what are the best ways to help others in time of calamities?

When in time of calamities like floods, tsunami, earthquake etc. What should be the best way to help the victims specially the children?. Prayers for me can do a lot. Maybe giving of relief goods will do also but are these the best way? Can you think of any other ways?
