Can hacking be ethical?

Today, i've come across a book on ethical hacking in our University library.. when i saw it i just wondered whether ethical hacking is possible or what exactly does that mean? 'Hacking' means gaining unauthorized access, then how can that be ethical? Can you point out any situation where hacking can be done in ethical way.. what are your views on Hacking?
