If you guys do not know about the earthquake, here is the url:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/indonesia/6248217/Up-to-1000-killed-and-more-trapped-by-earthquake-in-Indonesias-Sumatra.html
I was sitting on the chair doing work, on the PC, while lotting too. And then I felt the chair vibrating; a tiny tremor. It was kind of scary, because I felt slightly dizzy. Just a slight. This happened around 10 ish in the morning, Sg time.
I thought must be the morning buzz for me again; I tend to imagine things when I'm too tired and sleepy. But no, another person also felt it and thought I had thrown something at her. I said of course not, I was rooted doing my work. My heart went out to all families of victims of the tragedy in West Sumatra.
Have you guys ever felt tremors? Do share your encounters/experiences. Thanks a lot. Do take care all.

hi zed,
yes, i've experienced tremors several times. we had fair share of earthquakes in our country and eversince i was a kid a already experience tremors from eartquakes. my parents taught me a prayer that i need to say everytime i experience this and this really calms me down. very scary and you will really dizzy because of the movement of the area where you are sitting, standing, lying down or whatver position you are in.

Several times? If it were me, I would chant different prayers too, I can totally relate to what you felt there, but you have had the experience several times some-more; how you must have felt. Yes, there tends to be a certain kind of dizziness for sure. Must stay in one position until the tremors stop. Thanks for taking the time to respond, msfrancisco.

I've been hearing about the earthquake activity in your area of the world and how it triggered tsunamis. I have a feeling there probably will be more earthquake activity unfortunately since it usually doesn't stop at one quake...hope you're all okay there.
Well I was born in California..need I say more? LOL. I was only a baby there and there and my mother told me there were tremors almost on a daily basis but no major quakes. Okay now zoom up many years...my mother and I moved to NY to her grandmother's and mother's home...then my grandmother, mother and I moved out from there into another neighborhood not far away in 1961----Now it's around 1983 and about 3 in the morning, when all three of us were literally shaken out of our beds...my grandmother was in a panic but not my mother nor me...my mother sleepily said "Oh must be an earthquake" and went back to sleep and so did I...didn't scare me in the least....Do you think it had something to do with being a baby growing up in California and being rocked by tremors all the time? Gee, gives a new meaning to being "rocked" in the cradle, no?

LOL. You made me smile with your answer here. In fact, I chuckled along the lines of rocked in the cradle. Whole new meaning totally..
Thanks for sharing your experience with the quakes and all. Literally shaken out of the beds would be pretty scary for me. I can only imagine what if the roof crumble down and all; I can have a pretty wild imagination. Hope you and your family will always be safe.

Oh, that is devastating.
We have a lot of earthquakes where I live, but the buildings withstand them better here than in some places, I guess because they are expected. The biggest quake I have ever been in was 1989 and it was 6.9. My husband had just gotten safely past the below stretch of freeway when this happened:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cypress_structure.jpeg
I think there must have a little one hereabouts recently during the night while I was asleep because when I looked in the cupboard today all the cans I had neatly stacked one on another were every which way. The last quake I was home and awake for at this location was a couple months ago. I usually make a report to the "Did you feel it" section here when that happens:

Thanks for the url; I'm opening them on other tabs. 1989, and measuring 6.9? Whoa!! That's a real strong one there, I must say. Luckily you and your husband was safe. Thanks for sharing these links, drannhh. There's nothing we can do but to pray and keep ourselves as securely safe as possible.

I live in denver, co, usa. Since i moved here i would feel something very slight. Not knowing if it was me or not. I never mentioned it to anyone. This was going on till a couple years ago. I was looking at something on the internet about hurricanes and ended up also looking at a earthquake site. To my surprize i saw that the areas they had where quakes had been felt along the front range of the rocky mountians. Very close to where i now live. What a releaf that was because i actually thought i was suffering from something. Like i said its hardly noticable. When i felt it i actually had to stop what i was doing to really feel it. Thats how slight it is. Its just nice knowing my ticker isnt sick.

I must say I felt a very small shake for just 6 seconds on 21st of last month. I was visiting an aunty who stays on the fourth floor of my building and we were all at the dining table when we felt the shake...I thought it was because I was shaking my leg, the table also seemed to shake...but then immediately everyone rubbished that it couldnt be an earthquake...minutes later there was flash news on tv that somewhere in the indian ocean a massive earthquake happened...A few months back, our building shook severly for more than 3 minutes in the middle of the night, I was in very deep sleep to know it though!!!

Well, I have been in one Earthquake that I can really remember and that is the one here in the Seattle, WA USA area back in Feb, 2001. I can still remember the scary thought of being in Bed asleep and being woke up to the bed moving and hearing my shelves moving etc. and hearing a few things falling off. I did have one of my Porcelain dolls hands break but nothing else. Just a feeling like I never really want to feel again, and my thoughts and Prayers are with those who recently got effected from these quakes as well.

scray and you're so helpless that only prayer will be your weapon aside from trying to calm down and wish that you'll be safe and out of the building where you are trap a sooooon or maybe ther rescue can easily track you.
you;re so lucky for not experiencing anything like this.

Hey Zed, Im really sorry for the earth quake victims. I feel moved and also scared while watching it online now. I don't have any earth quake tremors or any such experiences and thank God for that. Seems like the whole world is going form bad to worse and only God can make things right. I m pretty sure if something like that happens with me, i would b pretty sacred....Im glad you are okay....Take care...

I have never felt a tremor and I hope I never do. I feel so badly for the families who lost their loved ones, it must be a horrible way to die. I always donate to the legitimate charities that help the survivors of such disasters--it's not much to help, but it's all I can do from so far away.

I do feel responsible in that sense too; to donate whenever and wherever I can. I'm sure there are always funds needed to repair all the damaged properties and stuff. If everyone could contribute, then the repairs would take into place. My heart went out to all victims and their families as well..

Yeah I've felt tremors on countless occasions. At one time I was relaxed on the sofa playing video games and it came. It almost gave me a heart attack. Another time I was walking through the town central. And the earthquake struck and glass fell from a tall building nearby. That was really terrifying. I wonder how it fields to be in the middle of a huge one. Not nice. It is really a sad thing for people to die from these kind of disasters. Life is so fragile.

Hi zed, don't realize it's you when opening the topic since you changed avatar...Well, I'm at Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and not felt any tremor..I felt deepenedly sad seeing in local news of the casualties (now it's amounted 400 people and I predicted can reach up to a thousand looking at the damages)and damages caused by it. I felt like tsunami happened again, buildings teared down, road infrastructure ruined, fire in some areas, and people are too scared to stay under the roof. Let's hope Indonesia government can act quickly to manage this problem. There's a lot of disastrous nature events happens during his preidency, hopefully he is capable to handle this one.
Actually, just a month ago, an earthquake also happened in Jakarta. My office is at 6th floor, and people just flew off the building using emergency stairs. I just knew after that happened, the best way to avoid injury is staying under your table...

Hiya bro, glad to see you here. Yes, it's the same old me..
I heard about the earthquake that happened in Jakarta too; Your office is on the 6th floor? Oh my! That would be so scary should everyone just decide to come down; would be a massive tumbling down. Luckily you were safe. These tremors can be kind of a suspense; and the shaking of tables, chairs and whatnot. Although I felt the tremor like a few seconds, it made my mind running wild. I really hope those trapped victims would be found soon. My heart is tearing inside; natural disasters are like there as and when and could strike at anytime and anywhere too. Thanks for your time..

hi zed^^;;
July 16,1990 is the day of horror when an earthquake of a 7.8 intensity hit my city and left a catastrophic destruction leaving hundreds of families on streets including mine because we used to live in the 5th floor of an apartment. though our apartment didn't collapsed but we still need to be cautious. we had to build tents on the ground and live there in almost a month since we could still feel some shakes. but grounds were also unsafe because it could suddenly open and swallow us alive so each day of our lives were in danger.
Thank God we were able to survive.
i will never forget that and will never like to experience it again. but we still experience some tremors and always worry that the said experience will reoccur..i pray not

I've heard of 6.4, 6.8 but 7.8 intensity? Oh my God... that's really hugely scary! What an experience you and your family plus the others had to go through. I would feel so insecure to live in tents not knowing when I could go home again. I agree that the grounds might appear very unsafe. The fear you guys must have felt; totally sad. Hope it will never, ever happen again. Thanks for sharing your experience, Lucky.

Are u referring to today this morning?? Because there are also tremors felt in CBD area yesterday afternoon too, from west sumatra as well!!
THe only time i have experience a tremor, was about 10 years ago, at home, while sleeping.. I remember the whole floor shaking for a while before stopping.. Initially i thought i was just dreaming or in the state of dozing off, but it's not.. As i clearly heard my parents bed shifting as well..
When i wake up the next day, my parents told me there's a tremor felt last night, and thus i came to know about it.. hehe

hi zed hatley here oh yes I have been in Ca US for years and have felt a lot of tremors but was fortunate to have them only three s and fours. one five scared the bejabbers out of me, but we have been so lucky. my heart and prayers go out to the families of the victims in West Sumatra. I have just a small taste of how frightening that must have been. i have had books topple and things fall down but no major damage. I live far enough away from LA that I didnt feel anything much with the Northridge quake a few years back.

Thanks, tamara. I'm all safe now; it was a real wonder of that few seconds moment, but so far, Singapore has only felt tremors and I'm thankful nothing more worst has happened. I'm so sad with what was happening in terms of the flood too. How they must have felt; could be pretty bad. I hope everything turns out fine eventually and these natural disasters would be over quick.

Hi Zed, terrible news when they actually hit.
I'm in an earthquake zone here but the last big one to hit was a few decades ago now and destroyed much of the town an hour away. For now though we get regualr tremors which for some reason I don't notice, except once. I was washing up and suddenly felt a little dizzy with a slight sway but only after realised what it was. The most bizarre one was one evening in the taverna. One half of the room felt tremors and the other half didn't. All I noticed was that suddenly all the ceiling lights started waving around manically and the other half of the room started shouting about eathquakes.
They are often reported though and one on the opposite peninsular caused our school to close because of suspected danger.

You have had the experience more scarier! I can only imagine when you said the ceiling lights started waving around manically. Oh my! How that must have been. One can never seem to run from earthquakes and if it happens, it happens. That's the real deal. No solution to it; total terrible news each time it happens near to my region or other faraway countries. Thanks for dropping by, Thea..

I live in an earthquake country: Chile. Chile has the record of the worst catastrophe ever recorded, around the 60s. The earth changed forever in the south of Chile and part of cities are up to now under the sea level.
I am terrified by earthquakes although they don´t make too much harm here because we know how to buid in earthqhake country. But I have a 2 story house and my bedroom is downstairs, with a door to run out as soon as I feel the littlest quake. I have experienced big ones. The last big one was around the 80s (probably 1985) so I suppose there should be a big one coming soon.
I try to be rational but I can´t. I am not afraid of wind or hail. Just earthquakes.

Chile has the worst catastrophe ever recorded in the 60s? I didn't know that; thanks for telling me. You had experienced the big ones? I can only imagine how you must have felt. Earthquakes are so natural, but yet so inevitable. That's like one of the biggest disasters that I dislike about Mother Nature. Thanks for dropping by this discussion, marguicha and take care, aite..
