If I'm not mistaken, there are actually 3 different versions. Netbook, laptop & notebook. Netbooks are those that pretty much stripped down, portable computers that mainly used for simple online use & emails & have not a lot of attatchments to them, such as CD drive & scondary hard drive & so forth. Their hard drive size is small in comparison to others, although I've seen some netbooks that have over 250gigs in them. They are very limited to how much they can be upgraded. Laptop is next one up. Generally speaking, bigger hard drive size, extra things like CD & DVD drives, generally burners, faster speed, bigger screen, etc. Notebooks are even bigger. Notebooks are very similiar to "Desktop computers" but more portable. Highest memory capacity, a lot of room for upgrades. I could've left out few details but generally, that was my understanding of the differences.

Netbooks, as the name suggested, are initially made for people on the go who wants to always connect to the internet but don't want to sacrifice portability. They generally have displays smaller than 12", sacrifice optical disk reader, but generally still have USBs and hard disk. Some of them even have solid-state disk (basically glorified flash disk or SD Card) to replace hard disk so that the weight of the netbooks could go even lower. Netbooks are cheaper than notebooks so it is popular with college boys, light internet users, and female office workers.

Netbooks are small, I guess the screen size doesn't exceed 10'', there is no cd drive and are pretty slow working. When you need a computer on the go and portable netbook is the way to go, you can check emails and surf. Laptops on the other hand have more features, they are bigger and heavier, but I am sure you know that about laptops.

Notebooks are more multiple-purpose computers in a form factor of about ten inches and up. Notebooks can create content and handle heavy multi-tasking loads with many applications running at once. They can view, create, and edit high-definition video content and run intensive programs like computer aided engineering and mathematical modeling.
Netbooks are devices designed purposely for the Internet, to communicate, learn, and view information. They have in common a compact form factor of seven to ten inches, are light-weight, feature comparatively longer battery life than notebooks, and are less dependent on a battery charger during the day. They are easily portable and can be easily moved from one place to another place. They may contain more than one wireless method to connect to the Internet.

Originally netbook is the striped down version of a notebook. They have smaller screen, low power consumption and all of them has an intel atom processor. The whole idea of a netbook is it's low price. With notebook is the other way around.
