So, we already have 2 cats and well we need to get things in order in with a new place and me start working again. But I would like to get 2 dogs actually. I want a chihua and my husband wants a german shephard. Like I said we have 2 cats ones a persian and the other is a tabby cat. Would these be okay with one another. Does anyone have any dogs and cats together as pets and I know that there may be times that they might get along. But I would like to know what other peoples opinions are like and experiences with having cats and dogs. Thanks.

I have had the both always. I do think it is easier if you get them both young and they grow up together..
They get used to each other better that way..
it's often hard to introduce new puppies to older cats, As they don't take to kindly to dogs usually.. If it's a gentle dog they may be won over eventually but if you have a crazy dog that is always terrorizing them it may take a long while, if ever, to work..
I don't know if it's easier to introduce Adult dogs to cats (if they weren't raised with them) or vice versa.. It depends on the breed of the dog, I think. I was lucky with the only dog that I adopted that was already an Adult ---it was a Collie..They are known for being gentle.. and he basically just doesn't care one way or the other about the cats.. the other dogs that were raised with them, play with them and interact but he ignores them.. You would have to be careful if you were to get a dog (breed) that is know for chasing prey.. i.e. Cats - like greyhounds and some terriers.. I think they would be a bit more difficult..
But they all CAN get a long.. take it from someone who knows.. I have 5 dogs and 15 cats in my house.. and there are more fights within each species than there are between the 2!

That is a great suggestion. I may just look into getting a dog that is used to being around cats or just getting a puppy. We've had our cat since she was only a few weeks old, I don't think she really came face to face with a dog. But I don't know because we found he when she was a stray. So, we'll have to see. More than anything she is a big scaredy cat and so it'll take some time I know to introduce her to a new member of the family such as a dog.

We have cats and dogs together, but we also have dogs that do not like cats. Fortunately, our dogs that do not like cats all have chosen to be outside dogs, and the ones that do like cats have chosen to be inside dogs, so it has worked out well for us. It is best to introduce them to each other gradually, in any case, and see how they interact. Sometimes, they may be wary of each other at first, but that does not necessarily mean that they will not get used to each other. It might just take some time to adjust. However, it is definitely best for you to be with them while they are adjusting to each other, so that nobody gets hurt.

Unfortunately, I have had quite a few distractions that have kept me off of myLot over the past few days. I have missed being on here and the interactions with my friends, and it is very nice to know that other people have been looking for me and have missed me as well. I have to admit that I have been neglecting things in my off-line life a bit with the amount of time that I have been on here the past few weeks, so I have to find a better balance between here and my personal responsibilities that will allow me to still be on here and have fun but also do what I need to do off-line as well.

We have a cat and dog, and they don't get along that well. We had the cat at first, and she was two years old when we got the dog. He is still a puppy and he is very interested in the cat. He keeps chasing her around the house. She has a couple of places where he can't reach her, and she usually hides there, if he can't leave her alone. When the dog gets too close the cat tries to hit him, and he got really scared in the beginning, but they don't fight as much as they used to, so the situation has improved.

Aw, yeah I have heard its alot harder to introduce a adult cat to a dog/puppy. Its better to get them when they are kittens and puppies together. Our cat is still young, so we are still looking for a dog and looking to maybe get a puppy. I don't know though we are kind of worried because she is timid around new people and animals so it may take some time to get her used to having a dog around the house.

for now we have cats.when I was younger we used to have dogs and cats.they don't really fight.they know each other since they live in the same household.they don't get territorial and leave each other alone most of the time.when the dogs are in the mood the play, they annoy the cat and play fight with them.

That is cool, I hope that when we do decide to get a dog, not sure when that will happen, but that they will be the same way and not fight. Alot of people have been saying it'll be easier when they are younger and our cat is still a kitten so, we are still thinking of getting a dog and thinking of possibly getting it as a puppy maybe around the same age. She is like 8 months now. We'll have to see though.

I have a 3 year old dog, and a 7 month old kitten, they do GREAT together, but that is only because i brought my kitten in when he was 8 weeks old, so he got to grow up with my dog. It is a lot harder bringing a dog into a cat's home. that cat is thinking 'this is my place, leave now!' lol, as a dog is sayin 'all is welcome' lol or thats the case with my dog lol however where my boyfriend has cats, when i bring my dog over his place, they hate her, so it may take a while getting the cats use to the dogs.

Aw, yeah I do see that cats become very territorial with their homes and their owners. We are still in the search of maybe getting a dog. Our cat is still young, so we are thinking that if maybe we get a dog we'll get it as a puppy so that they can kind of grow up together. Maybe the same age or something.

I have a dog hes a yorkie-poo 3 years old now and i have a orange tabby cat that is about 9 1/2 months and then i have a black cat not sure what kind he is as he was a stray kitten and he was sick i had to nurse him back to health. he is now 2 years old. Now i had the dog first from a puppy then we got the black cat and the dog was very friendly with him the cat was so tiny but when they got older they were fine no hissing at all. well i got my tabby cat @ a month old some kids had took it away from its mother and she couldn't be found so i keep him and my black cat hissed 1 time at it i had to actually pet both of them at the same time the dog was fine just curious but yet in still had to pet him too to let everyone know hes a new baby and hes OK to play with. but i think as long as you get them all together at different times and pet them all it should be OK as long as they see each other and they know all are getting equal attention they should be fine. i would say at night separate the ones that you think may get into trouble together :) just so no one gets hurt until they are fully used to each other.

I have had cats and dogs together . It works best when you get them both at a young age and they grow up together. Older animals may or may not adapt, but young ones almost always do.

I figured that may work. Well, I have one older cat and one younger one that's still a kitten. So, my husband and I are moving and we are thinking we may need a dog and I have told him about maybe getting a puppy, so the kitten can have someone to play with. So that may work, thanks. We'll definitely look into getting a puppy.

I have cats and dogs. I also have friends bring their dog over. My cats love dogs and my friends dogs are cat friendly. You can easily have them together as long as the dogs know the cats are boss.

I had cats and dogs growing up, and my grandparents had cats and dogs. As long as you get the dog as a puppy and let it interact with the cats from the beginning you shouldn't have any problems.
With me and my grandparents, the dogs mostly left the cats alone. Sometimes the dogs would get curious about the cats and start sniffing at them, which would annoy the cats, but we never had any problems with the dogs hurting the cats.

I have a cat at home as my favorite pet and i don't have dog at home.In some places i have seen dog and a cat kept together by the same house owner. They never quarrel but instead they remain happily understanding to each other.
