When my kids were young and doing homework, I would play classical music in the background. A friend told me she had done it in college when she studied, it helped her retain more, she had learned this in one of her classes. My daughter got older and changed from classical to alternative, the music thing worked for her, she still studies with music, she's in college now, doing well. My older son changed from classical to hard rock and rap, when I'd go to say something to him about his music being loud and disruptive and not studying, I seen that he WAS studying and it worked out well for him. My younger son listens to techno/metal and acid rock, he listens to it while he studies and it really does help, believe it or not. He hates classical, but I've forced him to listen to it and learn it when he's in the car and can't escape, as it's the basis of all music. I would recommend listening to music with no words, classical, japanese zen, turned up enough to hear it, soft enough not to disrupt your thought process. As you get used to having music in the background, change the music you're listening to. Go at a slow pace with the music until you find what works for you.

My parents listened to country music, nothing else. As a teen I started listening to 50's and 60's (the oldies) my older brothers listened to rock.I started listening to everything and have encouraged my kids to listen to everything from classical to rap and everything in between. Now they have their own favorites, but know so much more than other kids their age(s)

very experimental comment.i just posted a similar comment on another response.Actually all depends on how was your childhood atmosphere in home?which type of music was played frequently in your home by your parents.in childhood,we tend to enjoy music as our elders do but we donot feel it but when yous sing or listen that music after long time.you start enjoying it.thats where you start listening music even if you are studying or doing any important work..So one thing is sure..always play a meaningful and smooth music to your younger. happy mylotting

I think it really just depends on the person. I can't stand to have music or tv on while I am trying to work. BUT have many friends who are just the opposite and work well and concentrate better while they have music on. Same with school work. I think if it hinders their ability to concentrate, they should NOT have it on while doing the work. That is about the only remedy I can think of, unfortunately.

from all the response,it is clear that that reading is not simple thing as others.someone likes to study with music, some not.So study as it suit you.

I think the problem with the music that kids listen to is the music itself. Too much bass beats. Too much bad language and images in the lyrics. It forces the mind to respond in a certain way that isn't always good. I like to listen to music to put me in either a creative mood or a focused mood. A lot of classical music is no better than rock, it has too much harsh quality so that the mind is disturbed or distracted rather than opened and soothed. Good piano or acoustic guitar works well. Some music that might be called "new age" can be good although some of it just puts you to sleep.

good point...listening one kind of music is better than going for all type of music..due to which your mind fails to make flow with the music.it better for student to listen some classical or any other smooth music so that they not get disturbed. last point of your comment is very humorous giving way to all that nuisance and beep music which either donot make comfortable or help us to make concentrate rather making us to sleep...very nice

I think that this would all depend on the person doing it. I listen to music while doing my own personal studies all the time and I always learn more and more and get more notes written down whenever I sit down to study up. Some people are easily distracted and some people aren't. We are all different we have to remember and we all have different learning techniques and styles that can help us out when we are trying to learn. I think that music playing while I'm studying helps me because it helps me too stick with my readings and studies.

agree with you..its uor study habit that makes us comfortable with music.one thing i would like to add that when someone is habitual to listening music from his/her childhood he/she is bound to listen music even in his adulthood while studying.

I'm waaaayyyy beyond studentthood, but I have real problems with music while I work. Sometimes I can't work without it in the background - other times it drives me mad! Guess it depends on how the mind is functioning at the time, and whether the music is in sympathy with our brain waves. It's all about harmonics, apparently (well, so they told me in the student's union bar, anyway)

absolutely, you have to synchronize your brain with music..if you want to be multitasking person. for example in morning we are very fresh and calm so even playing rock music donot bother us but as soon as day passes it becomes resistible.

I do not see that it is difficult for children or anyone to concentrate when listening to music. To be completely honest, I concentrate better when there is music going. It keeps me interested and motivated so that whatever Im doing isn't so boring or tiresome.

Well, the easiest remedy is to turn the music off! Nothing simpler. But if you want to listen to music while you're studying, listen to music that doesn't make you think about it more than what you're studying. I like music on when I'm working, but I can't concentrate while certain pieces are on, or certain songs. Music with words makes it especially hard to study. http://mikecrowlsscribblepad.blogspot.com/2008/09/listening-to-john-adams.html

agree with you.instead of stop listening music, one can even feel, when you are just awaken or going thru ipod in very morning time.you feel undisturbed in listening music and you go on studying difficult subjects but its not true for whole day..as soon as you past the day..you start losing your concentration(least at night).

I have the same problem.. And I think I know the reason! Here it goes: You generally play the music you like and have already heard it many times.. Right? So when you have the particular song playing and you are trying to study, you will naturally tend to hum along or sing along with the song and not concentrate on your book.. So you can try listening to some average numbers, which you might not like very much in particular or you might not have heard at all!! It might work out.. The remedy works for me sometimes.. But still I prefer not having any music playing if I wanna concentrate properly on what I'm studying!!

i do know that the mind can only focus on one thing at the same time with a little knowledge of what's happening around it. maybe these sutdents can concentrate a lot more if there is some sort of noise in the background. i think it just is a matter of getting used to. although i'm pretty sure that the music shouldn't be a favorite or the mind would be singing to it and thus the failure to study would happen.

I always needed some background noise when I studied. Music worked well, as did TV. I don't know why, but when it was silent I just couldn't focus. My mind would wonder and all the sudden I would realize I hadn't done anything for 20 minutes. I know it's not like this for every one, so I guess they just need to find what works for them.

I've noticed this inability to concentrate while music is on isn't localized to studying itself. Have you ever noticed that when one gets lost while driving, the first thing one does is to turn down the music? Personally I can't concentrate on reading anything while music with lyrics is on. If I have classical music on, my study is actually enhanced. Is this true for anyone else? For me, the difference seems to be having music on that has lyrics, whether the lyrics are being sung or not; therefore, muzak, or elevator music is still bad for study for me. However, I know many people that for whom not only listening to music, but having it LOUD is seemingly necessary for their study. I don't know that their studying would result in better marks without the loud music, as they've never studied without it, but they seemed to do fine, judging by their marks.

i can never concentrate on my studies or homework except when there is complete quiet everywhere. I can never and never will be able to multitask or finish something well if at all, at the last minute right before the due date. i'm virtually incapable of "winging it" for any task of importance.

Complete quietness doesn't really fit with your username.

Hello,in my opinion, the best remedy for this position is that you'd better not to listening music when you study.you can listen music after you finish your work.

It's difficult for students to concentrate studying while listening to music because their attention is being divided with different tasks. It takes a lot of concentration for a person to fully absorb what he/she is studying. A person loses his concentration when he/she studies and listens at the same time because as soon as he/she hears a song that he/she likes, then he/she suddenly sings that song and forget studying.

Hi amit066, The best thing you can do is to listen to very light, soft classical music over the cd player. Do not use your earphones, instead let the music flow in the room. In this way you can concentrate on your studies more as you do not really have to understand the music but just make sure you can feel it. Do try and let me know. Regards.

I have know some students who just could not concentrate unless they had music to listen too. I on the other hand have to have complete silences if I and going to student something or just reading a book. If I have music on I can not concentrate on what I am trying to read.

Yes It is very difficult to concentrate on studies while listening music as the concentration may divert totally. Because we involve in music a lot than in studies. So i always does only onething either studies or music

In my opinion,it is impossible for a person to do two things at the same time ,just like what you say .Because you are listening music ,you couldnot concentrate on studying. If you want to study ,you can never listen music at the same.

Here's my suggestion, listen to music that doesn't take your focus away from your studies. Opposite music to what you love. Allow me to explain. When I need to study, read books or write a paper, I listen to classical music (Chopin, Bach, Beetoven etc.) and jazz (George Benson, Grover Washington Jr, etc). I am a great fan of Oldschool Hip Hop, R&B This types of music would definitely take my focus off of my studies. I would be dancing and reminscing about my teen years and school parties and such. This is what I do and it works for me.
