This baby, Jool, is so cute, but she has an annoying new habit. She gets on your lower arm and sucks on the skin near your elbow. She makes all kinds of suck-y noises and kneads and pretty much disables that arm from doing anything, and gets it wet. When she's taking a break from sucking, she'll come up and rub on your face/chin, then go back to sucking. I mean, she's really sweet and loving, but really! And she's beginning to get heavy - she's probably 3 pounds! A pretty good indication we need to get those feral kittens caught and fixed... We have GOT to find this baby a new home!!

she will suck on the stuffed frog when the roomie won't let her suck on her while she's working, but she'd rather suck on us...

I got a good laugh from reading your description of your little vampire kitten. I never really thought about it before but they can be little blood-suckers, can't they! I had a kitten that loved to sleep on my side while I slept. The problem was that he got big but never outgrew his habit. He did the kneading thing, too, and those claws would sometimes go right through the covers and into my skin. What a way to wake up, huh? I'd love to take one of your kittens. My husband has been saying for about a year now that he would like a new kitten. I think we're doing fine with 2 dogs and 2 cats but he apparently wants another one. I was thinking about going to the animal shelter to get him one so I'll probably do that before Christmas. Good luck in finding homes for your little vampires! From my own past experience, it's never hard to find good homes as long as the kittens are free.

well, I hate to "give" them away - what kind of person will value her if they didn't pay anything for her? better for them to have paid something so they know she's worth something, and not just a cat to throw out when they are tired of her - like she seemed to have been, found by a dumpster after all.

at least a few of these cats were probably "free" kittens that weren't so much fun after they got big and either went into heat or started spraying - I've got a lot of "free" kittens, but if you aren't willing to spend money on them for vet care, than you shouldn't have one - 29 cats, 25 of them fixed and the 4 that aren't are going to be as soon as they are old enough

Just cause they pay for them doesn't mean they won't still dump them. At one point, we had close to 20 cats. People buy them as kittens, then they turn into teens and get gangly and non-cute, so the people dump them in the country and get new kittens. We had so many each year, I was quite certain it was the same people dumping over and over. Now our neighbors seem to be getting most of the overflow. The cats hear our dogs bark, and our male is unfriendly (he's taken to sitting at the end of the driveway every night, I think to deter new cats), so they go to the other house. No dog or patrol cat.

Reminds me of some of the Cats we had back when I was growing up as kittens. We had one named Striped Sox that used to love to suck on your feet, or your socks especially. No matter what we tried even as he got older he was like this. So maybe this is something that Cat will grow out of, but something it will continue to do as well. Good Luck with catching the other cats and getting them fixed and New homes. That can help solve some of your issues for sure.

yeah, its been a challenge these last few months, but the feral kittens are actually pretty good at keeping out of our way, so they are very low impact

I have heard that cats that act in the manner you describe were weaned too soon. This may or may not be true, and the so called authority did not offer a solution to the problem.

oh yeah, she was too young, but rescued from behind a dumpster at 3 weeks old - the annoying thing is that she only really started this in the last couple of weeks at almost 10 weeks old

she sucks on a stuffed frog when the roomie won't let her suck on her when she's working, but we have to keep that away from the other cats and dogs because they might damage it (the dog likes to disembowel stuffed animals)

Have you tried to transfer her nursing to a nonanimated object such as a stuffed toy or a small blanket? You might dip a corner of the blanket or one of the toy's paws in milk and give that to her.

The kitten sounds so adorable, 3 lbs and all. Makes me miss when Frowl was a kitten getting into all kind of trouble. I just had to learn to start wearing pants because she would climb up legs with her claws to get on my shoulder and see what I was doing. I hope you find a great home for the suckee-suckee kitten.

What a cute kitten Jool is indeed! I remember having kittens do similar things to me too, especially when they were very young. Toes seem to be a favourite with them for some reason. There is a very good reason why kittens, and even grown cats, exhibit this kind of behaviour though. It is usually because they have been taken away from their litter mates and mother to soon, usually under 12 weeks of age. Because they haven't really had time to learn what is cat behaviour and what isn't, they use these behaviours on humans too, believing they themselves are human. It is mostly a comfort thing, somthing they do when they are feeling stressed, but it can also be a sign of contentment. Rehoming her is going to be very hard. She is firmly bonded to you, which means if she goes to a new home, she will stress really badly because you aren't there. The transition to new owners is then better done slowly, which is probably better for you too (we all know how attatched you are to your cats!). Visits by the new owners on a regular basis for a few weeks, until Jool starts to show highly affectionate behaviours towards them, and then it should be easier for her to go and live with them. It is hard giving kittens up though. I've done it in the past, but would much rather have kept them all myself! Yeah, I'm selfish, but how do you choose one cat/kitten over another? It is impossible!

yeah, and she was discovered at 3 weeks behind a dumpster - so, yeah, she was too young, but couldn't be helped... I've never had a problem, since she has also spent time with the other cats so she's not too attached to us - she's really friendly even with strangers and I think she'd do well being rehomed at this point - not like Oliver who spent 3 of his first 4 weeks with no cat interaction (unless an occasional hiss from the big cats counts as interaction...) with just us, it wasn't until he was 4 weeks that any cat paid attention to him, that's when Rygel crawled into his bed and started teaching him how to be a cat - those are Oliver and Rygel in my avatar...

Cats sometimes do get into annoying habits. The cat we have now when he is hungry will nibble your skin will give you small bites like he is trying to say "I am hunry." You need to feed me now. He is a very cute kitty but getting bit by those sharp little teeth is not fun.

hi ElicBxn wow I have never seen a kitten do that but was she taken from her mom too early perhaps and is trying to nurse your arm? sound silly I know but why else the suckind sounds, unless your kitty, he he he, is a bit psycho. I am kidding of course. That must indeed be hard on your poor arm.

yes, she's nursing, but she doesn't get a vacuum up, mostly its just a bit annoying to find this furry attachment that gets upset if you move her she was found behind a dumpster at 3 weeks, so she was taken from her mother too young

That sucking is just sooooo darn annoying. What do they think? that you will give them milk from body parts not meant to produce milk? And it tickles. Yes, get all of them fixed so that there are no more babies. If the suck monster is that lovable, there is a good chance someone will want to adopt her. Babies are always cute. Give kitty a ton of kisses for me.

oh, the suck monster is incredibly lovable, just finding someone to adopt her... it mostly is annoying because you can't use the arm in question easily - I did type this discussion with her attached to the arm, but its pretty hard to get her to let me put the arm in the right place to start with... and remember - I have 29 cats in the house and 25 of them are fixed, and the ferals will be fixed as soon as we can re-catch them.

If you have a trap it would be easier to catch the kitties. I have a great trap. It's by TRU-CATCH TRAPS.. CATS. That is what's written on it. It's so soft and quiet when the door closes, that the cats don't even stop eating. It's the best trap on the market. If you can get the un spayed ones in a room and close the door. Put the trap with stinky food in it and someone will go in and eat then just hang out until you come back. What I like about the TRU-CATCH traps is they don't develop trap fear from it. Also because the door closes so quietly, the cats don't put out all the fear scents that the next cat to be trapped will smell. It really is a great non threatening trap. My cats will even lay on it and go in for no reason if the door is opened. The only downside is they don't fold flat for storage. A small price to pay for a superior trap. Finding room to store one isn't a big deal. It's not like you have to store dozens. By the way, I have no financial interest in the company. I don't make one single penny even if every singe myLotter would buy one. I just like their traps. This is not a referral link. www.trucatchtraps.com

Hey Elic! She sounds like such a sweet little kitty! I so wish that there was some way that I could take her! I love her name too! I would love to have a kitten again! My boys are going to be six soon and they should have another brother or sister to play with! I'm not sure how thrilled they would be at first, but I think they'd come around! If it was up to me I would have my apartment filled with kittys!

Honestly, I would like about 15 fewer cats, but who would I give up besides the ones that are already up for adoption - I promised to keep Chalube and Kit, Sassy is 18, Oliver may only be 4, but he's never known another home - heck, he has never spent a night away from the house. nope, the ones up for adoption are good to go, but the others will have to be thru attrition

To quote ya; If it was up to me I would have my apartment filled with kittys! LOL--uh, NO you wouldn't want a lot of kitties...that's what got my mother and I in serious trouble, but then we did have a LOT. I wouldn't mind having about two or three more though myself, but no can do unless I want to get into trouble again as I'm only allowed two

Our cat is about 9 years old, and much more than 3 pounds. Does your little kitty have fangs like our cat does? LOL I don't know how his teeth grew in, but if he had a trunk, he'd look like a furry elephant. haha He does that to us all the time. Now he's sitting on top of the TV set licking himself.

her teeth are normal, in fact, she's one of the best babies we've had about her teeth and nails, she's just licking and sucking, but not getting much suction up and barely touching us with her nails

I've had a couple of kittens that did the kneading sucking thing. My vets said it was because they had been taken from their mothers when they were still too young. They transfer their neediness to a substitute Mum. Pretty sad really, poor lil kittehs.

I wonder if Jool is going to have that habit the rest of her life. I had one kitty, Whoopi who throughout her life loved sucking on earlobes...talk about a wet mess--she'd suck on one lobe, change to the other, then change back again..it was a habit she had all her life. When I had to give her up to a pet rescuer, sure enough she did it to her

My cat is 13 and he does a similar thing, he suckles on my clothes and especially likes wool and kneads; he would do it for hours if I let him! I fell asleep on the couch last weekend and the cat laid next to me and suckled my sleeve for the whole 2 hours I was napping! It is no longer cute and I find it annoying but all I can do is discourage him by stopping him as soon as he starts unless I’m asleep of course!

I've actually heard about other kittens that go for earlobes, think the texture must be like mom... also, some cats go a little nutty for earwax - don't know why, but I've had more than one that would fix cotton swabs out of the trash to lick the earwax - ick
