I did enjoy my life when I had no jobs (high school and College). I was the one that decided to leave my current job. 2008 was the year of this job (albeit good pay). I never had an off longer than a week and I was always living week to week or from shift to shift. The last few months, I became rather discontent working there – probably burnt out – and so the decision to leave. Everyone though excepts you to have a job and so forth and I am feeling the pressure to find another one. But for once, I want to try to just enjoy December as it is. It’s been a while since I was unemployed and I’ve forgotten how liberating it can feel. I’m going to try real hard to ignore the pressures of everyone here and simply enjoy this moment in time – even for just a month or maybe more if I can take it. It’s like swimming up to the surface after a deep dive down in the deep end. I’m not used to it yet but I’m sure this chapter of my life will be nothing but extraordinary (if not, well, that’s okay too. hah. Life is still fantastic I suppose!).

Hey there firebirdlizant, why are you worried. You say that you are married, and your husband is having a job. So you need not worry about a shelter, food and other thing. Further more, you also inform us that you are collecting unemployment dole. so relax, it not that there are no jobs, in the world, it is just that, we do not want to do all sorts of work, as we are used to a certain kind of work. Look around you there are thousands and thousands of job, some may be quite hard, some may not not quite interesting some might be stupid jobs. Open up your mind, take even a job in a Gas station or a fast food joint. They also pay. something is better than nothing. Best wishes.

She also said that her husband does not make enough to pay for everything, and that her unemployment is running out soon. And you don't exactly have a novel idea, the "low rent" jobs you referenced, such as fast food joints, gas stations, department stores, etc. have now become very competitive as well. High school and college kids can't get these jobs anymore because middle aged people who have been laid off and have families to support have taken them. So it's not that Americans aren't willing to work; it's that it's one heck of a lot harder out there than you're making it out to be.

you right in a way but then again i do go out to find work and there is always alot of candidates for the job. its seems like even if a piece of my hair is misplaced, or my color suit is not right, or i laughed at the wrong time, or i put dots instead of one, or well you get the drift theres always someone one step better, one step ahead. yes at this time i do not have unemployment no longer. the temp agency i worked for totally screwed me. they said i would be employed with them for 3 months. well unfortantely it only lasted a month. i asked them if they had something else and they did not. then they call me for h&r block. i called the number they gave me and the the guy had me do a test assesment. unfortantly i had no idea about tax forms well i failed. he said i should wait and not worry and apply to the receptionist position they have soon. well i told the lady at temp agency they didnt want me for that position. next thing i know the paper from dept of labor came i filled out. and i went to bank on a wednesday when the money was suspose to be there.....it was not. what happened was the temp agency said i denied work. this was untrue. i got letters from the places they said i denied work and they said there was no work for me. even employers are trying to screw people cause they do not want to pay. i am still fighting this. 3 weeks later. nothing in the works and no money coming in. my hubby is supporting me and we have way to many bills. he says not to worry but then he asks if i heard from dept of labor. its so crazy how they make you wait so long and not even sure i will get it again. as far as fast food places i did not go to college to serve mcdonalds or burger king. but thanks for the thoughts. and responses.

This is so true, even Mcdonald's has become competitive! Even cleaning, any of it...the walmart here said they get 500 applications a day! I think we all feel your pain...maybe do what others are doing, start up a cheap shoestring business like cleaning or lawn mowing. Best of luck to you all!

Unemployment can be one of the most frustrating things in life. I've been unemployed so many times I cannot count but it was all a long time ago. Right now I've been working steadily for about twenty-six years straight so it appears I've forgotten the awful feeling of being without a job and having no money to do anything properly. Pray and keep searching. Try a home based business. Sell for a commission.

I have no job too. at beginning I felt very frustrating. it happened one year ago. I quit my job in Beijing and moved to the UK, but the economical crisis happened and I had no chance to work. my husband and I both felt upset. I'm still try to get a job now, but I'm not urgent. because now I really enjoy work at home. I'm a member of a few paid websites. Although the money is slim now , but if my english got better I think I can make more money, so in some meaning I'm not in hurry with a job. maybe because I had worked at office over 10 years and I was really fed up with the life. now it's the time to enjoy life for me.

hi homeshoppers i did not lose my job because of my hubby. it was due to budget cuts. not sure where you got that. my hubby is still working but i just dont want to have him pay for everything we always helped one another out. i never had this happen and a job lose is a hard thing to cope with especially in this kind of economy. have a happy and safe new year.

Your discussion was 4 months ago. Hopefully you have found a job by now. But I was going to say at a time like this where jobs are limited. Finding a job that you like isn't as important as just finding work whether you like it or not. I would say look for anything. At this moment it is really important to try to keep up with the bills. Just find something that pays the bills, while working there you can still continue to look for the job that you like.

firebirdlizant I do feel your pain. My own son is in the same fix, he is searching all the same places as you, and he has been out of work for almost 11 months.he comes to visit me in my retirement center. I am here because he lost his job and we were evicted from our apartment. this economy right now stinks so bad. I wish to God I could give you some answers, but at least your husband has a job and is working. I am my sons mom and he was the only bread winner for the two of us. I was forcibly retired just before I turned 80 thus I had only a very small social security check so couldn't help much with the rent. You seem to have covered most of the same bases my son has worked on. Could you perhaps start a small business from a hobby of your own, working out of your home? some people do and make a success of it.good luck and God bless hope you and my son both find jobs soon.

how about borrowing some money to make food for sale like snacks, deli or even candies. If you are not into food, you can try making soap, or other cleaning materials because these are basic needs people buy everyday.

Finding a job can be very difficult right now. Try craigslist. There is a lot of stuff on there and at the very least you can usually find temporary stuff to make some quick cash. Just keep looking and doing those interviews. You'll find something soon!

I'm going nuts being unemployed. I graduated 4 months ago after doing everything right. Good college, stellar grades, great involvement, internships and I'm still unemployed. Even retail doesn't want me when they can take someone with management experience to be a cashier. My parent's are gracious enough to let me stay in their home and feed me but I don't want to leech. They also aren't going to pay my student loans off for me and those are about to start coming due. There are 2 things that have gotten me any interviews: 1) Temporary and Staffing agencies 2) Networking. I'm gotten contacts of everyone I've gone to school with, their parents, my boyfriends parents and their co-workers, family connections. Hiring managers are more likely to look at your resume if someone who already works there hands it to them. If you are getting interviews but nothing after, you might want to look at how you present yourself in an interview.

actually in the first month of no job or being jobless is good because we can relax for a month but if it will take a year that we are jobless then i think i will never enjoy my life, that is why i am happy now because i have work and i can buy and have what i want.

I have heard that the person who is most likely to find a job is one who is already working. I don't know if that is true or not. The problem that I see with that is where does one find a job where he/she can take off for interviews for a better job?

If you have a local employment agency, try them. It will probably cost you up front, but they will work hard to find you a job. That is their job.

Quit messing with the internet to find work. Get hold of the employment people in your state and you can get an extension. I don't know how old you are,but they will also train you in computer if you want it. They will also train you for a lot of jobs if you are serious about working. Take the time to give them a call--I am sure you have their number in your handbook. I am just off unemployment myself and since two heart attacks have applied for social security disability----good luck on your hunt, just call the employment people Monday. they will be more than willing to help !

I do not know about that because seems you have it covered. I know you are looking in local papers also. Go to my profile and look at the website page I have on their. Will take about 3 weeks to get on at the most. Pay is once a month automatic. You will be able to work on this and also work on a regular job. Look at it you will know what I mean. It will help you get extra money every month. The amount you get depends upon you.
