How do you get people to practise recycling?

I have an issue with my family about recycling. I am all for recycling and practice it. In my house there are several containers for the various recyclable items that get thrown away. At my mom's place however, EVERYTHING gets tossed into one bin - aluminium cans, paper, food scraps, glass jars... no matter how often I remind her that these things should be sent for recycling. My sister's apartment is pretty much the same. Can anyone give me any ideas how to convince my family to separate their trash?

I have the same problem with my parents. They just don't understand that one day the earth will fight back and we will lose. What I do is this....When I go over to their house (which is almost daily), I will take a couple of bags with me. I will put on my little latex gloves, and I will separate their trash for them. I throw the food out to the critters (we live in the country) because they have to eat, too. The things that I get to recycle, I don't even bother to tell them to run them by the bin. I just take the stuff myself when I take my own. It seems to work. I save the planet, and they don't have to spend gas money driving to the recycle bin. Also, they don't have to pay as much every month to have the garbage picked up, because there isn't as much of it.

You've got a very good arrangement there. Unfortunately I live very far from my mom so I can't go sort out her trash much! Thanks for the suggestion though!
