Responsible pet owner or not?

Today's Dear Abby contained a letter from a dog owner who picked up his dog's droppings, placed them in a plastic bag, sealed the bag and then deposited the bag in somebody else's trash can.
Acceptable? Or should he have gone all the way home and put it in his own trash can?

I don't see any issue with this really? I suppose it could come down to how far away the next trash pick-up was though. If it was a week away, then maybe putting it in his own trash can would be more appropriate" If the trash can was full to overflowing and he then threw it in there, then this could make a difference as well. All I know is that if I saw someone doing this and putting the bagged droppings in my own trash can, I couldn't care less. This is much better than them throwing the bag into the bushes or not picking up the droppings at all! I might get a bit funny if they threw their dog in there.

lol its a trash can and trash goes in it.. if you had a dog and where out on a walk with your dog and your kid say.. Would you want to carry around a bag of stinky poop with you ? or if you where on your way to school to pick up your kid and a dog pooped on your lawn, would you rather the owner leave it there because he doesnt' want to carry poop to the school to pick up his kid ? or put it in your trash ? lol i dont get the idea of why its unreasonable to use someone elses curbside garbage..

oh..i'm going off on this one,dawnald..
i saw that one.
it's your dog, take your poop home!!!
i get so sick of washing out my cans from people leaving me gifts in them.
first of all,if it's outside a garbage bag,my garbage men won't take the whole garbage.sitting on top of it doesn't work.
second-july-more than 1 a week..90 degree temps..you get the picture.
i don't have a dog,i sure don't want to deal with poop from a dog i don't own.

We're talking about it being securely wrapped in a baggie so you wouldn't have to wash your can out... But I don't see why they couldn't come with something else to carry the baggie home in.

Oh my goodness, who cares where it goes as long as it's picked up and disposed of! Would be pretty crappy..oops, no pun intended, haha..if someone stepped in it and brought it into the house, ack!
And what pray tell, did Dear Abby say about all this?

did the letter/answer in the column give a reason why it might NOT be acceptable.. i'm VERY curious now.

The link to the column is under response #11. Abby was fine with what he had done. It was the man's wife and co-workers who were saying it wasn't right.

He picked up the mess and put it in a bin. It would have been terrible if he had left the dog mess on the ground. The rubbish bin will be emptied by rubbish collectors. The owner of the rubbish bin might not have liked the man's actions. I think it is 50% acceptable.
In my home country there are rubbish bins and dog mess bins.

Wouldn't bother me since it was wrapped. But then we put cat droppings (in a bag) in ours...

As long as the poop was placed in a plastic bag and sealed who cares? LOL. I wish MORE people would pick up their dog's droppings near me...many don't and since their are a lot of dog owners on my block it can sometimes be an obstacle course avoiding poo on the streets...oh and of course, on hot summer days it smells lovely.....NOT

I wouldn't want that put in my trash can. I don't know why people have to bring their dogs to poop in your neighborhood anyway. Why can't they poop in their own yard.

I guess some people don't have yards, which is why they take baggies and pick it up. In my case, there is cat poop going in there anyway, so I don't mind a little bagged up dog poop to go with it.

Hi dawnald,
That is just too disgusting, surely there is a bin for dogs do da around, or yes he should have taken it home to put in his own trash can, the dirty so and so.

I would much rather have it in my garbage can than on my lawn. At least he badded it and tied it up.

Personally, I would prefer he did that then leave it on the sidewalk or my grass! In France, dog owners rarely pick up after their pets and there have been many poster campaigns encouraging dog owners to train their dogs to use the gutters rather than the sidewalks.

When I lived in Germany it was a huge problem. When I went back it wasn't. They must have changed the laws.

hi dawnald why not as its sure a lot better than if he did like some'people used to do on the street where I used to live. this
idiot would go to the trouble of doing right and picking up
his dog's droppings in a plastic bag, sealing it but then'he wouild
just toss it on the lawn of the complex where i used to live.the poor little mexican man who did the gardening then had to go around and pick up that dog poop and put it in the garbage. that little guy worked so hard and was not paid enough to have to do that too. better he put it in anyone;s garbage can than to dump it on someone elses lawn. anyway whats the diff,if there are other smelly things in the garbage and nobodys going to rummage through it why worry?

Trash is trash.. I say any trash can will do... unless the trash can owners had to empty that can themselves...but I'm assuming it's the type of can they put to the curb for the trash men to deal with, in which case I say it's perfectly acceptable.

Heck even if they did have to empty it themselves, it was bagged. Wouldn't bother me.

I really see no problem with dropping it in someone else's trash can. It was sealed up. Why would you want to carry it all the way home when there is a trash can available. It's not like the other persons trash can had anything of any importance for heavens sake - it's TRASH!

Leaving it where somebody could step in it would have been far worse, that's for sure!

I think ANY trash will do if bagged and sealed. What is NOT aceptable is letting the dogs poop on others yards and leaving it there!! I wish we had bins here just for dog poo, as it is the trash guys say "no poop" so have to hide at bottom??? There are certainly worse yhings that go in trash!

Well i think if you are the one with the dog that also makes it your dog mess therefore it should go in the owners bin.I have three dogs and i put their mess in my bin.If i take my dogs for a walk i know where there are bins especilly for dog mess so i put it in the bin for dog mess only.

I agree with this in principle, but it wouldn't bother me if it had gone into my bin.
