Airport shopping?!

Was anyone else shocked during their first flying experience to find out that air ports have so many shops in them? Nothing comes for free, of course, but all the same...When I flew to Chicago for the weekend, I noticed that in MSP (Minneapolis St. Paul Airport - where I left from), I noticed there weren't only food places like McDonalds and a few bakeries and restaurants, but also souvineer shps, and "upscale" retail shops too, like Hugo Boss! I didn't really get a chance to check any of them out due to scheduling conflicts, but I was suprirsed! Is the airport a good place to shop? Who actually goes clothes shopping at an airport? Do you think this is over-industrialization or is it actually cool and convenient? What do you think? And please feel free to describe the air ports you've been to and how they compare. Do only the larger ones have the shopping-mall type atmospheres? Or is it all of them? Is this weird, or what?

Large airports in developed countries like those in Europe and North America have excellent shops like in London and in Los Angeles. The duty free shopping can be worth doing in such places. Airports in developing countries like in Kenya have a row of stalls selling souvenirs. Tiny airports like French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Fiji don't have many shops. The best airport I have been to is Singapore. Wow!
