What SHOULD the government be more involved in? What should it NOT be in?

I keep hearing that the government should only be involved in "the common defense" of the country. We are on the verge of the government (read federal government) will be involved in much more... what do you think of their role in providing health care to millions more people? the FDA regulating the tobacco industry? the Fed regulating banking and investments more closely? (fill in the blank here)? Remember, the government works for us, eh?

The preable of the US Constitution defines that pretty well: ~Establish justice: The courts and the rule of law establish a system of justice to elevate our nation beyond base revenge and mob rule. ~Insure domestic tranquility: The federal government is SUPPOSED to support community standards so that people can co-exist in peace. For this reason the federal government is SUPPOSED to protect our rights to move around freely, so we can live in communities of people who we can get along with. It is also supposed to protect our right to effect change where we live. ~Provide for the common defense: The federal government is supposed to maintain a position of strenth in the world (both diplomatically and militarily) do deter those who might attack us; to repel any attacks; and to wage war when it is deemed necessary. ~Promote the general welfare: The welfare of We the People in general can only be promoted by a federal government willing and able to take it's place in the checks and balances of We the People, the States and the Federal Government. Liberty is threatened if either side exercises undue power or authority over the other 2. Notice is says, "general welfare", nothing in the US Constitution authorizes the Federal Government to take from one person to hand out to any other. ~Secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity: This means the federal government has NO AUTHORITY to threaten the liberty of any citizen (or any future citizen). They're entire roll in life is to ensure liberty, to violate that is to violate the nation.
