Free: Avast!
Paying: NOD32
This is susceptible to people's tastes, of course, but in what comes to dealing with common virus these are the best solutions I have actually tried and proved useful, functional and light weight enough.
Avast!, despite being a free anti-virus, has a good engine capable of doing thorough enough searches to catch some hidden away baddies plus it's updated constantly. I mean, not only daily, but sometimes up to three times a day! If it's a simple enough virus, it should be able to find it and wipe it regardless of how young the virus may be.
NOD32 is a very good solution when it comes to paying for your software, because it has also many updates much like Avast! but the engine is better. It should clean not only what Avast! does but it should also intercept a few other nasty surprises.
Remember though, these are common anti-virus, they don't do miracles, and they're not prepared to handle with a hand-full of Trojans for example, so it's advised that you reinforce one of these anti-virus systems with something like Spybot (which is completely free) which will help keeping your PC healthy in a few cases.

Check out the article over at PCWORLD. They did some benchmarks. http://www.pcworld.com/article/158178/top_internet_security_suites.html. The best one though is the one that is kept updated. It amazes me how many people have let the software expire and run old definitions.

I use Norton which I bought in the PC store. So far, it's working well for me. But I sometimes use other anti viruses too; and sometimes there are conflicts, lol. I know I should use one at a time though..

There is no perfect antivirus, the important things is you update it regularly to keep you safe.
I'm try some antivirus like norton and kaspersky but they eat a lot of resources or in other words they are memory hog that why I shift to Eset Smart Security (NOD32)

i think norton is a good antivirus program
and so is avg
but u really need to have a good firewall and need to update the antivirus softwares regularly to be secure
also u shud have those spyware detector softwares life spyware doctor to remove all other tracking cookies, malware, spyware, adware, torjans etc
but honestly to remove pen drive spreadin virus like autorun.inf and recycler even these softwares are ineffective and u need to use good old MS-DOS to remove these viruses

I think the best Antivirus depends on yourself, my answer may be different from yours. I used Mcafe,Avg,Norton,Kasperskey,Nod32,Panda,PC-cillin,Rising,Jiangming,Kingduba before, and my choice is Avg.It takes up a little cpu and it's free to update.
In my opinion, you could try the Antivirus software in this website(http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenviews.com) one by one to find out which ome suits for you.
