I have never been on an airplane. Tomorrow me and my sister (who HAS been on a plane) will be taking an hour-long flight to Chicago, IL from Minneapolis, MN (USA). Not too long of a flight.
What are some things I should know about the plane ride, or the air port?
Anything I should be warned about?
Besides that I'll have to take off my shoes, and that I can't bring bottled water (all my sister could think of - lol).
Please share your experiences with me! Thanks!

Hi!
I never took out my shoes!!!
About the water, you can by it after check in...
All I want to say to you is: be calm, relax, and if you got lucky enough to be near the window, just enjoy your view!
No need to be afraid. Airplane is still the safest transport in the world.
BON VOYAGE!

Consider the flight to be a bus Journey that you need to be there a couple of hours beforehand for,due to security Measures, and look up the info on the TSA website about what you can and can't bring on the plane, and put as much as you can in your hold bag(s) so you don't injure yourself or anybody else putting things into the overhead bins..wear comfy slip on shoes..bring some gum to chew at takeoff to keep your ears from "popping"..and as it's your first time, get a window seat to see what you've been missing! Also,Make sure to bring Your ticket,ID,and Money/Cards..if it was an international flight,I'd say check your passport is up to date,as you might not be permitted to fly if your passport was close to it's expiry date..as it's an internal flight,Your driver's License should be ok for ID and boarding the flight, but again, check the TSA site. also,Enjoy Your trip!

I'm glad you enjoyed your first flight,You'll know what to expect next time! I like flying at night, with the views out over a city I took a look around your other responses to see was there anything I forgot to mention in mine..someone said you should bring along an Ipod..good idea, but the only thing about electronic gadgets on a flight is,the Attendants insist you turn them off bfore and during takeoff and landing, the same for cellphones which they don't allow you to use at all (yet..some aircraft are being upgraded with equipment that will allow cellphone calls from in flight)..I liked having a favourite tune to listen to during takeoff when I had my walkman player along, but it's not permitted now,so you can only use headphones during the flight once they've told you you can..now I bring a book too! Something to entertain You isn't that important on a short flight, but transatlantic or long haul you'd be wishing for something to do if nobody's feeling talkative and the inflight movie sucks!

What you can and can''t bring, you can ask the airplane company. But for your comfort, wear something light, sneakers is the best , and please get some gum. It helps to chew gum when the airplane taking off. You know sometimes it get annoy , sounds like popping in your ear. Chewing gum really help. When the plane already took of, and you can take the seat belt off, ask alot of water from the cabin attendant. It help with the skin too. A lot of times your skin get dry very easy when you travel by plane.

First off, be sure to arrive at the airport at least a half an hour early, to give your self plenty of time to get your bags checked and give yourself plenty of time to beat the lines at the airport, especially if there is a holiday of some sort. By plenty of gum to chew on the airplane, so your ears won't plug up. Also, when the plane is taking off or in the air, you might want to take pictures of the outside scenery from your window as everything outside of the plane gets smaller and smaller, or take pictures of the clouds. Whenever I go on a flight, I also like taking pictures of the clouds. That's always fun.

Well, first thing you have to know EVEN before you go to airport is belongings which are not allowed to be brought into airplane. For example : liquids (above 100 mL, I think, I don't know it for sure), metal equipments, and any other restricted devices. However, you will be passing through the security gates, which means that you will never get into airplane with bringing restricted items. Because it is not a too long flight, I don't think something bad will happen to you. Maybe you can just sleep during the flight. =)

Obviously you don't have the horrible fear of flying like some people do. That's a plus attitude. Certainly there are differences in travelling by land in terms of what things you are allowed to bring with you and how much you can carry but normally this should not be a lot of concern though.
My first experience in air travel was a good one. I have always believed that travelling by plane is a lot safer than by car and this is statistically true. The first discomfort I had is when I heard strange sounds in the plane as it prepares to fly and when we encountered turbulence in the air. Fortunately, I was reading a booklet on what to expect when one travels by air and it helped me a lot.
For whatever it's worth, travelling by plane is a good experience and lots of fun too. Before you fly, remember that there are literally millions of airplanes that take off and touch down in any given time all over the world and it is indeed an exciting experience.

Just do it I guess! I haven't flown for a very long time now but I do remember when I experienced my last flight and it was very enjoyable. I think that the best part about flying is the taking off and landing aspect. When you are slowly taxiing on the runway and then you suddenly stop you realise you are about to take off and your adrenaline really gets going. As you slowly start to accelerate you are pulled back into the chair as you are going so fast and it's really exciting. I wish that I could fly more but as always, it's a finance issue. You have nothing to worry about in my view and once you have experienced this you really will want to take to the skies once more! Andrew

Well, the first time I take a plane I really feel nervous and excited. before the plane starts to take of I really pray hard very seriously that my first flight would be safe away from crash incidents. I think it may sound funny but I never stop praying until the plane get to the destination. I pray to God, including all the angels and saints to make my first flight experience better. When the plane meet slight turbulence when passing on the clouds and taking a a circle routes, it really feel terrible as i could not take on my mind the images of air accidents is really terrifying. I hold the hand of my companion tight as i pray hard it really felt stressful. The next times I take my plane flight again it is an awesome feelings it is the most fastest and very comfortable transportation compares to traveling by air or land. It feel relaxing and i learn to fight my fear of heights..

Hi maezee, well long flights are desperately boring and uncomfortable but you are spared that with a short flight. One thing I always try to do is take an aisle seat as near to the safety exit doors as possible in case of emergency. If there is an irritating child behind you kicking your seat make sure you put a stop to it at once or you'll be putting up with it for the whole flight. Suck a sweet at take off and landing to prevent pressure build up in your ears.
Have a good flight.

Hello Maezee,
My first flight was to China. I have forgot how I encounter all the check in procedure at the airport all by myself and guess what, I just try to follow what other doing there. And I did check for some sign board.
Here I try to give you some simple steps while check in at the airport,
1. Get to the airport
2.Go to the Check In Counter with your Ticket and Luggage , It should be very easy to find. If you cant find it dont be afraid to ask.
3. The person at the check in counter will check your ticket and verify it with your ID or your Passport. They are also going to take your luggage and put it on the conveyor belt.
4. They are going to give you a gate number where you are going to need to go to board your flight. It is called boarding pass.
5. Before you get to your boarding gate , your going to pass through a security check and a custom check. While you walk through the security check your going to place your carry on bag in a x-ray machine as soon as it passes through you can get it back.
6. Proceed to your gate. At the gate there's going to be a whole bunch of seats , you will wait there until someone calls your flight.
Hope all this helps! Enjoy your first flying!

Don't forget to bring gum! I didn't bring any, and my ears were killing me. Other than that, bring your iPod or something so you don't get bored. An hour trip isn't bad at all, but still if you bring some music or something, it will go by much quicker.
Oh, you might want to take dramamine, if you get motion sickness or anything like that. I don't need it when I fly, but I've known people who do.

If you're taking the economy dont expect any comfort at all. The space is so small that you wont be free to move your body esp your feet. Take the seat near the window so you could enjoy the clouds of different shapes. Dont expect your seatmates to be friendly.

It sounds like you might have had some bad coach/economy experiences in the past. Of course I bought economy tickets - they're SO much cheaper. And surprisingly, although I wasn't comfortable per say, I had enough leg room and those around me were pleasant enough!

Hi maezee. I would suggest that you look up your airport's website or check out the following link to see what isn't allowed:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
Get to the airport at least one hour early for parking and going through security if you already have your tickets. If you don't you should arrive 2 hours before your departure time.
Make sure to bring some gum with you so that your ears don't pop!
Happy flying!

Just relax and and take it easy. Get to the airport in advance and check in, once you check in there is no way the plane will leave without you. Make sure you dont have anything sharp or dangerous in the handbag. Then you can go through security, I dont know your security laws but usually if your shoes are very thick you dont have to take them off, and no bottled water or any liquids off course. Once security is done you can relax on the boarding lounge.
when its time to board the aircraft theres no need to hurry. I usually wait for all the rush to get over. Once on the plane the flight attendent will tell you where your sit is. For short distance flights theres usually around 40 rows, so you can judge where your seat is approximately. During take off see if you feel dizzy, if you do you can close your eyes and you should be ok. But theres a bag in the seat pocket just in case. During the flight your ears might get blocked, just hold your nose and exhale and everything should be ok. Have a safe and happy journey!
