Tactical Attack of the Bargain Hunters!

Tactical Maneuvers - Sometimes shopping for bargains is like waging war on the stores!

I was watching a show the other day and it was all about tips on how to save money on everything, not only in these trying times but all of the time. There was a couple on the show that had been married a little over twenty years and had three children. They claim that in all of that time they had Never paid full price for Anything. Not clothes, food, cars or even the houses they had bought! Anyway, they were showing on video a couple of their shopping trips. One to a second hand store to clothes shop for the family and one to the grocery store. The one to the grocery store is the one that amazed me the most! Obviously they were coupon clippers so each of them had a handful of coupons, they only shop once a month for the entire family, (their children are all teen agers), and of course they buy in bulk and freeze most of the perishables that they buy for the month. This in itself seems very logical to me, and I was with them up Until they walked into the grocery store! They got two shopping carts, "his" and "hers" of course and then the woman did something I had never seen done before. She calmly opened her purse and produced two walkie talkies, "his" and "hers" of course!!! I could Not believe it! THIS is where the "tactical attack" came in! He went in one direction and she in another and as she told the story they are Never out of contact with each other! So when she sees something like ground beef on sale for instance, she walkie talkies to him and he has to run around the store to find out all of the different prices for, (tomato sauce, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers...FOR INSTANCE), so she can tally it up and see how much it would cost her in total to make spaghetti for the family This Month!!! Of course, like I said, spaghetti was just a for instance but this is the way that they do All of their grocery shopping, every month and have been doing it this way for over 20 years!! Now I am All for a bargain and I go for them just as much as the next person, but there is no way in the World that I can see Myself and Hubby running around our local grocery store for a few hours trying to pick up bargains via walkie talkies!! First of all Hubby would Never do it, he almost had a heart attack from laughing when he saw the couple on the television show, and If I found myself walkie talking to him, he would probably have slipped Out of the grocery store and taking a nice 2 or 3 hour nap in the car...Or be sitting next door in the bar spending all of the money that I had just saved on groceries while waiting for me!! Now I must admit, walkie talkies have their place, like when you are trying to keep track of someone, but as a "tactical attack" in the grocery store??? How about you? Would You do Your shopping via walkie talkie "tactical attack" to your partner/friend etc.? By the way, for the sake of argument, I am Not putting these people down for the way that they save money, I think to each their own and if it works for them then my hats off to them and anyone else that uses this method, I am only saying I found it a bit strange as I had never seen it done before and I just know it would not be the way for me.

LOL It seems kind of goofy to me, but I'm not big on saving when it comes to groceries. In fact, I'm the opposite. I usually do stupid stuff like buy the real brands instead of generics, just for the heck of wasting money on it. . I wonder if these people include in their "savings" the cost of buying walkie talkies (which can get pretty expensive!!) and the cost of having to constantly change the batteries. Plus the overall embarrassment of doing something like this in public. I wonder if it's truly worth it.

Hi Maezee! Hubby and I said the exact same thing about buying the expensive walkie talkies and batteries, I guess they Really had to save That month didn't they?? As far as embarrassment goes, I agree with you 100%! I wouldn't do it and for Sure Hubby Wouldn't as he is a lot easier to embarrass than I am...BUT! These people don't think a thing about it. I suppose after you have been doing it for over 20 years it doesn't fase you! They have also written a book all about it and on television they said they were very Proud to be called the cheapest family in America! Of course if I had all of the proceeds rolling in from the book every month I Might not be That embarrassed either!! Thanks a lot for responding and have a great week-end!

I think that if I saw this couple in my local grocery store, I would have to stop and have a good laugh. I love a good bargain as much as everyone else, but this is going a little too far if you ask me. Just buy the pasta and canned spaghetti sauce for Pete's sake! LOL. I have a 12-year-old daughter, and I would never make her buy her clothes at a thrift store. I can't spend $80 for a pair of jeans, but I will spend up to $30. We usually hit the stores on the weekends that they have their holiday sales or clearance sales. Last weekend, we went to Wet Seal. They were having a wonderful clearance sale where just about everything was at least 50 percent off, and then you got something of equal or lesser value for a penny. What a deal!! Then, we went to Macy's where they had a bunch of stuff on their $14 and under clearance rack. My daughter now has a whole new wardrobe and I didn't have to spend much. She's happy that her clothes are "name brand", and I am happy that I didn't have to take out a second mortgage on the house. There are plenty of ways to save money without looking like a total idiot in the process.

I agree with you sometimes when you find clearance, end of the month or after holiday sales you can get some great bargains! I also agree with you if I were in the store and saw this couple I would just die laughing, I don't think I would be able to go on with my own shopping as they would probably kick me out for disturbing the peace! And YES! There are plenty of ways to save Without looking like a Total Idiot...after all, I look like an idiot Enough Without Any Help! Thanks a lot for your response and have a great week-end!

Wow, I am all for a bargain too and I will coupon clip if I must and since I have very little money, I do, sort of. But there is no way I am going to visit the grocery store with a walkie talkie to my spouse so we can shop like that. It sounds totally ridiculous. And besides that, I know you used spaghetti as an example but why make homemade sauce when its cheaper to buy the jars that are on sale and they taste just as good or better than any homemade I've ever tried. No, we do one major shopping trip every month too but it is nothing like that couples' trip. Of course maybe we don't save as much as they do but still, there are better things to do with ones time.

Hi Horsesrule! The first thing I thought of is how ridiculous they looked running around a grocery store with walkie talkies like they are either protecting someone of "Great Importance" Or trying to swoop down on an International criminal and capture him/her...BUT the second thing I thought of was about having better things to do with ones time! Now I have to admit, they probably do save a lot of money, WHEN everything is counted together, shopping for clothes, groceries, cars, houses etc., and I am sure they do, But! I happen to think as you do that I could find something better to do with my time and that it is worth more than a few cents here and there on a jar of spaghetti sauce etc.! And I Thought... "I wonder if those people ever considered the time they spent saving 3¢ or 10¢ or even 20¢, that they could have used That time spent on saving the pennies at the grocery store by working an extra hour or 2 or 3 at their jobs and make much more money than that in the long run"?? Thanks so much for responding and hope you have a great rest of the week-end!

Hi Cher! It's not really a show as such, these people were on one of the hour long talk shows and that day the subject of the show was Tips on how to save money. I also make a list when I am ready to go to the grocery store and most of the time I stick to it unless I happen to come across a sale on something not on the list that I just can not pass up...beats buying it next time for full price! And if I find the product I am looking for on sale then I will buy that one instead of the one off sale...if it is cheaper of course. And I am not the type that sticks to name brands, in truth I Rarely buy name brands Unless they are on sale cheaper than the lesser known brands so in this house you are liable to find Any brand! I also do as you do and head off to the bargain/sale rack as soon as I enter other stores...I figure if it's clothes, then I don't wear my clothes inside out anyway so no one is really going to say to me... "Oh my goodness, you are not wearing a designer label"!! BUT! if I Were to wear a designer label, I just May wear the item of clothing inside out or my unmentionables on the outside of my outer wear so Everyone could see!! Thanks a lot for responding, have a great rest of the week-end!

Those people are insane! Can you imagine the time and energy that it took just to plan that little shopping outing? Who has the time for that? And coordinating let alone training kids to cooperate? They sound like one of those families you see on tv that are so obsessed with sweeping their children have no lives.

Hi Canellita! You Know you just might have something there! Maybe it's not about getting bargains at all! Maybe it is about figuring out how you can keep your kids from not having a life! Face it, if they have no life then they can't get into much trouble now can they? Good observation! Thanks a lot for responding and have a great week-end...what's left of it! Oh! and hope you got your computer problems worked out!!

Well, I managed to solve the boot problem and the missing .dll problems (so far) and today I actually got my computer to recognize the presence of the DVD drive in Windows so we'll see. When I reinstalled Windows my coputer reverted back to October of 2005 so I have had to go through each of my programs to see what works and what doesn't. Installing missing components without a working optical drive is sometimes tedious and sometimes impossible. A few days ago it wouldn't let me participate in myLot discussions! I have a good friend who is an engineer who has helped me trememndously. So far so good...
