I like something well-written, well-paced, strong plot and storyline, and a clear character voice. My preference is Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Paranormal Romance, although I'll take some unusual Mysteries and Thrillers too.

I really liked "The Time Traveler's Wife." It's kind of sci-fi, but not in the general sense of the word. It's a romance that has paranormal elements - but not ghosts, vampires, etc. It was one of my favorite books this year.

I would look at these:

and the http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780060596378&itm=1 - Abarat Series by Clive Barker

Beneath a Marble Sky sounds like a facinating read, especially since I always had a soft spot in my heart for a well-contrued historical fiction with the merest touch of romance and political intrigue.
Abarat seems to have received rather mixed reviews, especially the opening volume. And the second volume looks to be a classic fantasy type plot thing. Not to mention the fact that the rest of the series have yet to be released. Are the books that good?
