There are lots of things out there that you can make as a gift for someone, there are painted glasses as well as you can do painted vases, you could buy second hand vases off ebay as well as at sales and put your own design or their name on it,you can buy a pack of 6 glasses and then just get the glass paints. There is knitted toys for children the patterns can be picked up cheeply from the internet as well as the wool.Other than that i do not know as alot of things cost to get the stuff what you need to use to begin with so it may end up the same cost as a gift.

You can also etch the glass at home.
I don't know where you live or if you know these stores, but you can buy a set of glass plates at Walmart for $20.
And then get a roll of clear vinyl drawer liner. The kind that is sticky on one side.
Then got to Hobby Lobby, or Michaels, and buy a jar of gless etching solution.
Then you draw out a simple design on the vinyl and then cut it out like a stencil.
then peel the backing off the vinyl and stick it to the glass. Then coat with the solution.
It's simpler than it sounds.

hi there. i hope u can get some of these:
drawing portraits or caricatures- i used charcoal for it. gave it to my brother, his own face. the caricature i gave to my friend's oma in a dutch costume, knitting. or a charcoaled drawing i gave to my friend, i burned the sides and put some marks to make the paper looked very old. well, it doesn't cost much but took a lot of effort. personal and special. merely used paper or white cardboard and my nephews' coloring stuff.
old pictures attached in a personalized greeting card for my parents or grand parents. i made only some of the designs but i let all the members (siblings, nephews, cousins, helpers) wrote their lovely messages on it. surprised that my 7 year old nephew got hidden talents in art!
if not feasible, try to look on ur old stuff like colors or scissors or any childish things that u can get right now. hope it can get u some ideas. it's really fun! good luck and enjoy! :)

hello doormouse,
actually you can make a lot of things out of trash. like the empty bottles, you can paint, add colored yarns or wet papers or newspapers and make a decoration from it. you can use that as a vase.
or if you have time, try to watch a show regarding this like - DIY. you'll learn a lot of ideas there. need not to give expensive gifts, it's the thought that counts a lot. they will appreciate it more especially when you made them by yourself.

I received a cross stitched bag last year and I think it's a nice one because it is something personalized but if you gonna do this, I think you should start stitching now. I think this is time consuming especially if you want a very detailed design but if you elect to just stitch names then it would be very easy.
The one I received has a teddy bear and my name on it and is quite cute.
You can also make cute cellphone accessories and just buy beads and strings.
Hope you can decide now to start working on it.

Advance happy holiday..
It is so sweet of you to do so. Well how about a basket filled with herbal products, home-made desserts or simply shabby chic ornaments such as laced pillows.

What I often do is I buy plain wooden photo frames, mostly from IKEA where they cost 1 euro for three, and then I paint them, put stickers on them, etc. Simply just decorate them and give them out as presents. I also make my own greeting cards.
If you have some spare fabric, even old but in a good condition, you can make pillows by sewing the fabric together and stuffing it with sponges for example.

Well the records can also be made into groovy lampshades, Plastic Mardi Gras beads work well too just remember to leave the windows open with a fan going because of the fumes. I knit socks for everyone each year and although it has become a family joke if I didn't make for someone they would get upset. I also make cup cozies or teapot cozies, hair accessories and candles. My cousin does cookie jars as well as soup jars.

A really nice gift that you can make for people is to knit them a scarf. It's really easy to learn, and you can choose the yarn for the particular kind of person you are making it for. (Like a choose a really fuzzy, soft kind for a girl). It only takes a couple days to knit a scarf and they are really stylish.
Also, you could make bracelets, any kind of jewelry, or a cute shirt. Just buy a white, basic t-shirt ($5) and choose a cool iron-on design, then iron it on. Total cost: $7. You could also try making a photo collage with a frame. Check out the craft section at Hobby Lobby or other art supply stores for tons of great ideas like scrapbooks (that can get expensive, though), decorating flip-flops, and other great ideas.

Sounds like you want to use what you have around you to make somethings. Well first think of what the person at the time likes or maybe collects. Then maybe we could give you some better ideas really. One idea I have is making ornaments for some one who loves christmas like I do. You can make all kinds of different ornaments out of lots of things. One example of an ornment is pinecones and maybe add some glitter for sparkle. Dreamcatchers are dood ideas for people who like or collect them and can be made from some simple things around you like feathers from birds, chickens and such. Then you could if you have small kids to make for you could make what my daughter learned to last night at her Jr. Homemakers meeting and that was no sew bags/purses. here is how you make them.
get two bandanas,
cut a 1 inch strip all the way around them keeping the strip in one pieace
then take the 2 fold one side down about an inch and iron them.
put them opposite way with the fold inside si the back is in the middle and about 1 inch down right past the fold start making cuts about an inch in just enough for knotting them after words. at each bottom a square will be taken out for the curve.
now for the strap take the pieces you cut at beginnning and cut them in half and them you should have 4 pieces take 3 of them and tie them together at top and braid them and tie at bottm that will become the strap once bag is ready for it.
Take the strap and on each side of the top where fold is put the strap in between the cuts you will tie now double knot them and continue knotting the cuts alll the way around then strech the sides to make the bag square looking. now bag is ready for use. hope this is an idea that will help you.

...Hi doormouse, I am into writing, and I believe in letting people know,, hiw you feel about them in a positive way. So for those in your family who are old enough to appreciate it, you could write a poem for each of them, individualizing each one. You don't have to rhyme the words, you can write them in free form verse. If you write them, you should then type them up, maybe on colored paper and perhaps put them in frames. Small frames are more personal. If I think of anything else I will write you. Hope this helps a bit. Take care.

It's a good idea to prepare the presents by yourself, you can sew something eg. flower, brand or logo in your presents after buy the wire, in China, the sewing is fashion, buy the colourful wire and sew one animal, flower or other worthy goods as a present. do you have this kind of sew in your place? but I think it needs time to sew.

You can always make 3D photo frames out of card and paint up nice and jazzy with some old wacky photos, great for brothers and sisters or old friends that you haven't seen for a while.
Photos are a great way of giving something special in many ways, parents and grandparents may appreciate something more of a photo selection, especially if the family doesn't get together very often - basically just get a load of individual photos and stick them all together on a piece of card and frame it xxx

It really depends on what materials you can get your hands on.
I've made a few lamps out of dried gourds.
Cost about $5.00 for the cord and a light buld from Lowes.
Bird houses or feeders from gourds are very easily made and weigh nest to nothing.
You could make wreaths from grapevines, then glue colored leaves to them. Use freshly cut grapevine,or honey suckle vine to formthe wreath. Collect leaves, let them dry a day or tow and then iron them between 2 pieces of wax paper to preserve them. Maybe buy some of those cinnimon scented pine cones and wire them into the wreath.

You could go to a craft store and buy some items made out of wood. They have birdhouses, end tables, jewlery boxes. . .almost anything. Get some of those things and some wood stain or paint and a gloss. Paint or stain the item and then put a layers of gloss over it, sand it with sandpaper and then put another layer and it will come out real nice.
