Have you ever made or invented your own Halloween costume?

I have many times. But my little sister wants to be a princess this year..now that is not as easy as making a cat, Dracula, a reaper or witch costumes. She is 8 years old and is big for her age at 123 pounds but she is also tall for her age. She can't wear none of the kiddie costumes and most adult and junior miss costumes are way to revealing and skimpy, lowcut,or they are way to long and cutting it to it totally messes up the costume.Plus adult costumes are to costly to cut up for one use like that. Does anyone know where I could find free costume designs or places that give ideas? ..I love sewing and making stuff..so that wouldn't be a problem for be and be easy enough for me..but seeing a design would make things simpler. We checked out alot on eBay..but the ones she liked she couldn't wear. She wants a yellow one like Belle From Beauty and the beast. What was the best costume you ever invented or made for Halloween? The worst? My mom once made my sister into a mummy and she couldn't go to the bathroom all evening..lol add pics if you have them.

Halloween isn't an occasion that's celebrated in my country, so I've never really had the opportunity to experience it before. When I was a child, some friends and I tried to trick or treat one year, but all we ended up getting was a bag of oranges! No one was expecting trick or treaters, so there was nothing to offer us. Oh well, at least I got to throw a few eggs at doors and things like that! I can't remember if I tried to dress up or not though? I don't think so.

Eggs? I do hope they weren't rotten boy that would smell. They do egg people around here but it is usually rotten ones. And has caused some wrecks. So I guess you haven't tried toilet papering their lawn/trees?

My son had broke his arm, was wearing a weight cast and a sling and couldn't take the sling off. We went and bought him an old hat and took an old flannel shirt and buttoned it crooked, took a little face paint and made it look like his face was filthy dirty, then we took his halloween bag and tied it to the end of a stick to carry over his other shoulder. He went as a hobo and people loved it and thought the sling on his arm was part of the costume.
Another year for my other son, we took a box and wrapped it up in birthday wrapping paper and put a big bow on it, he went as a birthday present!
My daughter wanted to be sailor moon one year, earlier in the year for a girl scout dance I had made her a poodle skirt, I took off the poodle and shortened the skirt, finished making it into a sailor moon outfit.
My brother wrapped my nephew in tin foil one year and he went as.......a leftover!
With a little imagination and a few odds and ends around the house, you probably could make a costume out of a dress you could buy at a thrift store, goodwill or something and make it really cheap. I never really bought the kids a whole lot of costumes, seems that they use them one year and the next year they don't want it again.

Hmm. I'm not sure but I would check the Halloween costume patterns at a fabric store.
I've put together my own costume several times and my Mom helps me with the sewing when I need it. This year I'm going as a pirate lady and I've bought the material and my Mom is going to sew it.

I miss simpler times..it seems most is always paying way to much for a costume they only wear once. Yep, a ghost is good but sometimes ends up hot under there, but then again so do most costume mask. Thanks for your response steph..when it when something is simple and easy and works..it is best to go with it.

That reminds me of my husbands niece once went as a old lady in hair curlers with a sleeping cap, green face mask, and a old housecoat and nightgown of her grandmas and knee highs..and house sleepers and a cane.. You'd not think that is what a 17 year old would choose as a costume..but she looked great and won a prize for the most inventive costume.

It is a good idea. And I wish I were more creative. My mom did create a few costumes for me as a kid. I must confess I usually just purchase mine. That goes for my children too. I do however look for sales.

We did have homemade Halloween costumes numerous times when I was a child. One that I remember was when my parents dressed me up as a bag of jelly beans. Large clear trashbag stuffed full of balloons. Cute idea and I wish I could use the same one for my kids.
Another one that I remember is the year that I was a shaggy dog and my brother was a snowman. Both of these costumes were homemade from a book that my mother had found. Not costumes that we could keep, but something that was a lot of fun.
A couple years ago I helped make a Care Bear costume for my mom and then the following year I made her into Snoopy.
As far as helping your little sister to be a princess, perhaps you might be able to find something that would help you at a thrift store. I think one of the first things that you might need to start with would be a bridesmaid dress or a dress with a hoop skirt.

We are using a prom dress. it is peach so we have to dye it yellow and I have sewn it down to fit her and embellished it to be like she wants and bought tulle of ebay to help with it. It is coming together nicely. I just have to find the dye all the stores seem to be out of the yellow dye. Thanks for the tips and advice.

when my daughter was younger, she was a cat and the costume was entirely made by me. she wore black pants and a black turtle neck. we bought her one of those plastic head bands, i made ears out of foam for her and a tail out of a leg of a black nylon (stuffed of course!)

We did almost the same although I took black fabric and made the tail and ears. and stuffed them. Once she wanted spots..so we took some felt and cut out weird shaped spots and took double stick take and adhered them to the black clothes.

I have always made my kids costumes when they were growing up and as a kid...always made my own. I sew so that does help. As for a princess, now that is not a costume that I would sew. The material would be outrageous and it would be time consuming. I would for that go to thrift stores and look at the bridesmaid, prom gowns. I am sure you could find one that is suited for a princess there. Being only 8 years old, you may have to hem it but that is an easy fix. I actually never had trouble with the princess costumes...just check the thrift stores. also if it is low-cut you could perhaps have her wear a tank top underneath. The best costume i ever made was Raggedy ann for my oldest daughter. I made the wig myself and her dress. I also made a wig and out fit for her best friend to be Andy. They turned out awesome.

Hi, Thanks for the response. I just bought a few things on eBay to be safe..but material is getting expensive. I made a raggedy ann wig once for little sis when she was 6 months old for the costume party..kids look so cute as Raggedy Ann and Andy. Thanks for the tips they are appreciated.

I'm not big on the crafty sewing or creating from a scrap of fabric stuff, so I can't offer you any advice on where to find a design to make it yourself, sorry.
Last year I did make costumes instead of buy them as we were short on cash. My littlest used a hand me down batman outfit. For my daughter we bought her wings and a skirt, and I used some tops she already owned to create a fairy type outfit. My 3 year old son, I bought him a black tank top, red pants, sewed buttons on them, and borrowed a Disney hat from the neighbors and he was Mickey Mouse. My 6 year old was the costume we purchased, Speed Racer.
For my oldest, I shopped at the Salvation Army for most of his outfit, but of course got the Wig at Walmart. He went dressed as Hannah Montana. Now my daughter wants to be Hannah this year, I already have the wig, so just have to find an outfit that will fit her.
You can try looking at your Salvation Army or other thrift stores for like a prom dress type of thing that perhaps you can hem until it's short enough for her.

My mom found a prom dress and bought it.. but when I seen it there is no way..it is the kind that supposed to be tight..and it is gathered in several areas from top to bottom. I told her maybe a prom queen and make a white Banner that say Class of 2009 Prom Queen and use the tiara we already have and buy some white evening gloves and a thing of fake roses and wrap them in green tissue paper..but little sis is really wanting to be a princess..so the hunt goes on..

Halloween was our alltime favorite holiday myself and hubby always dressed up every year to hand out to the kids. we made our own. when i was a kid i usually made up my own. i would try some second hand stores and oriental tradeing post. for some supplies to help. oriental trading company. com is online. do a search. they are fun to order from. one yr. i ordered a really long black wig and some vampire teeth from them and then made the rest from second hand store things. i have a pic but not in my pc and the pricing is good for what they have. just make sure of quantity because they often have large lots of stuff instead of individual things. they did have the wigs individual tho.

I love oriental trading I get their books and I love looking through them,Me and my sister in law have ordered form them a few times especially when we are having parties. I got a huge bag(144) of spider rings really cheap and used them in all the spider webs we put up and I was spider lady and I had them allover my hair, one in each finger and glued onto my clothes..But right now money is almost nonexistent since we are catching up on bills and trying ot weatherize our house and still save some for bills this winter since hubby doesn't get to much work in the winter since he is a carpenter. I have taken my old prom dress and I have sewn it down to fit my little sis and made alot of adjustments and put on alot of embellishments and made roses to go on it I have to still dye it though but it seems every store we looked is out of yellow dye. the dress is peach..thanks for the response.

Good morning!!! How sweet of you to help your sister!!! I'm not a fan of Halloween & haven't created a costume since I was 12. However, I do have a suggestion. My Chiropractor had a daughter having a Sweet 16 theme party. She is very protective of her little girl & refuses to let her dress as provocatively as some of her friends. Her daughter wanted to be a princess & her budget was tight at the time & had limited sewing skills. So, she went to a consignment shop & found a evening dress that had a neckline she approved of. The sleeves were from the 60s being bell shaped. Her daughter threw a tantrum when she saw what Mom had bought. Well Mom bought some contrasting lace, bought some elastic, took out her sewing machine, & went to work.
She put some elastic in the sleeves at the upper arms & then in the appropriate places down the arms. She also added elastic at the wrist. She ruffled some of the lace & attached it to the areas she had added the elastic. She put some of the ruffled lace around the neck & bodice. She took a piece of heavy construction paper & made a pointed hat. gluing on some tabs so it could be secured with bobbie pins or however her daughter found necessary. She attached some of the lace from the point of the hat she had made. I don't know that I'm doing this justice in my description, but it was a beautiful dress. Even better, she said she only spent $20. Her daughter wore a pair of white walking shoes under the dress so her feet would be comfortable. I wish I had a picture I could show you, but I don't. Maybe it will awaken a new idea in your head. Since you can sew, the possibilities are endless. Good luck!!! You sister is lucky to have such a caring big sister!!!

When I was a kid we would always invent our own Halloween costume. There were 4 of us kids and buying costume was just out of the guess. We had more fun making ourselves up then we would have if we just wore one our parents brought from the store.

I think when a kid get to help make the costume there is more excitability to it and the event. I know it was that way with me alot while I was growing up.

Halloween is on October the 31st and I think it is one of the best fun filled holidays we have. Kids love dressing up and going out and trick or treating. I know the ones I know like it better then all the holidays but Christmas.

I have seven children with 8.5 years between the oldest and the youngest. One year, when they were little, I took them trick or treating at a local mall.
They insisted I wear a costume so I put a sign on my back that said, "All seven of these children are mine! How's that for scary?"
One year my girls wanted to be princesses, so I went to Goodwill and bought prom dresses and then took them up and had enough material letft over to make them little shaws and bows for their hair.
They were adorable!

We haven't checked GoodWill yet so thanks for reminding me. Thanks for the tips and I am hoping we can find a yellow one if we can. Yellow is her favorite color. And the color she wants. Thanks for the response.
