Hermit crabs that is....sorry..i coudln't resist.
Anyway, the other evening i came upon a discusson where someone was tlaking about getting a couple of new hermit crabs as pets. This person gave me quite a bit of info about them and it was very usefull, but i was wondeirng if anyone else has ever had these little critters as pets?
If so, or if you just know anything about them, please share. I have a 20 gallon fishtank (that i used to have fish in for the longest time, but the last one finaly passed) and i am looking for a new pet to take up residence. Ever since i was little i had an interest in hermit crabs, ijust thought they were SO interesting.
Any information anyone can share about care, feeling, habitat set up and supplies would be greatly appreciated!!

The only time I ever had a problem with a smelly crab was when one of mine passed away. If you actually keep the tank clean and properly care for it, they do not smell.

Love the title...I've never had Hermit Crabs I think they look creepy and well they are rather small. I have to have big pets, I'm afraid I'll lose it somehow.

yeah, as i said, i just really coudln't resist the play on words....LoL
I already have a couple of cats and a hamster, and am just looking for a new member to add to my pet family. My boyfriend has been trying to convince me to get a pet lizard or a snake....but i really REALLY have a dislike for reptiles....*shudders* And i thought hermit crabs might be a good middle ground.

Well I can feel ya with the snakes and lizards but, if I would have guessed a pet for him I would have guessed that LOL
Don't the cats try to eat the hamsters? We had a cat and it always tried to play with my male goose and the goose would get the cat. We ended up giving the cat to my husband's mother because we were afraid that the goose would end up killing the cat.

zeph, look at the photo i've put in politics - it's not a hamster but close enough. hamsters and cats can be friends. sometimes. not often. now some help on please how i'm going to turn any of this into an highly unlikely gossip filled scandal story in the tabloid section?

i think they're pretty cute. i've only really come across them once - when i was very small and living abroad. we'd collected all these tiny, apparently empty shells off the beach and shortly after we got back they all started scutlling around. my parents put them into a bowl of freshwater with the idea of returning them to the beach the next day, which ended any scuttling the poor wee things were ever going to do. so i would guess don't do that, but i'm pretty sure that the type kept as pets as a completely different species.
