Do you respond to posts with spelling errors? I find it a bit annoying when people do not take the time to look over and change words that are misspelled. I know it is common and I have done it myself but when I look at the title of a post and see them, I can't help but feel the person is a bit lazy. It is an automatic turn off to responding to the discussion.
Do you feel this way? Or, could you care less???

I respond to discussions even if there are spelling errors just as long as I can understand the topic and if I'm really interested in it. Whenever I encounter spelling errors from a non english writer I just smiled because I was once just like them. I don't usually review my responses just posting it right away, which is not a good practice by the way, that's why there are times I got some words misspelled. Other than that I don't have spelling problems but I'm really not that confident with my grammar:)

You seem very confident in your english now. I am impressed with how well you have learned the language. What is your native language? I love that people are able to use this site to practice their new skills!

Hi jodylee,
At times when we check, we can't detect the error.
After post the response, then we noticed it, but
it is too late. myLot do not have the edit button
that we can edit it...hahaha
In my case, I typed fast, and when error occur, it is
not highlighted with red underline even though I have
activated 'speeling check' on my Firefox. I think I
have problem with it. Since no spelling check 'ON', I
will read and scan through before I post. However, at times
we still miss to detect the error.
For myself, I will response to any topics of my interest
and comment to those responses I received despite any spelling
mistakes. Many myLotters here are not having English as their
first language. We need to be considerate at times...
So, let us have a wonderful and friendly community here at myLot!

I agree. Learning from others is how we expand our own knowledge base. This is a wonderful site to do that from people all around the globe. I have enjoyed many discussions in my short time here and have noticed my conversations changing with my friends close to home. I love when my mind opens a little more and I can see the differences start to show through.
I look forward to hearing from you on many more discussions!

Oh I agree that we need to be considerate of people. I was not trying to be rude with my discussion. I simply wondered how others feel. I don't even notice a lot of spelling errors. It is most annoying when they are riddled with them. I love the myLot community and agree it needs to stay a wonderful and friendly community. It is a great place for people to come and discuss and I plan to be here for a while. I certainly am not trying to pass judgement on anyone. Just curous, and... this has turned out to be one of my best discussions to date... :)

I tend to be a little more forgiving to those sorts of things. It could be just a typo that the person missed or maybe the person just is not a good speller. Also some of the people on here are from other countries and the language does not come easy to them. I, myself, am apt to make errors. I often get on here late at night when I get home from work. It's what I do to unwind before going to bed. I'll look back the next day and see some errors and wonder how in the heck I missed them. I do think that you are right in not responding if it really does bother you. I've seen some in the past that jump into a discussion and start picking apart someone's spelling or grammar and to me that just seems kind of rude.

I can't imagine going into someones discussion and picking them apart. I would rather just move by and not respond. I hear you on being on here late and missing things. I do the same things. I also understand the language barrier. I do think that you can tell when it is just laziness or when it is a learning curve. I could be wrong though.

Yeh, this one has to be taken care by all of us. But here, I think spell errors cannot be considered as a big blunder because of the nature of context.... I mean when we discuss with people by writing it is like something that we cannot go back and correct every discussion we do. it is a kind of boring too. It is our duty to take care to avoid spell mistakes as much as possible.

I have noticed that some posts have many spelling errors and grammar errors. I, myself, find mistakes every once and awhile in my posts. Most of the time I do a spelling check and re-read it to see if it sounds good. Some don't have very good grammar, such as myself. It can be annoying sometimes though if there is error after error. It can be frustrating. But, you do have to remember that some people are from other countries that are just learning the English language. And, sometimes it can be difficult to learn, just like every other language. I still read posts with errors. I give the benefit of the doubt. So, my point is, I read posts that have errors. lol

Hi jodlee, when picking a discussion to share my opinion and idea with the creator, I pay more attention to its content. If it’s really the topic which I’m hunting for, I would like to response to it straight away and never bother about the spelling errors at all. I always ignore the spelling errors, as long as I could understand totally what the writer wants to share with us. I do have typos or spelling errors all the time.
As what I know, many of us always seize the opportunity to write post here during office hour or while doing household chores, etc. I’m one of the latter ones Since we are doing it on and off while busy with other routine, as well as most probably in a rush. Therefore we don’t have extra time to check the spelling or reread the content again for sure. Moreover English is not the native language of all the members here.
Happy posting

I believe and trust you too my dear, the main purpose you start this discussion, just want to arouse the interest of us to participate in this good topic, but not having the intent to complain about anyone who might make the spelling error when posting
after joining mylot as member, I have more and more interest to write post here and to chat with friends here with this fantastic language, though it’s my third language. My native language is Chinese followed by the second language, our national language, Malay. myLot is really a wonderful site for us to have fun, to enhance our writing skill, to meet friends as well as to earn some pocket money here. That's why I always stick to this site once I'm free or if I could "steal" time to deal with it

Has English been difficult for you to learn? I have heard it is a hard language for some. I love the way Chinese sounds in spoken word. It is so beautiful and precise. It is hard to "steal" time to be here, but I continue because of the education I get when on here. People are full of opinions and ways of expressing themselves.

Thank you for sharing Ikbooi! I appreciate all your thoughts and I agree. They are all valid points. This site has certainly given me an understanding of how hard people are working to learn the English language. I so admire those willing to learn a language. I too steal time away from other things to come to myLot. I find myself more willing to rush at some points in the day more than others. I certainly have many errors in my own writing.

I admit it is a turn off for me...I usually won't even open the discussion if I notice an error. Not like I haven't made plenty of my own because I'm usually in a hurry and don't read over what I have written, but still it bothers me to no end when I see things spelled wrong.

An occasional spelling error doesn't bother me. If I see a title that is completely misspelled I typically ignore it. If there are a few spelling errors in a discussion it isn't a complete turn off. But if I'm reading along and I see a bunch of spelling errors, you're right it is a turn off! Mylot really does need a spell checker! I'm lucky enough to use Firefox and it underlines my misspelled words!

I reply to all the types of people with or without spelling errors as the way i look at it is that if alot of them were not on here then perhaps there would be less traffic on here and therefor no more Mylot. Not everyone is perfect i am sorry to say and if someone responds to a discussion as long as i know what they are trying to say do it matter?

Too true jugsjugs. You are so right about the traffic and not everyone is perfect. I certainly am not perfect. If I can understand the discussion, I can enjoy it. But, if it a good discussion night here at myLot, I find myself passing over the misspelled titles to head to one a little cleaner. Just my preference I guess.

Of course that i respond to the posts if have an intersting subject, even person who start have some spelling mistakes; Maybe for you, who have first language, mother language English,is easy to criticize other people who make big effort to make others to understand what they want to say...and i admire them to much for this efforts;
I am one who speak French, Russian, of course my mother tongue, and i try a lot, and work harder to learn better, English; this is a sign of respect for your country, that i want learn your country language; I am right or not?
How you can ask people if they answer to a topic if have spelling mistakes?
People like to answer original, intersting, topics; Is easy to criticize, is hard to try to help and respect!!!

I certainly meant no disrespect to you or anyone else who does not have English as a first language. I understand your point completely. However, I think I am able to start any discussion that I find interesting. I am curious if others feel the way I do. I am sorry that you took this personal. For what it is worth, I think you write very well and it is perfectly legible. I admire any person who can learn another language or multiple. I just find it sloppy when people cannot change typing errors. It makes me feel they do not read over the response and it irritates me a little bit. Again, sorry for making you feel I was criticizing, honestly I was just curious about others.
Happy myLotting :)

Hi Jodylee
Spelling errors happen for many different reasons one is that sometimes you just can't catch it I know I have some typos in my responses and I have also seen a lot from fellow MYLOTTERS.
Also there could be someone trying to break the language barrier and not familiar with English Grammar or Spelling.
Another reason it could be late at night or the wee hours of the morning and people are trying to do this half asleep
I have spell check and sometimes a word comes up and it will tell me its misspelled by underlining the word when I try to type another word there are times when I really don't know how it should be spelled and just leave it that way so I can finish typing . Because it doesn't correct the spelling for you it just tells you its spelled wrong and will continue to underline until you spell it correctly
Fingers hitting the wrong keys when typing to fast like some people I type as I think in phrases sometimes I leave out the commas and the apostrophe in my writing any person should be able to read the word dont without having to spell it don't
And finally no I don't get bent of of shape when I see typos I will either I just read past it as long as I can get a clear understanding as to what they mean I good to go. I have responded to many topics of discussions that were riddled with typos or spelling errors .

i have a bit of a spelling problem, so when i post a discussion, or respond to one, i tend to sometimes just blank out and accidently forget how to spell some words.
i usually work 8-10hrs a day and im trying to get out of that by trying to work online, (just gotta find the right means) so when im done at work, finished cooking and cleaning, and made sure everything is alright, i jump on the computer.
by this time im knackered! sometimes its even hard for me to look at the screen!
but ill keep going, the thing is that i dont really take the time to look again because im either, slack, buggered or plainly just dont know how to spell.
in saying that, i have seen many a message from many a people with spelling errors, and sometimes they have the same problem as i, sometimes they are just new to the language, and i guess sometimes, it just slips their mind completly too!
i wouldnt be to harsh on any of these people, (as i am one!)
some of them are genuine good people, and deserve some time and forgiveness.
by the way sorry for the erors! :)

I feel this way when I'm certain that the poster is a native English speaker, like a Gringo, an Aussie, you know. But there are plenty of young Philipinos, for example, boys and girls, ladies and men, who would have a hard time if we'd all start insisting on good Emglish.
Again, and you can see it whether it's bad English because of a lack of care, or bad English for trying and not knowing better, I definitely respond to the second class. They deserve it, I feel.
By the way, I'm a language teacher, so for me it's second nature.

that is true with some Filipinos as it is true with any other nationality. why ... i, too, had the chance to chat with some not-so-young (most even older) native English speakers, who also suffer the same weakness.
i guess it does not have to do with any nationality. it has something to do with doing anything in haste and of course .... education! God bless everyone!

The subject/content is far more important to me than the spelling or grammar within a post. I'm less likely to respond if alternate letters are upper/lower case as I just find it difficult and irritating to read in that format but, as long as I can get the general idea of what someone is trying to express, the spelling is no problem.

I'm not being bothered by wrong spelling, Wrong grammar does!
Spelling is in the eye of the writer and reader, they are sharing a personal journey together, if it is written so that the reader can understand the meaning and content that is enough. We have enough rules and authority in our lives, if our spelling is not perfect, that is okay by me. Besides being graded on grammar and spelling – I hope – I am being read by others for content, ideas and responses to their comments. Hopefully what I write is worth reading once in a while— if not…please let me know, because I tend to get diarrhea of the fingers sometimes.

its alright with me. i dont look for error or spelling or grammar as we are not all local english people here. some are here to practice their english aside from earnings. as long as i can read and understand what that people is trying to express then why not. its not easy to write and speak to the language that we dont normally use. we cant use our local language here as the policy is english only. so i guess we need to respect everyone too and not just based on their spelling and grammars. coz i admit, my local language is not english, but i tried hard so i can post and participate here and so i can earn even just a bit.
