people see a lover as an affair for example if a man says to somebody my lover as opposed to my girlfriend they may think he is cheating on his girlfriend when he meant his girlfriend but said lover, make sense its hard to explain!
