What is a wet market? Is it similar to what people in America call farmer's markets or street markets? (Vendors who set up shop on the street or in a specific area NOT associated with a specific store?) We have tons of grocery stores that are very competitive, but I prefer to shop at the biggest ones in the bigger cities-they offer very low prices and it is definitely worth the drive to save nearly $100 or more per shhopping trip.

Well, one really cool thing about Mylot is the fact that we learn new terms and how things work around the world! Without asking a question about something we don't understand, we may give an inproper response to the thread. No questions are dumb questions here on Mylot-remember that!

a wet market is a place where u can buy fresh poultry, meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and other agricultural products. they also sell grocery items. the place may not be always appropriate for some as u step sometimes on wet floor (due to a lot of washing done on fish, meat, etc.)
i have found a video to better explain what a wet market is in the philippines. please find time to view. thanks.

I always buy fish in the wet market because it's cheaper and there are lots of choices. I buy meat like pork or beef at the wet market too as long as I get there early so I can be assured that the meat is still fresh. I usually buy chicken at the supermarket because the chicken in the wet market are injected with water so the weight will be heavier. sad but true. But now there are stalls in the wet market that sells chicken meet and you can decide what to buy like thighs, wings, etc just like in the supermarket but it's cheaper.
The public wet market in the city is relatively cleaner than it was before and much more organized.

i also buy fish, chicken, meats..even fruits and veggies in the public market! just like what you have said, its much cheaper...and we can always ask for a discount from the vendors! hehe and with fish, i think its even fresher...although its more tiring to go to public market and yes smelly...its just fine with me...as long as i get good prices and discounts!
what i just buy in the grocery stores are grocery items! hehe
have a nice day!

I usually buy fish and meat from the supermarket. I like going to the farmers market to get fresh veggies and support the local farmers. I also go to a place called the Wharf here in DC. They have fresh seafood (i.e. crabs, fish, lobster, etc.)

i buy where it is cheap and fresh! and that is the wet market, of course.
sometimes, u can even find fishes which are still "breathing". u can buy live poultry there from their chicken "houses". u can find almost anything in a wet market. a bigger one for the city would sell anything... some already displayed on sidewalks... from slippers, dresses to condiments for cooking.. just about anything at very low prices. u just have to be "appropriately dressed" for the wet market and ur other senses being readied with the different smell and sight, lol ... and experience, too.

The groceries and superstore or warehouse clubs. I wish there were more open air markets here as they are more fun to shop at. In addition, the things are more fresh. One thing I worry about open air markets is the sanitation, especially when it gets too warm and there are thousands of flies swarming. That is the only drawback for me. With the wet market, it is the mud and dirt that annoy me. Otherwise, it is fun haggling with the vendors and the atmosphere is very festive and lively.
