One man's meat is another man's poison

Dog's meat is a popular delicacy in some parts of the world but this western guy seems to be enjoying dog meat for dinner. I could not imagine how some people could be so inhuman as to kill dogs for the pot. Many consider dog as man's best friend and rear dogs as pets but in many countries dogs are reared for food. Does this video evoke your appetite to try on dog's meat? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MY0JI4jtyU&feature=related

Im aware that people from different cultures eat different things. I suppose that would be a way of handeling strays other than just killing them for nothing. I would never try it because the only meat i eat now is chicken and fish. I have tried frogleggs many years ago. It taste like chicken. I had went into a resturant to buy some fish and they had frogleggs as a special.

Stray dogs ending up in the pot, that is too cruel. Those stray dogs sometimes carry diseases and how could one ever want to eat the meat. Frogleggs are better as it is meant to be eaten. They are specially breed for food. Though I have not eaten before.

Personally speaking there is NO WAY that I could ever eat dog meat, and personally this is unhumane as well. I cannot see how people from other countries can really do something like this. I have heard of dogs disappearing from neighbors backyards even just because someone got a little hungry. The thought of this just continues to grouse me out for sure.

It is gruesome.I thought that it doesn't take any difference whether it is a cow, goat or dog till I saw that video.I just could not stomach the man's best friend hanging there skinned and grotesque. It somewhat reminds me of cannibalism.I can understand that you cannot justify certain things.

I must admit to not watching the video as I am not brave enough. On the other hand we eat cows and pigs which certain cultures find awful for religious reasons.Depending on where you come from and what is normal and how hungry you are, some cultures eat rats once they have been throughly cooked at 70degrees or more for 20 minutes they are safe to eat with no ill effects. Not that I am tempted. When in Rome as the saying goes.Horse meat used to get frowned upon but many people eat that around the world.Given the choice I would not eat dog but depending on where I was and how hungry I was, never say never.

Ok this was a touchy issue I imagine. But now for a little humor, what kind of pets do people who eat dogs have?

Horse meat, aren't they tough meat? People here eat crocodile meat to strengthen their immune system as many believe it has medicinal value. But many think that dog meat is good for warming the body. What ever it is supposed to do to the human body, dogs should be made a protected animal so they won't end up in the slaughter house.

HI Zandi, meant to make my own comment last night...Well I think by now you know what an animal lover I am and have done my share of looking into what would be considered as animal cruelty and seen enough horror videos such as undercover videos from animal organizations where cats and dogs are skinned alive in China for the fur trade...in fact most fur trim on clothing IS the fur from cats and dogs--I saw that video over a year ago and can still "see" it in my mind as it was a video one can't forget...ever. The thing is in most Asian countries cats and dogs are eaten--in fact I saw a show many years ago about how people and cultures viewed cats over the centuries...from being worshiped as gods in Ancient Egypt to being sold at oriental markets for food--they showed a market where one could pick out which cat they wanted from cages and that was for their dinner. Yes, most of us are at horror at thinking of eating dogs (or cats)---only thing is, you have to remember, those who follow Hinduism would think we were the barbarians for eating cows as they are considered sacred--so the question is then..who is right, who is wrong? Of course I'm TOTALLY against the idea of eating dogs or cats

I can well understand your love for animals pye. We cannot point our fingers and say they are wrong as that is maybe part of their culture and eating dogs meat is just like anybody else eating other type of animal meat. Dogs meat might be a delicacy in some Asian countries but seeing this video of a western guy eating dogs meat makes me wonder whether dogs meat has acclimatize the tastebuds of people from other part of the world.

hi zandi458 oh dear I could never ever eat dog meat,
that is really disgusting to me, I love dogs and cats'
as true friends and pets, not as food. yuck. I hope
to never see that meat served nor ever eat it.
That to me an American is really vile to do and just
looking at my friend's dog makes me sad to think
that in some places they are killed and eaten..

I can't imagine anything that would inspire me to try dog meat or for that matter horse meat. Intellectually I realize that these are delicacies in some lands or just food in others but I am a creature of my environment and don't think I could change. Anyway, I am a picky eater even among the foods that are socially acceptable here.

hello zandi458,
I created a similar discussion but there's no video link to and it was bout in one of provinces in my country. some do it simply because it was their tradition for almost more than a decade, i couldn't believe it myself that they allow this despite of the law that states dog meat is not considered for consumption.

hi LetranKnight^^;;
sorry to say that this is happening in my place and it is indeed a tradition and sometimes we cannot easily break traditions. The thing that makes me disagree is when our local government officials allow dog meat restaurants to operate. Can u imagine that? RESTAURANTS! It is for business and no longer just for culture.
I had seen how dogs were butchered in the neighborhood and it makes my stomach turn and i really feel pity for those poor animals.

Well, I have this discussion once but what made me post this again is when I see the video of this western guy chewing the dogs meat and leaving all the meat or bones on the table just to show the world that he is really eating dogs meat. I think his comments were all fabricated just to please his host.

I don't eat any animals and have a vegan diet. I have two pet dogs. I don't think it would be right to eat a dog or a cat in my home country. I love animals and they are my friends. Did the food have a face? That doesn't sound very nice. I agree that "one man's meat is another mans poison". Any meat would be poison for me.

I believe most westerners frown at the idea of dogs meat as many are animal lovers. Unlike in the third world countries where animals can be their pets and can also end up as food for them. I have a terrier with 5 puppies and they stay indoors with me. I am a dog lover and would never approve of people eating dogs meat.

OMG! That’s disgusting! Not only the idea of eating dog meat revolts me, that pot of dog stew or whatever the heck it was looked really awful and I would NEVER try it. I have a hard enough time with steak especially lamb; my husband eats it and I don’t because although I don’t consider myself a vegetarian, I just don’t care for red meat too much. I do eat chicken but I could never kill one or eat one that I have seen walking around.
As for dog, I have a pet dog and she’s my friend, who could eat a friend? It makes me feel really sick...

Dog meat is eaten in some cultural minorities in my country like those who live in a mountainous village. They even prefer to exchanges their fresh harvest vegetables fo a dog meat. They believe eating dog meat could cause their bodies to feel warm thus they could survives the cold atmosphere on the top of the mountains. They even have food stalls where the main menu of the day is dog meat serves in different recipes, while in the market anyone could buy dog meat. Even though it is illegal in some parts of the country their still exist dog poaching where it is the source of livelihood. It is a cruel things to eat man bestfriend but some people just have the appetite for dog meat.
