Mid autum festival is around the corner. It is also known as Mooncake Festival, celebrating by Chinese people. It is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the chinese calender, which is usually fall in the mid or late of September. Lantern and mooncakes are selling everywhere in my country. My son just got his first lantern today from his grandma (my mother in law). It is a robot lantern, come with music and both hands and legs can move around,it also comes with a light on & off, using batteries to operate. So cute !! My son is so happy and play around with the lantern whole afternoon, He even bring his lantern to sleep with him this afternoon. I remembered well that my mum used to buy me a paper lantern when I was kid, for paper lantern ,have to use a candle to light it up and it is more dangerous. Do you buy lantern for your kid for this coming Mooncake Festival? Which type you prefer? Traditional or Battery type? Let's drop me a note. Wish everyone "happy Mooncake Festival".

oh.. thanks for this discussion... as a tradition in my house, the elders will buy lanterns for the young.. I remembered back those days, my grand ma will give us RM10 each to buy lanterns of our choice, and we will then bring the lantern back to the home town for gathering and 'showing' off our beautiful lanterns.. After dinner, we will take our lanterns and walk around the area with a big group and we really enjoys this moment.. back those days, our lanterns are lit up by candles.. now, I will still continue this tradition to buy lanterns for my baby starting this year, (even she is only 8 months old).. I would like her to see the different colours lanterns we hang outside the house on the day come.. Few days ago, I was at a shopping mall, and can really see all the nice beautiful battery operated lanterns which are very attractive.. have a nice festival too!

Shia.. yes, Singapore do have a good lanterns fair but not in Malaysia. Here, during the CNY, it will have some of those fair in one of the temple, however I do not hear any of those for mid autumn festival Now being living in the city, I don't think my girl will be able to enjoy those time I had back in my hometown, however I will still bring her (when she gets older) to let her experience it. Thanks for the early wishes, and the same to you and your family too.

Hi Cwong, When I was young, I don't really enjoy this mooncake festival as I am the youngest in the family and my neighbourhood don't really have a small kids like my ages. So I played the lantern by myself and always boring. Today, I just have my early Mid-autumn celebration,Have a reunion dinner with my in-laws. Whole table are full of nice foods. When the Big Day comes, I will bring my son to the lantern fair at my place here. Hope this year lantern will be better than the last year one. Singapore always has Lantern Fair at the Chinese Garden. I really wish I can fly there to visit the lantern fair as the lanterns are really nice, some even with Disney Character. Last weekend, my mother-in-law just bought a Robot lantern for my son.It is battery operated ,comes with light and music. It is very beautiful. Wish you Happy Mid Autumn Festival in advance !!

Dear Shia, Great to know that your son loves his first lantern. Make sure you snap some photograph of him with his first lantern as a remembrance. WE not need to buy because every year Jusco One Utama giving free lantern since my son is a toddler. Now, he no longer play those lanterns. He is more into computer. However, I like both types... I remembered when I am young, those candle lit lanterns easily burnt...LOL but they are beautiful. It is nice as decoratives.

When I was young, I used to play the paper lantern, easily get burn and sometimes the candles keep Off because of the strong winds.During my childhood, there is no battery lantern yet. Kids now are very lucky, have so many varities for them to choose and play with. Happy Mooncake Festival to you and your family !!

Hello Shia, We have bought a lantern for my daughter, it is a bunny lantern and use candle to light up. But she is not interested with playing with the lantern , she likes the candles much more than the lantern. So we play with the candles last night. We lighted up the candles around our balcony.

Hi Vingyan, Oh..playing with candles is very dangerous.Make sure you always at their sides while they are playing. I am yet to try on paper lantern to Ryan. As paper lantern is using candle,I am worry whether it will get burn easily and bit dangerous. Try to introduce battery lantern to your kids, probably they will enjoy it alot.Hope so !!They are so many models available now in supermarket. I overheard that my mother in law plans to have an early celebration for this year. Or else I have to cook myself on that Big Day as my mother in law will be on her confinement job soon. Happy Mooncake Festival to you and your family !!

Hello Shia, I have never heard of Mooncake Festival, but it sounds like fun :) In Germany we had a festival called Saint Martin's Day. Kids there Go around with Lanterns from house to house for Candy. They sing songs in front of the house than they get their treat. Later they all meet at the school grounds Where a Man dressed up in white ( Kind of like the Pope )sits on a white Horse and gives out candy and "Stuten men" which is Sweet bread formed into something like a gingerbread man . different cultures, different customs ...how cool is that? Have a beautiful day :)

Hi a_motherstouch, I never heard of the Saint Martin's Day festival before. Is it only celebrate at germany? Thanks for informing me about this festival. Another new festival for me to know and I would like to know more about this festival? When is the festival? Mooncake festival is celebrating by Chinese People only, kids are playing around with lanterns while adults are enjoying eating their mooncakes. There are many varities of mooncake in Malaysia, from normal bakery shops to the high level restaurant standard and they are plenty of flavours. I like to eat Jelly Mooncake and Phing Phi mooncake, they are served in cool.My mother-in-law will make these two types of mooncakes before MOoncake festival. And on the big day itself, we will have a reunion dinner. When I was in Singapore, I always went to the Lantern Fair at the Chinese Garden. They displayed so many design of lanterns, with lights and music. The disney character lanterns are very nice.

Hi Motherstouch, Mooncakes is make from flour, sugar, egg and some butters, and will have some filling(bean paste with diffrent kind of flavours inside the dough). They are many different kinds of mooncakes available in the market. When I was small, only traditional mooncake is served all the time, but as time pastby, new type of mooncake is invented .They even have jelly mooncakes and Phing Phi mooncake in the market. My mother-in-law is making some phing phi mooncake tonight with pandan paste. I can eat 1 piece of mooncake at one go.I am mooncake lover. My son also started to eat mooncake nd he loves it too. But I don't let him eat too much,as it is bit sweet for kid. From your explanation, it seem Saint Martin's Day is pretty fun and interesting festival in germany. Do you travel back to Germany every year?? In my whole life, I never celebrate Halloween Day. It is very scary for me as we need to dress up in a scary ways.I am worried that I will have a nightmare at night. Happy Mylotting!!

Hello Shia, The mooncakes really sound delicious. What are they made of? The St. Martin's day is celebrated in September I believe, It's been a long time for me..I have lived in the US for over 30 years. Since I left Germany They have adopted the American Halloween celebration. I was amazed to hear this when my Sister who lives in Germany told me about this. As far as I know St. Martin's day is a German festival only. Have a great Day :)
