Child's science project involves microwaving worms

I was reading a Failblog.org post not too terribly long ago. In it, there was a photo that showed a child's science project that involved microwaving worms in the microwave. Sick! It actually showed photos of a worm before and after the microwaving.
I know it's just a worm, but still! This child's mother or father or guardian allowed this child to put living worms in a microwave and blow them up. What kind of a sick creature allows their child to blow up living animals in the microwave? It doesn't matter if it was a worm or a baby, it's just sick and disgusting.
I'm a juvenile intake officer. I can't count the times I've arrested a child or a teen for rape or murder and the common factor was animal abuse. If this mom allowed her kid to blow up worms in the microwave, what's next?
I don't even want to consider it.
Please tell me I'm not insane in the fact that if my child wanted to blow up worms in the microwave for a science fair project, I'd get her head checked out by a psychologist.
What would you do?

Not a good project at all. Such things should be banned. It teaches kids to be cruel. It is not for school aged kids. If my child wants to do such a project, I would refuse it no matter what. Above all, in my kitchen such things will never be allowed.

that's terrible that a school asked the pupils to do this project and that the parents let them, everyone knows that a lot of sick twisted people started by torturing animals when they were younger,do these parents want to take the chance that their kids could turn into violent thugs or rapists
