A strange thought about the face identification software

I read an article about the technology of the face identification. This software can be widely used in the security field. For example, you can use it for your door. When your door recognize it's you, then it will open the door for you. It seems this face identification software is very advanced. But I have a doubt here. If I have your photo and I put it in front of your door, what will happen? Perhaps it will also open the door?

not only that. the thumb mark identification is being used here in many offices like daily time recording. i heard eyes are also used for identification nowadays. so it is really very advance technology.
thank you for this discussion.

I think the technology is a lot more sophisticated than that... for sure the software will require more than a photo to identify the person... like retinal scan, heat scan, and even voice scan... but it sure is fascinating... i wonder if there are already people using this... i don't think it is already available in my country...

That is a possible scenario. But then again, I am sure the people developing the system as a security feature would have thought of that too.
And I am sure they will also be adding some additional checks to ensure that the face in front of the camera is a person and not a photograph.
Most of the time, face recognition software is used in the field to catch terrorist or criminals at places like airports or bus terminals. It is rarely used as a door lock device. Cost alone is enough to put the regular home user like you and me to stick with the regular key and lock!

I just checked and there are available programming source code of facial recognition on the net - meaning I could possibly make one. I never give it that much attention 'til now, wow I'm so left behind. From what I've read above 3d is the way to go. But if 2d can be fooled like what you described then 3d can certainly be fooled too. Maybe by using 3d glasses used in 3d movies which trick the eye that its 3d. Thanks for sharing this valuable info Youless.

the technology behind it is the same things with biometrics which are now being used in other countries starting with the finger printing identification just like in a movies where the eyes are the one who act like a password same with hands. But if it identify with like beaming lights or computer reading with the face it could only detect the humans citing the x-ray capability of the machines. Then, a photos is not enough if the machine only identifies living human.

Hi youless! This is a very interesting discussion. If you have my photo and you put it in front of my door, it probably will open. I don't know. It sounds a little bit confusing to me. I have locked myself out of my house several times in the past, lol. This might help me but I would need to remember to have my picture with me always. I wonder if my picture on my driver's license will work. Actually, I have an extra house key I keep in the glove compartment of my car if I should lock myself out again. Kathy.

face recognition is a area which is still under research. I dont think the door is going to open if you put up a picture of yours in front of the door. It is because the system will recognize that you are putting a picture in front of the door.

Hello youless. Long time no see. I hope that you are doing well with your life and work.
It is the first time that I have heard about this face indentification software. I think that it is a cool and advanced technology ever invented or developed. I don't think that a photo of someone who holds the photo of the owner of the house will work. It must have a special technology to tell the difference of a real face from a face in a photo. Otherwise, this kind of technology is not supposed to be thought as advanced. What do you think of it, youless? Have a good day, my dear friend.

hi youless I have heard of this but don't know a whole lot
about it. I do think though that the software would have
some secret thing in it that would not allow you to take
your friend's photo and try to open the door with it.I
am sure the makers thought of all those contingencies and
provided for them.

well, i would certainly like that kind of technology, maybe if they could also put up an alarm similar to the fire alarm, it would surely freak out those prankers who mess up with the doorbell in front of our gate. if we have that kind of device it will damn hard for burglars to break in to the place

wow!.. I had the very same doubt a week ago when I bought my new Dell laptop which had face recognition in it. I tried showing a print of my photo, preview of my photo on an LCD screen - tried moving it to make it realistic. Still recognition failed.. So laptops probably use the 3-d scanning technology.. and about using this technology for anything and everything like home security, may be the technology requires backing of a powerful processor and we all know it costs. May be within a decade or so wat you said may happen [face recognition home security systems].. Great question!
