Craft Fairs... does anyone have a success story to share from a recent show?

I have done a few shows recently and I've found that the shows exceeded or met my expectations. That doesn't mean my expectations have not been reduced a bit because of the state of our economy, but I have been seeing signs that there are some people with disposable cash willing to buy items for themselves or have already begun shopping for the holidays. Has anyone else worked a show recently, or attended a show? Did it look like people were buying or just window shopping and if you were a show vendor, how did your sales compare to your expectations?

As you may or may not know, I am working for an herb company. No medium or large items are moving very well. But catnip, balsom, sweet annie, and lavendar items that are small and priced at $1 to $4 are moving right along according to the person I'm working for. She goes to craft sales and farmers' markets. I've been stuffing lots of small stuff for her. She's cutting out and sewing small items. I'm stuffing and she's sewing the items. She grows the catnip, balsom, sweet annie and lavendar herself. Due to the cold and nasty summer and fall, she said tea is going pretty well around here, too. I don't do anything with the teas, she does it all, but she did have me cut all her mint plants to bring in. She's pleased that things have picked up and the market/fair is extended into mid-October, normally ends at the end of September, but I saw the extention in the newspaper. I'm pleased, too. I get to work for her for longer.

You're welcome. Not to mention that when you know the crafter, that person can custom make things for you. She's making lots of draft stops for people. Different people have different width doors, so she's making them according to the sizes they give her. The draft stoppers will save money, fuel, electricity, etc. So she's really hoping for lots of sales there. Reminds me, I need to measure my doors and order. . ..

As Carolbee mentioned in the comment above, there are always people that will buy handmade items...and I've noticed that they are even more inclined to do when the economy turns sour. Little items, that can be used around the house, handmade clothing, scarves, even jewelry. It doesn't look like all the "other stuff" in the stores, and in many cases it is made better and with higher quality goods. I'm glad your work has been extended...hopefully, she will need you even longer than October. Thanks for sharing your views!

The blue sea glass with the dolphin on it is really, really cool. Very pretty, nice to have on your profile page.

It's been well over a year since I did a craft fair. The last one was good and I was very content. Because of my aging back, had to slow down and stop carrying a heavy suitcase full of my crafts and card table. All the ones I did were outside which meant we had to deal with the elements of the summer heat. I do think the economy has had an effect on spending but at the same time people are always willing to spend for the holidays and special days such as birthdays. The people I saw at a recent fair were spending. I did notice purchases even though I was simply a craft goer at the time and not a vendor.

There will always be people who love to buy handmade gifts. Sales may not soar through the roof but don't give up. This economy is sluggish now but things will change. Might take time but we will get there. Have to be positive. Happy sales, carolbee

I know what you mean about carrying all that heavy stuff! My jewelry basically fits into a little tote, but two large tables, all of my table display pieces, plus my tent for outdoor shows... I'm lucky my hubby is so willing to help out. It is good to hear that people are spending, even if they are already buying holiday gifts. Perhaps the time is now to load up my online store and bring some back-stock to my consignment shops to get in on the early-birds that are buying. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Well, it seems like when I go anywhere where people are selling their hand made crafts, it often depends on their price they are asking, and the type of item it is when you go there. I know lately things are tight so some people have reduced their prices a little to make up for it, but I have been noticing when it is an item someone really wants they will pay no matter what. But overall I think personally it does depend on the item etc. as to whether things are picking back up in areas or not.

Yes, this is true. People certainly are spending money frivolously right now (and that is a good thing). I was a little concerned that my jewelry would be an item that some would not be willing to spend money on for themselves...especially when there are so many vendors selling handmade clothing, scarves, soaps...things used and needed everyday. So far, I've been happily surprised, though at my recent sales, several sales were purchased as a gift...the same for a few of my recent online sales... I had to send the package to a 3rd party and include a note from the buyer. Thanks for responding!

I did one two weeks ago..and did okay. Not like in the spring when they had gotten their income tax returns but all the same I did just fine....so I can't complain. I do know that it was a three day show and two of the venders didn't sell one thing...but they had unusual items....one was soy candles and the other was the baby cakes made from disposable diapers....I do well because I sell many smaller items with my bigger ones like covered candies and greeting cards....I usually sell alot of both items.

I used to have the same plan for my table...smaller, less expensive items mixed in with more expensive items. That was before I switched to an all-sea glass display, so now I'm really selling to a niche market...but it works because I live in a beach area, so many people are familiar with sea glass. I think several of the vendors at the shows I did this weekend did okay...hopefully this bodes well for the rest of the holiday season. I only have a couple more shows scheduled, but I hope to add another 1 or 2. I also have a couple of shops I consign to, and I'm hoping those make up for my reduced number of shows. I'm glad you did okay, and hope the things pick up for you during the holiday season. Thanks for responding!

I have not done any shows this season yet. My first one is coming up this weekend. I am really expecting it to be better than last fall season for me. I have noticed my online sales increasing more than I expected the past few months.

I have to admit, my expectations were not nearly as high for my September shows, as they were for last year's fall shows. I didn't really have great online figures for August (but that seems to be the trend for me, decent June, good July, slower August)and with the economy still struggling I wasn't sure what to expect. My first show was better than I thought I'd have and a little more than 50% of the sales were paid for by credit card. The two shows I did this past weekend, were not bad...and once again people were purchasing with their credit cards. Several of the buyers asked for gift boxes. Good luck to you at your show this weekend, I hope the traffic for the show is great and you have a pile of cash to carry home Thanks for responding!

I would love to get into some craft shows but I don't have anything that I can sell. I need to get into something and then look into craft fairs because I do think that it is something I would really enjoy...I just hope I have the motivation. I think if I was able to get into something that I could create essentially and be able to sell a bit that I know my husband would definitely help me out on the traveling and carrying part....I just have to get into something and stick with it long enough to maybe make a little bit of money from.

I have been wanting to get into a show but have not really tried yet. I am thinking that my work isnt as good as some other people. But when I look at other peoples work I do find that mostly it is comparable. I guess I am still shy about it since I have not sold any yet. But craft shows I think tend to work a bit better where the sales of homemade jewelry is concerned.

I have not done any craft shows lately. I am glad you were able to exceed your goals. Hopefully people would spend more this holiday season.

I haven't been to a craft show in over a year - afraid my last few experiences were not good - didn't even make back my booth cost. I'm glad to hear that some are still doing ok though - I gave up on selling crafts for the time although I am trying to sell a few 'left-overs' online.
