What's the deal with no White after labour day?

Okay, I get the no white pants or shoes while it is raining, but does that also mean no white t shirts after labor day? What about coats? Does anyone know the etimology of this rule (when and where it came about) ?
Would love to hear your comments and thoughts on the matter. :P
