Is a person born with a green thumb or can anyone learn to grow stuff? I guess what im trying to say is do certian people have this ability or is this a learned thing. I always love plants but never had good luck. My grandmother and sister were very good with plants. I never really had a place to grow anything but i have always wanted to have a veggie garden. I have grown few plants in pots before but they dont last. I have thought alot about getting an aerogrow. If anyone have ever had experience good or bad with that please share here.

When my oldest daughter was still young and living at home I would tell people that she could plant popsicle sticks and grow five flavors. Plants just seemed to do well around her. If I had a plant that was ailing I would have her take it in her room and soon it would be healthy again. I never did figure out her secret.

Lol!!! A 3 yr old discussion? Ive moved since then and last summer did a container garden. Most the lot i have is paved. There is a small area thats covered with gravel. One day while sitting outside i desided next summer im going to clear away some of the gravel make a bottomless box frame. Dump potting soil into and plant right in there. That way if they need more than the soil i provide they can just grow into the ground under. I told my sister about my idea and she said that is called box gardening. Ive desided to keep trying with the gardening till i get it right.

I've recently moved into an apartment myself and have very little space for growing anything. They do let us plant around our sidewalk and as long as it stays within the area of our own apartment. I also have a patio and plan to do some container gardening.
Did you receive the friend request I sent you? If you don't want to accept it I will not take offense, but if you did it would make it easier for me to find your discussions sooner than three years. I wanted to send you a PM but I can't unless we were friends.

I think some people may be "born" with a green thumb but I'd like to think anyone with the desire can learn to grow plants. I, for instance, used to kill any plant I got. I didn't know what I did wrong; too much water? Not enough water? Maybe more sun? Too cold? ...well, once I learned what specific plants need and provide the best I can (soil, water, sun), I have done really well with every plant I come into contact with. I mainly work with vegetables so I not only get the beauty of the plant, but also the health benefits too!
Good luck! Just start with your favorite plant and go from there. I began with tomatoes and now I have a whole garden of various vegetables!

I also responded to a 4 year old discussion on gardening, lol. I didn't realize some of these were that old (they were only on the 2nd or 3rd page of the interest!).
I have a garden outside that is 10 ft by 5 ft. This year I added a bit more to it, about another 4ft by 5ft. I also have a front yard garden (where my tomatoes are). I just love growing my own vegetables! I'm definitely learning through experience.
I love growing my own foods too. I just wish I could do it all year round! I do have tomato plants inside during the winter but they don't produce much. I would just love a greenhouse!
Thanks for responding to my comment despite the discussion being 2 years old! :)

Well, it can be heart breaking when you are a person who is wanting to have a Garden and such and then you try to grow something, and never ever happens. Even with house plants and such you always seem to kill them. It often makes me wonder what a person needs to do to be succesful with this. But this yr. it rained too much to really consider doing a garden or anything, so I was not able to get my Tomatoes to try. But having a Green thumb and having everything come out right would be Good for sure.

Well, im trying the container garden again this year. Ive learned about compost a little. I saved some soda bottles cut the bottom off and made the top so it slide on making tiny green houses. Ive had some seed pop out of the soil. A couple ive re-planted into bigger containers. So far so good. I will just have to wait and see what happens now. I have desided to keep trying every year till i get it right.

You would think that I would have been born with a green thumb, my grandfather on my mothers side was a master landscaper. My grandmother on my fathers side was an amazing gardener. Me not so much. I used to to do great with the plants at work but I have not been able to have a plant inside my home that has ever lived. when it comes to vegetables I usually manage to grow one good thing a year everything else I try fails and it is never the same thing. One year I had a bumper crop of zucchinis, one year I did well with peppers, and last year it was tomatoes. I had a few tomatoes the pepper year but it was kind of pathetic. My husband really doesn't allow me to have the amount of room in the yard that I would really need to do well and I need to learn some things about keeping bugs off the plants and keeping bunnies from bothering them. I think that can all be learned though.

If i grow anything it would have to be in pots because i dont have a anywhere to grow anything. Thats why i was wondering about the areo grows. I have had some green thumb people in the family too. I always imagined my home being filled with plants. Lol!! It is but my plant are silk. Every one always ask if they are real.

I think there really are certain people that have a "green thumb" I am like you..lol..I never really had a chance to take the time to learn the ins and outs of growing stuff. I would love to learn though. Roses are what I want to grow..I love roses and it seems I kill everyone of the bushes I have tried to grow. My b/f is a green thumb..he can toss the seeds in the ground and with little care grow just about anything. I am jealous..lol...I did learn an old wives tale that I think is useful though..my grandmother taught me. She was a green thumb too and always had plants everywhere..lol..never touch or water when it is your "time"..you know the "time." The monthly time apparently has terrible affects on plants. I never believed it really until my family was planting trees around their property line and my aunt started on one side and my uncle the other and they were to meet in the middle. It was apparently my aunt's "time" and all her trees were just terrible looking All his were perfect and vibrant..a foot or more taller too.

Well, at least you have a green thumb living with you. I think my sister can throw a handful of seeds on cement and grow a garden. Thats how green her thumb is. But she lives 12 hrs away. Anyays iamtrying it again this year. Im interested in growing food, in pots because as always i have no where to plant.

I think a person is born with a green thumb. I have tried to grow things and learned methods on the internet and it never works out for me. About 5 months ago I bought a pack of sweet pea seeds. Out of 16 seeds only one of them grew and as of now it has only grown about 5 inches long. So ya I really don't have the ability to grow plants.

Sorry about not answering sooner. Seems that mylots never send me notification when some one post here althought they send many emais to me everyday. They just dont notify when its my discussion. I have learned that its harder to grow from seeds that with a starter plant. However iam trying it agin this year. Im interested in growing food. I planted 3 tomato seeds and all 3 poped out of the ground the other day. Im excited. Ive learned about saving coffee grounds, egg shells and fruit peels to add to the soil too. It said to cut them in small pieces to decompose faster.

that sounds like a good idea. you should try it and let us know if it works. i, like you, have never had luck with getting things to grow. the only thing i've ever been able to get grown good and healthy is 5 kids so, that dont qualify in this case. let us know how it works for your aerogrow garden. ok?
