I personally think you should be able to look up anyones criminal record up for free. They are records and they should be public for all to see free of charge. I think people should have a right to know who their dealing with. I know I want to know about a person before I hang out with them. It could save lives to make sure you are not going to hangout with someone of a dangerous nature. It would be great to have complete access to this information.

Hi tuckersheri...
I will have to totally again with you. To have access to someone criminal record could save someone from dangerous situtation. What I mean is this. Let say that you have a teenager who wants to go hang out with a new friend. You don't them or their parents. If you could have access to their back fground then you might be able to find out if they have been any recent trouble. It shouldn't be private anyways. If some is in trouble and go to court for it you can find out that info on local court records.

i think this will help add up to many people's wrong judgement to people.. tendency is for us t judge a person already by what we have only seen. i think we should know these things but by research, not by putting up everything about a person online, where these information can be expolited.

In many states you can look up someone's criminal record online for free. I know that you can do this in Maryland from one site that covers every county. This came in very handy for our family when my step-son's exgirlfriend filed court papers to change his son's last name to hers. I had gone to the site to check the status of some traffic tickets my son had gotten and checked Erin's name just for the heck of it. Once I saw her court filings and her claim that she didn't know how to contact my step-son, which was a lie, I was able to inform him and help him draft a letter of objection to the judge hearing the case. This stopped her in her tracks.

It's a bad ideas. Imagine you are once a criminal and you want to have a new life, but people keep criticism you because they know you have criminal record. Don't give you a chance to have a new life. How will you feel? Of course there are many more bad points about this ideas. But I am just give one example.

This all sounds very good but I don't trust the companies that handle the information to get it right. It's okay to want to be safe but if that means an innocent's safety is compromised because some over-zealous people decide to lynch all the crims in a 30 mile radius I don't agree at all. The problem with companies processing this information is that so often they get it completely wrong and people are targeted mistakenly. This is not just criminal information but all of our 'personal' information which is held by certain parties and sold to interested companies for the likes of credit checks. If you do some research you will find alot of information held is incorrect and the companies do nothing to right it. If you look at this from another point of view you yourself could be on the receiving end of bad information. I would agree if they were factual with no room for error, but it is just too flawed.

i agree with you. i think on some sites you can like part of their criminal records because my mom has did it before. i tried to but it didn't work out to good. Theres also a site where you can see how much someone makes per year she also goes there shes real smart when it comes to being nosey. but yeah i think you should be able look at anyone whole record free i'm not sure how dangerous that will be for them but if they did the crime i think it should be out there for everyone to see. it sucks everyone makes mistakes just think about if they made a huge mistake like killed someone when they were a teenager i think they should have the right to tell you and not have someone look up there info and tell everyone that they know. i don't know theres so many bad things and good things that comes with knowing.

yes it would be great to have access to that information
some states do give public access to the information
I know Missouri does
if a person is in or has been in the Missouri system their records are publicly accesible which is great in my opinion because I think that the public has every right to know what sort of people they are dealing with

A very good question indeed. Theres good reasons to allow a free check of anyone records. Yeh it would be good to know who you are dealing with, especially someone who could potentially harm you or even kill you. Businesses could also benefit from this from knowing the history of their employees. However I dont think it should be open to everyone to have a look.
Maybe they can do something where you get to see the record if you have a good enough reason such as business deals, seek employment etc and only major crimes or repeated crimes should be shown. Giving everyone the right to see your information can sometimes have a bad affect. For example if someone was arrested for stealing something small and the person has totally changed it could affect their lives if they are denied some opporunities

I don't see this as a good idea. It's true that some criminal are dangerous and we should know about them. But might want to change themselves and don't want anyone to know about their dark past. Once people know, they'll start being sceptical and being treat differently.

i think we should be able to do that. that is very useful for those who are dating online. it is hard to really know a person by just facing the computer monitor and being fed mostly with "good" things about himself. it saves us time and effort in "being" with him online and in the end, it saves us lives. (lots of cases of women coming home to our country inside "boxes" ... being abused and murdered by their online husbands/boyfriends).

I agree with you too a point. If its a serius crime sych as: murder, rape, attemeted murder, fraud, Ect... then yes you should be able to see it for free. But if its a minor charge like possesion from when they were a teen then i don't agree because everyone does stupid things when their younger and you shouldn't judge them by a minor charge that they got years and years ago. Only seruis crimes should be free.

I strongly believe that someone's criminal record should not be available to the public except perhaps for rapists and child molesters. Things on a person's criminal record that are the norm are that person's business, but rape and child molestation is useful for citizens to be aware of a potentially threatening person in neighborhoods. It's a great idea to think that if we know someone's history than it will make us safer but I think that's delusional thinking. Criminals can change and people with no criminal record can commit horrendous crimes.

I agree that people CAN change
but wouldnt you want to know if the girl you are dating has a history of domestic assault or something like that?

well i dont think it should be made public because it will pave way for discrimination based on his past also if the accused wants to change afterwards it will act as a braker in his new life(after all we all deserve 2nd chance).
