Normally, if a gadget works well I do not exchange it as long as it works smoothly without too mnay repairs. Now what do you do?Do you persist faithfully with your old gadget, maintaining it and repairing it?Do you throw it away impatiently at the slightest pretext and buy a new one when there is a slight problem?

Hi Kalav56, When old gadget gives out on me, I do try to fix it beause I am so used to it but in the end I just have to get a new one, I hate spe4nding money on something if I can fix it, I suppose I am a bit old fashion. Tamara

I am also like you Tamara and the thought that crossed my mind just now ,while I was reading through the responses was that many of us think the same way.Other friends also seem to share our old fashioned ideas. There are people who dump their things and buy a new on.It is a subjective decision but I too feel that when something works well there is no point in throwing it just because there is a new model. For me, fixing it is a difficult thing and I TRY AND get some shop nearby where I can get it done. Thanks for the participation.

When a gadget keeps breaking down I will just dump it and get a new one. Keeping it for long will only incur heavy maintenance. Buying spare parts and labor charges is enough to burn the pocket. So once and for all it is better to replace it and save all the trouble of repair works which doesn't guarantee that it will work well. All gadgets have a maximum life span and once they have 'hiccups' it is a sign that they need to be replaced.

i will still fix that if i can or bring it to someone who can fix for me. if there's nothing that can be done then that's the time that i will dispose stuffs. i observe that repair and maintenance are much higher than its original cost.that's where i hate it so i'd rather buy a new one.

Very true .hy spend on repair and maintenance when the amount spent ca give us a new gadget? THe new one at least is likely to wrok smoothlly for alonger period from the date of purchase than repairing the old one.THanks for the participation.

hi kalav65 when we had our own apartment I never threw'out an appliance that was still working, why do that if its okay and you can still use it. I was brought up on use it up, wear it out, makeit do, or do without. That was during the first depression'and we had to be so careful.

Nope, I dont buy new stuff unless its absolutely necessary. If my gadgets are starting to show signs of issues, if the issue can still be resolved cheaply by seeking the repair shop services then I go that route. But when the cost of the repair is already equal to the value of a brand new gadget or even a secondhand one, then Ill just use the gadget with the slight problem until it really is not functional anymore. That's the time that Ill buy a new one. I have the same principle with most of my things including clothes and shoes. I use them to the very end of their capabilities and all the repairs and maintenance if its within a reasonable price. I guess one would just weigh the pros and cons in keeping the item with repairs against buying a new one. I would decide on the one option that would be more favorable to me.^_^

Hi Kalav, I'm just thinking of trading in my laptop for a newer version when I see your discussion. I have this laptop for four years, and it's been working rather well. I had a bit of problem with the keyboard a few weeks ago. Fortunately I signed up for extended warranty, and the company replaced the keyboard free of charge. The five years warranty will end next year. I guess I have to trade-in the old laptop for new one. That is a better option, rather than waiting till the laptop fails totally. As long as it's in good working condition, I have no doubt I can get a better offer for trading in. I will definitely sign up for extended warranty. Computer and laptop seldom give problem in the first year. It will definitely produces problem within five years.

It makes sense to exchange it when it IS functioning well.Recently, I took up an exchange offer for my mixie/grinder and this was what prompted this discussion. My desptop is also 3 years old and it has started giving trouble.THree months back it had crashed and once agin few days back it did the same thing. It suddely refuses to work and I intend upgrading the RAM.What, do you think, is the lifespan of a desktop Scheng?

I think the warranty is for 5 years. My desktop is 3 years old. But, it is not easy to exchange it.I am just planning to upgrade the RAM and then work with it for as long as it is possible.Only today a new person came and examined it.Hope and pray that this computer doctor is lucky and gives it a long lease of life . I intend buying the RAM from his shop.

Hi Kalav, it's unusual for a laptop to last longer than a desktop. Most desk tops in office envirnoment last longer than three years without any problem. And the office folks are using them for so many hours in a day. How long is the warranty for the desktop? Maybe you can consider trade-in the desktop for a new one, and remember to ask for extended warranty. I managed to get five years for my laptop. Hope you can get at least four years. The extra money is well-spent.

Hi Kala! We belong to old school of thoughts and we prefer to get the old gadgets repaired, as long as it is feasible. When we find that the gadgets have become irrepairable, then we go for new one. We just cannot afford to throw away somewhat defective gadgets for the sake of buying a new one. Moroever, new gadgets come with latest technology, yet they are not long lasting and durable. when we finally buy a new one, we dispose of the older one, instead of dumping it in store.

It is sensiblLe to get rid of the old one instead of keeping it at home in one corner, allowing it to gather dust.Right now this is the problem wiht my old computer Deepak. It was a abranded one , paid some 37ooo for it in 2003 and it conkedoff immediately. The dealer absconded and we could do nothing .The company was Zenith. In 2005 we activated it by spending some money and using it for BROADBAND.It worked for a few months but on transit gave way..After coming to Mumbai I tried repairing it and once agin it gave way.THne we bought anew one. Now I am planning to dump it with the kabadiwalah. No computer person is willing to take it though the parts inside are new.Obviously this would not fit the new models. Cutting short the story,I agree with your statement thAT old ones are very durable. And once this repair becomes difficult then it makes sense ti throw it away.

Hi Kala! It really sounds very bad that you spent your hard money on branded computer and it did not last long and conked of. We really feels helpless sometimes in front of these kind of gadgets, where we just cannot get it to function flawlessly. I know that no one gets interested in buying an old computer and it is also difficult to dump it anywhere. If you keep it in your home, it unnecessarily occupies your space. I also hold the same view if getting a gadget like computer repaired becomes an expensive affair, it would be wiser to go for a new one.

That depends on the gadget. This morning I spent an hour and a half fixing a plumbing connection. I probably could have gotten it done faster by going to the store and buying new parts, but it was a connector for an old appliance that has served me faithfully and well for many years and I wanted to make the original parts work. I also have a spare laptop computer that types funny on its keyboard, but works fine with a cheap external one. That is a keeper, too, although I know some people who would just toss the whole thing. Where I usually draw the line is if I cannot fix something myself. Then instead of taking it to a repair depot I probably would just buy a new one. Usually the labor and parts cost more than something new and then, too, the new gadget often has better features.

I too feel sentimental about gadgets that have worked faithful to me.I had a mixie/grinder ,a sweet faithful one which stayed with me for 15 years, working silently and smoothly wihtout much noise. I was very sad parting with it recently because it did not work and there was an exchange offer. When I took it to the shop it started working. But, because there is an exchange offer and this was the second instance that the mixie had started giving me some small trouble[ I exchanged it for a new one [of the same brand].Like what you had pointed out, when the the labor and parts cost more than the new one, it does make sense to exchange it.for that excellent response.

I have some of the oldest gadgets ever because I always try over and over to fix them before running out to buy something new. Like the laptop I'm typing on now, took me a few months to figure out how to fix it, but now it works just fine and I'm glad I didn't go out and spend the money on something new. If it's something I can't fix myself, then maybe I'll get something new.

It does depend on the gadget. If it works fine and does its job well for me I usually keep on using it; I’m not a person who has to have the latest model of something just for the sake of it. Sometimes updating an item causes more trouble than what it’s worth; it’s like that with software; it works perfectly, you update it and problems occur all over the place! The only thing that I would consider updating for the sake of being extravagant is my laptop. Although I have a fairly new one that works very well, I can’t help but be tempted by all the new ones that come out every five minutes!

I never knew that updating software would bring problems of a different kind Paula.Probably you work a lot on the laptop[what is the nature of your job apart from wriitng?]and thta is why you have this desire to keep updating it.THanks for the participation.

Normally I also do not buy till the product is giving service. If there some problem arises I try to fix it with mechanics or by myself. But if it is gone beyond the limit then there is no way except buying a new one. I also watch for any company's buy back offer.

Normally I use any gadget until it is performing smoothly without the need for any repairs. If the cost of repairing it is costing a significant percentage of the product value itself then i rather buy a new product.

I always prefer to mend the old ones and keep them as I do not own anything much old. And as I am good at handling things safe and careful I do not have much problem with those gadgets.Well, if they give much trouble I may change them. But so far I have not changed any gadgets because of their giving problem.I just sell the gadgets if they become outdated and buy the latest ones.

Same for me...If a gadget works well, I will keep it until it does work anymore. When it stops working, I will buy a new one depending on if I have the money. If I don't have the money for it, I do without!

THat is a prudent way of actiing-when we have no money it si better to do without it.I too never look at things that would be above my reach.I would not even stretch myself and would do without it.
7 Oct 09
As long as the gadget works I would carry on with it .Of course I never allow any one to handle it .So my gadgets are there for a long span of time .But there are people who argue that after certain years you should change the electical gadgets. They argue that after a certain span of time they tend to wear and tear .But I do not agree with this notion.

you know what? i make do with everything as long as i possibley can these days. just dont have the money to buy a lot of things. id love to have my own big screen tv but i have this little one in my room that son gave me 5 yrs ago and it still looks great except the screen is only 19 inches. if i watch a movie i go into the front room and watch sons giant fancy tv he went into debt for. my dvd was not working right for a long time and he gave me his nice one and i chose to leave it in the front room to watch with the tv. so i make due as long as possible

Buying new stuff is quite unpractical, especially if you know that the damage could be fixed. Since the prices of goods in the market were soaring high, i guess the best option is to find a reputable and reliable person who can fix it well. But if the damage is huge, it's much better to buy a new one than spend your money every time you'll encounter a problem with it.

True .THat is a sensible course of action. If repair costs are to be higher than a new one, why persist with the old one?Thabks for the response.
