Would You Like To Indulge And Drink The Most Expensive Coffee In The World?

I was listening to this story last night on the news about the most expensive cup of coffee around in the world and it's popularity is widely growing. How expensive is this coffee? Well in Australia, a single cup of coffee is $40.00...that's right, $40.00 a cup. And you thought Starbucks was expensive. It's being toted as the Dom Perignon of coffees and the taste has been described as a hint of chocolate, caramel and "earthy". The coffee is known as Kopi Luak, and is "harvested" in the islands of Java, Sumatra, Bali and Indonesia. And what pray tell does Kopi Luak mean? The term translates as "Civet Coffee" which is the rather "nice" term for it. Do you know why it's called this? The civet cat of those countries ingests the coffee berries, and the seeds or coffee beans come out in it's feces. Workers then search for the civet dung and sort out the beans, where it's later cleaned and roasted. In other words this coffee is actually known as cat poo coffee. You can read an article about it here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,273237,00.html There's even a Youtube video of a man in Michigan who sells this coffee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B141ogkpPb8 Well folks I don't know about you. I do love coffee, the aroma, the taste, but I think I'll stick to my Maxwell House. Would you ever drink this cat poo coffee?

Yes, I've heard about it. No, I can't see myself paying for it. If somebody else did, I might think about it...

Thanks but I'll pass......actually I quit drinking coffee for the most part....once in a great while I will have a cup but now I find it irritates my tummy.....go figure. I used to drink it all day long! But this one they would have to pay me to drink!

Oh, so that's where they got the saying "That tastes like $hit!", haaahaha! No Thank You, I will definitely pass on that one. And someone else can drink what the cats passed. And for $40.00!, I could eat for two weeks on that. No cat poo coffee for me.

I've read about this coffee too, Pye - intriguing, isn't it? Just shows, you should be careful what you eat or drink ... you never know where it's been (bean?)!

I've heard of this coffee a couple years ago, and then it was used as a plot point in the movie, The Bucket List.

What a riot, pyewacket....just saw this article on a recent TV Show, "Steven & Chris" on CBC....and I nearly spewed the cup of coffee that I was drinking, everywhere. THANKS.....BUT NO THANKS! I can't imagine...and where do health regulations come in..and who knows, I could be sold a pound of Rabbit, Chicken sh!te, and never know the difference! Course, I guess I really don't know what's in my Folgers, Nabob or Maxwell House, either....but my mind tells me it's palatable! Have a great weekend....it's getting cold here! Cheers!

Got a great point...there must be some kind of health regulations about this--we get enough e. coli contaminated food here in the US without coffee maybe being contaminated...ewwwwww

Hiya Pye, this is such awesome news. I didn't know before that there's such a thing as the existence of expensive coffee. I would say $40 is a bit much for a cup, but if I could try it at least one time and find out what all the taste is about, then I can say I wasted my 40 bucks on a cup of coffee! LOL. The taste of caramel, chocolate and earthy sounds totally delicious to me. The owner don't need a lot of customers to pay off the rent, I suppose. Imagine 10 customers ordering the cups of coffee already amount to $400.

Cat poo coffee? I have a lot of cat poo at my house! (LOL). I am a lover of good coffee and always willing to try something new but this I will pass on and keep my $40 for some jars of good Nescafe Gold. Who on earth ever decided to make coffee out of these ‘beans’ that are to be found in animal faeces? Someone must have been the first to try it. I haven’t seen any in Western Australia yet but no, thanks anyway...

I have my own cat poo myself...hey I have an idea. Maybe we should get our kitties to eat the coffee berries then "harvest" their poo for the beans...maybe we could become millionaires this way I could call it PyePoo Coffee

I wouldn't mind drinking this coffee everyday, as long as someone else is paying. Otherwise I just keep to my instant coffee. I dont see why I have to pay so much for coffee when it has no value whatsoever, other than to keep me alert for a few hours, and enjoy the aroma for a few minutes. I dont even want to drink coffee in Starbucks regularly. One cup of coffee in Starbucks is more expensive than a meal.

Maybe it's just plain "snob" appeal....like why pay over $300.00 for a bottle of champagne (dom Perignon) when a bottle going for $10.00 can taste just as good, right?

hi pyewacket I think I willjust take folgers myself'and let someone else drink cat poo coffee,it sounds really a bit gross to me. I think the idea of how it is made would turn my stomach even if the ready made coffee smelled good. The idea of civet cat poo is really a bit much. yuck.

Well I personally am not a big fan of a coffee but if I loved coffee and I had an extra forty dollars to spare I would definitely contemplate buying that cup of coffee to see if it's really worth it being the most expensive cup of coffee in the world. My girlfriend is a huge fan of coffee and she is a barista in a locally owned coffee shop. I wouldn't mind buying her a forty dollar cup of coffee as long as it was good and she liked it. Of course price isn't everything and this coffee might not even be better then Folgers or something like that.

Yes price isn't everything...just because it's "expensive" doesn't mean it's any better. My mother (who was a bit of a snob...LOL) used to get Joy perfume...the most expensive perfume in the world...and you know what? I thought it stunk to high heaven!

Hi pyewacket, this is a confusing one really as I am so tempted to try this of course but only if a total stranger was paying for it. The dangers are plenty, I might like it so much I'd be craving it all the time but would never dream of paying such a ludicrous amount when a cup of the local brew is one euro. And if someone I knew paid for it for me I would have to question their sanity at the waste of $40 which would pay for 20 packets of the local brew to have at home. But I adore good coffee and it really wouldn't put off that it was produced in a rather odd way, after all I do enjoy raw tripe with vinegar.

Wow...I don't think I would pay 40 bucks for a cup of coffee! I wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks for a cup of coffee and that is STILL pricey! I would just go through McDonald's and get a cup for about 2 bucks. They have the best coffee anyways! lol
