This is slightly indelicate. But what do you do with your smalls when they have finished their useful life. My mother used to cut my Dad's underpants up and use them for dusters. I'm not so hard up that I feel the need personally. I don't think that the local clothes bank would want them, and just throwing them out seems wasteful. I have been told that you can compost them, but presumably they have to be ripped into tiny pieces first. So just what do we do with them?

Early on in our marriage I used my husband's old underwear as dust cloths. He did not like that though, he said he felt uncomfortable about that, although I don't know why I didn't used them in front of anyone or anything like that. But because it made him uncomfortable I stopped doing it. We usually wear them until they are pretty worn, then I just throw them away. I can't really think of anything else that would be good to use them for.

When my panties are all done in and worn beyond use, I use them to stuff dog toys. Since they're silk or nylon they're no good for dusting but they make great stuffing. Sounds odd, I know, but it's so much better than throwing them out. I have to make Gus' toys myself since he loves to play tug and he is so strong that he tears up most commercial toys very quickly.

What a great idea! That is until your dog tears the toy open, hopefully not while company is there.
I'd consider cutting them into strips and crocheting with them, that would only work with men's underwear though, not enough material in women's underguchies.
Really though, if they are bad enough to not wear anymore, I'd just throw them away. My husband's T shirts are better for dusting and cleaning around the house, although, I'm cutting them into strips to crochet with. My mind is always on crochet.

hi pikey yes my mom also did that, and well do I remember
she even washed the darn things. As for me I do what my'husbnad used to call file 13. dump them into the garbage. Now here I have to laugh as I had some old worn out panties, and tossed them in my trash can. The care giver who was cleaning my room came over to me here at my computer, holding up the worn out undies and asked me " are you sure you want to throw these away?" I nodded my head and almost said, well if you want them, take them, but I did not being that I am pretty darned plump and she may have weighed at the most about 100 lbs,and I will not say soaking wet either, and they would have fallen off of her.So she did take them away, looking puzzled all the way out the door. What on earth did she expect me to do with them, use them for dust rags he he he

Hi ya p1kef1sh
It does seem wasteful to just throw them away but that is what I do I am afraid to say. I wasn't aware that you could compost them. I will look into that, but I am sure they would take a long time to do their thing if you know what I mean. I guess if you can do it with undergarments then it can be done with all sorts of clothing. Let me know if you find anything out for definate!

I know for certain that natural fibres will compost Humbug. But I think that you have to cut them up small and mix them with other stuff rater than throwing them in whole. You should also take them off first! Now won't that be a sight for all the old boys down at the allotment! LOL.

Whilst some may be able to use their discarded underwear as parachutes or to shelter medium-sized Bedouin tribes, I do something akin to your parents in that I use them to polish shoes (I have a lot of shoes!).
I concur that the local clothes bank probably do not want cast off underwear especially if you are not in the habit of washing your cast offs before dropping them off!

Haha here in our house we actually do the same as your mother's. Most of our rags and dusters are old undies. It's quite funny especially when we've got visitors and friends coming over. But that's okay! Better than to throw them out and add to trash, I guess.

yes i remember when my mum would and still does keep my dads jocks as a duster or more dad gets them for rags, i think they work out to be a better size for using to wipe greasy hands on. as for me i bin mine, they are usually worn out by the time i get rid of them. and i'm not keen on giving them away.

I use all cotton underwear for cleaning windows and dusting or I send them to the charity shop they cry out for underwear,so many people have nothing ,I was surprised at first. It has nothing to do with being hard up it is a case of not wasting a thing..I only send off my sons boxers to the charity shop as he grows out of them so quick there is nothing wrong with them and if they will do some other young lad a turn.I don't really think we haves really understand what it is like to have nothing. Can you really imagine what it must be like for a homeless youngster to not even have descent underwear it breaks my heart.Send them to the homeless shelter for heavens sake beleave me someone will think it is christmas.

As my underwear is mostly indecent by the time they come to the end of their effective life I doubt that even those with nothing would seriously want them. I daren't expect some nice lady to sort them in the charity shop either. I have occasionally seen bras on sale in Oxfam stores etc. I don't know if anyone ever buys them though. I know that I don't! LOL. And before you ask may I suggest that you peruse the photos on my Profile page. Yes that's me in a bra! LOL.

Hmmm... why not wait till there are such huge holes in them so that you can drive a fist through one? Or in other words, why not wait till there is no underwear left, only a bunch of holes? You won't mind tossing them into the trash can then. And, of course, you won't have to rip them up into tiny pieces if you want to make compost out of them. Alright... alright.. I will try and talk sense...LOL!! I really dunno Pikey. I just toss them into the trash can. I hate old underwear.
Cheers and happy Mylotting

I'm afraid I just put ours in the bin. I don't want to use them for cleaning or dusting, thanks! My son was horrified to find his boss's wife's knickers in the cleaning cloth bin when he first started work and had to do maintenance on the machinery - he came home quite aghast. I wash them first - then bin them. End of.

Pretty basic here Pikefish, in the bin with them. But I do save my sons white tshirts for tacking mouxla with (mould to you) and for passing out to men who come round to unblock the outside drains to wipe their hands on, for some reason they expect me to give them a tea towel. I keep trying to convince them to use the outside tap instead but an old rag they want an old rag they'll get.

I think with it was always made useful! You can cut the bottom of the knickers stich one end embroidering it you can use it as an letter bag or cloth bag in your living room or kitchen.upper part you can wear as 3/4th trousers, isn't a good idea rather throwing it away.

Hello my friend
This is funny because I threw out a pair this morning (are you watching me) lol, once they lose shape and serve no real purpose I toss them without a second thought, never thought about cutting them up, anh I will continue to throw them away this does not happen often, but when I feel the need throwing them out is the first thing that comes to mind.
When I read this I laughed, too funny my friend.
Thank you.
