I grew up calling sodapop pop,but it seems liek most of the world calls it soda. To me a soda is something with ice cream, but I have kind of gotten in the habit of calling it soda since that seems how most people in these parts refer to it. What do you think it should be called what do you call it? I have also heard soda being called frappe or any flavor of it called coke. ie an orange coke

This is so funny, Snowy! This past weekend I had a cousin staying over from back home, I am from Connecticut. She was originally from Massachusettes. We were talking about a time when me and my sisters and brothers were at their house for a vacation. I was around 12 years old and was proud that my Mom would allow me to walk to the local store by myself. I was on my way to do so when my Aunt asked me to buy a bottle of tonic. No problem. I bought some "penny candy" for me and the others and a bottle of tonic water for my Aunt and walked back to the house. Boy! was my Aunt made at me. She did not want tonic water she wanted a bottle of "tonic" which in Massachusettes is cola or soda. At the soda shoppes back then your soda could have gotten flavored or it had ice cream in it. If you asked for a soda, it usually meant a cola float. You could also get your cola flavored too such as the orange cola you mentioned. I am from Ct. and soda is soda and tonic is tonic water which is usually used as a mixer. Now I live in Pennsylvania where 1/2 the people call it soda and the other half call it pop. I have always found it comical on how different states have different words for the same thing. Example, grinders in Ct are called hoagies here and subs in Massechusettes. Either way, either name they all taste great.

I am not too sure but I think I remember a frappe being made with soda water, flavoring and ice cream, whip cream and a cherry on top. I was discussing this with one of my older sisters and they remember going to the "soda shoppe" in town and sitting at the counter drinking one. You could also get magazines, a few types of groceries and pharmacy items not to mention all the penny candy you would ever need. I want to thank you for the best response, but even more I want to thank you for making me call my sister and having a great conversation down memory lane!

Yeah, it is funny. I usually still call it soda, but the guy I am renting a room to is from Western Pennsylvania too I bet he calls it pop. I am going to ask him when he comes out of his room. It is a matter of debate with alot of people I think. What to call it? Who really knows?

I used to argue with people about this in college. To me it is and will always be known as POP. To this day every time I say pop someone looks at me funny.

Yeah, it is all in what you get used to I guess. I think there are some people who like this sort of thing and will get to drink soda or pop and debate what it is called. I just think there are different peple you like to socialized with that will call it different things.

Since I'm an avid Pepsi drinker I just say Pepsi but my daughter calls everything soda no matter what it is. I know a lot of people who say call all carbonated drinks coke no matter what they are too.

I call soft drinks sodas or cokes. I've heard the gamut of names. I think the names really depend on where you live. Some places use pop, soda or coke. Frappe is more an Italian term and I think is still specific to the Italian drink. But, you're right, a cream soda has ice cream in it. How the term has changed over time is interesting and can be frustrating. I guess good old soft drinks still works if you want to make sure people understand. Where have all the soda jerks gone?
