We have the same common problem friend but I did was I tried to purchased the e-card English Proficiency here in my place and studied it. I looked up the sites in the internet with connections to english studies and always listening to English movie.True it was hard to follow their speed of speaking or to catch up their thought and language while their are speaking. So let us try to continue learning. We can do it.

One easy and entertaining way to improve your listening skills in English is to watch English movies, television programs, news etc. It is very helpful to constantly listen to English communicators interact, that way you improve your listening skills. As you do it oftentimes, you get familiar with the words and its sounds.

I'm also encountered that problem too because I'm not a native English speaker even if all of us here in the Philippines understand and speak English but some can't speak fluently like me. I had a hard time expressing myself sometimes in writing like here in mylot I need to bring my dictionary with me to be able to translate some words in English. I watch English movies, shows and news so that my vocabulary would be improve. I agree that sometimes it is hard to understand the accent of American and the hardest is the British accent.

Dear Liujuanxh,
linguists say that the best way to learn a foreing language is to use it for doing something else, so that your focus is not on the language itself. The best thing is to use the language for something you like. As many have already suggested, watching movies, dramas, tv shows, listening to music or audio books, audio lessons from english-teaching sites etc. The more you like it, the better.
If you don't understand everything it doesn't matter, the most important is to get used to the sound, at the beginning.
I use this technoque while learning Chinese, and I must say it works well. I actually listen to chinese speaking dramas that often have subtitles, and I switch to all Chinese only if there is no translation.
Good luck with yout learning.

Hi, there. I've read your topic and all the comments. I's so glad that there are so many kind foreign people responsing this topic and releasing so much help here. I have not good lisening skills too, just like you. And i'm confused too, i've watched many holywood movies and seasons of episodes, but still, i can't flow the speakers very well. But i think i'm improving, and i'll keep doing this.
Another advice, i think the on-line radio show named CRI english is a good one to improve our english skills. By the way, the CRI english radio program is a english learning show for both English learners and Chinese learners, and the program is hosted by China Radio International.

The best thing I vote for is watching English channels a lot. English pictures as well. I am telling you this out of experience because I improved my English by seeing English movies and I am happy that they helped me in two ways. I enjoyed the movies as well improved my language.
It would be difficult to follow them at first so my advise is use subtitles first so you can understand and gradually you will be able to pick the language and accent.
All the best

Since listening is the main challenge, I assume you don't have any difficulty reading of speaking, you must contue to listen to english people speaking. Either to a news broadcast, tv programs, audio teaching materials. A perfect comprehension doesn't happen overnight, so just be patient. Turn on the radio broadcasting english or watch a movie.
You may not be able to pick up everything but slowly, your comprehension improves.
Have a nice day.

Hi liujuanxh,
Have you considered listening to the news stations whether on TV or radio?
I suggest BBC (British English) or CNN (American English). If they are too much to handle, perhaps any of the local English stations would be a good start before you "advance".
Good luck!

I have a problem speaking in English, I don't know if my grammar is correct or not. but listening to them is much better for me, I practice that with movies. like for example watching a DVD movie, turning the subtitle off so I can hear and listen to them more. I used to watch movie with the subtitle ON so I know what they're saying but unfortunately it doesn't help me improve anything.
Hope this might help you ^_~ Happy mylotting

There are several ways for you to improve your English listening :

By practising English everyday with people around you, it will helps to improve your speaking and listening towards English language.

Hi! I think it could help if you make it a point to allocate your time on listening to english tv news, programs or series so that you could accustomed yourself on the english sounds, its pacing, its delivery and sometimes its conotation. With daily exposure to it you could catch up easily with english conversation.

The best thing to improve your listening skill is listen English song, and then transcript it first before you search the lyric. The second one is watch English movie without the translation text. Trust me, it will improve your listening skill. By those ways, you will familiar with English sounds.

Hi there! I am not a native English speaker but I can speak English too. My advice for you is to watch movies, read magazines in English, read English articles on the internet. But I think the best thing that you can do is practice talking with a good English speaker. Like you can talk on the internet with a friend who can talk well. Or maybe you can have tutorials.

One way to learn would be by listening to English Channels and English movies. These could help you familiarize with english language. You can also get a native speaker to teach you. For me, I've started with reading. I've lots of English books. I familiarized myself with English words. I did my best to understand them first. I suggest read read read then try pronouncing these words. Hope this will help.
