hi friends,
i am not an expert typist (not so slow but not so fast) just medium i think, .. so sometimes i stare on my key board while typing,
but sometimes i don't stare because i can remember the letters now,
because of the day to day work in front of the computer is a big help for me..
but once in a while i can glance to the keyboard..
i envy my mother so much, she can type very fast, even if she is already 48 years of age but she types so well and i like it, because it's her profession for 20 years already.. i hope i can be like her someday..
are you a home keys typist or not??
feel free to answer and share your thoughts here..
GOD bless and happy mylotting to all of you..
hugs and kisses,
janebeth.

I Am As Good Or As Bad As You .. I See The Board And Type All the Time .. I Also Envy the People Who Can Type Real Fast .. I Have to Look At the Keyboard And Type Even though I Know Where the Keys Are .. It Becomes A Habit After Sometime, I Guess ..

Hi janebeth, you need not wait twenty years to be skilled in touch typing, it is something easily mastered by practice so you'll never need to glance at your keyboard again. I taught myself in my late twenties on a manual typewriter with a touch typing book to follow so there was a lot of banging of keys involved then, which is probably why I even now press the keys too much. But it really is so simple to learn and your speeds will improve imensely. It takes me longer to submit a response on here than it does to type it.

Hi Jane!
I type the words without looking at the key board because I know the proper art of typing and after working too much on computers (including mylot) I can type at the speed of 50-60 words per minutes.

Hi Jane!
Thanks for your kind words. You know it very well that "Practice makes a perfect man". Therefore, if you work hard and consistently on key board and learn some tricks from your respected mother, you can also be a very good typist and you can also type at the speed of 50-60 per minutes. All the best.

i took typing in highschool and that is how i learned to type. it has stuck with me ever since. several years after highschool, i took a secretarial course and of course, that is what they taught too. i can type about 55 words a minute or so and can type without even looking.

let's wait for another 20 years, i think by that time you already like your mother.
but kidding aside, i know we can do it, even in a shorter time. practice makes perfect. like what i did. i am not a graduate of any secretarial or computer courses. but i can type faster than any other graduates of that said courses.
good luck.

Hi janebeth
well i dunno what home key typist actually means but if you are referring to the tiny little protrusions coming out from keys f and j then yeah i do follow themhehe...i don't look at the keyboard while typing but i am not a fast typer, i guess only around 25 words per minute or so, i dunno why but sometimes i also get a little faster, but i always return too:)
hmmm while typing sometimes i always miss or hit the wrong keys but i dont' look at the keyboard just clear the mistake by typing it once again without seeing and hopefully that should make me better at typing with time...well i am sure your mother is awesome at it... i dunno if someday i may be like her, lets see. . . . hey btw i like your avatar and what happened to your rating ? i thought i saw it blue somewhere . . .

well you're so lucky because you can type without looking at the keyboard, and that is very nice.. well 25 words per minute is not bad at all, but i think you
can improve it to 50-60 words per minute.. you just need more time to
practice and for sure you can make it like my mother too..
by the way who is
btw you are talking about on your last sentence??

Yes I am a home key typist. When I was transfer to supply department I was forced to learn how to type in right keys. I was looking at the letters of keyboard while typing I observed it makes my work slow so I tried to study how. I download a typing lesson and I even bought a cd to be able to study when we have no internet connection. I studied and I learned. Mylot also helped me to type because of the discussions here when replying and posting. Now I can type home key and accurately but not 99%.

About 10 years ago I decided I wanted to learn to type without looking at the keyboards. As a trained piano player, I can play music and never look at my hands on the keyboard, so I thought if I could do that, I could do it with typing also.
So, I bought me a book on typing and word processing that I practised with just 10 minutes every day. First of all, it showed me what fingers should strike what keys and then there were loads of exercises in there, to practice whilst looking at the screen and allowing my fingers to find the right keys. It didn't take too long and I got faster and faster. I still make the odd typo, everybody does that, but I have found that that skill is so very useful, especially since I can type longer messages faster on myLot.. - Derek

I used to type 130 words per minute. I worked as a typesetter for many years and that is how I got to be so fast. My typing speed was tested at 130 wpm but I'm not sure if I actually typed faster or not because I tend to slow down while being tested so I won't make typing errors.
These days, my speed has decreased. Age and disabilities have led to my speed dropping down to around 80 wpm, still fast in a lot of circumstances but nowhere near what I used to do.
My son once videotaped me while I was doing my work (I worked from home) and it honestly looked like my fingers were not even touching the keys! It looked like I was just waving them above the keyboard but I was really typing.
Being self-employed at that time, the more I worked the more I got paid and I would sometimes work 14 hours a day. Doing so much typing is how I got to be that fast. I'm not unhappy now with a typing speed of 80 wpm, though. It's still considered fast.

hi MW,
good to see you here, thank you for sharing your experienced..
130 wpm?? oh that is very great, you're a very fast typist.. how i wish
i can be like you, and yes i think age and disabilities really affect your work
and your typing skills but 80 wpm is also great and very very fast at your age.. i can also imagine you now the way you type, maybe your fingers are floating above the keyboards.. like my mom also, she types like that, like her fingers were all flying.. again thank you MW for dropping by and have a nice day ahead..

Hi, janebeth
I am a home keys typist and I type really fast. My sister-in-law once sat in front of me while I was mylotting with my laptop. She thought I was kidding around because she could see that I was listening to her talk while typing. She thought I was just playing with the keyboard but I was actually typing a response to a discussion
Well, I have to say that I think my only talent. I cannot sing and I do not dance, but I can type fast and without looking at the keyboard.
Have a nice day!
I like your avatar.

Yes I am a home keys typist. I took typing classes when I was in high school and I also had a class in college. I tested out of the home keys typist in college but still had to take a class because I was now typing on a computer and not a typewriter.

Hi, janebeth! I could type very well since I was in high school. My parents bought us a computer and at that time we did not have any internet connections at home. We mainly used the computer for typing or creating some documents or play games. My siblings and I learned to type using one of the programs, which I found quite fantastic and it really worked. My dad also bought me a traditional typewriter because since I was the head typist for our school magazine editorial board, I needed to type often. These days, there are so many free online programs on learning how to type, so, students nowadays are very lucky. You probably can also take advantage of the online programs to improve your typing skills and type as fast as your mom. Good luck!

Yes, I am a home key typist too. I am not a very fast typer anyway. I do make a lot of mistakes when I type so I have to look down at my keyboard when I type. It's kinda embarassing to see that I have to have my fingers on the home row so I can type words more easily, because other people don't even have to look down and can type out stuff really fast.

hi janebeth..
i am not so fast in typing. i am handling my computer from august,2008. so i am so slow and wanna to improve. believe me i just type by two fingers only. i surprise how some people type by all fingers. once i met a person who was so speedy in typing and as a result the writtings appear in display after his hands stop.ohhhh....
thanks.

I am a pretty decent typist. My problem is the numbers and where they are. When I have to do numbers and things on the numbers I have to look down. I know it is weird. I even know where colons, periods, are but them numbers are my problem.

I'm also not an expert typist but I cope quite comfortably. I downloaded a typing course once, but I think I've only used it twice. The effort was just too boring. I started off with one finger and slowly progressed to nearly all fingers on both hands. Although I remember most of the time where the keys are,I still need to look some times. One strange thing that I've encountered is that if I consciously try to recall where the keys are, I often mistype or need to look. The longer I type the quicker it also gets.
Happy mylotting!

The best way is to learn the keyboard first, by using typing tutor or a similar program. It is fun to learn by this method. Then, after you have learnt the keys, cover your hands and keyboard with a large cloth and type, resisting any temptation to look at the keyboard (it helps if you have a friend or even better, a younger brother with a stick allowed to whack you if you peek under the cloth). Seriously though, you will be touch typing in no time. I helped several of my friends with this method. Cheers
