Nowadays even pirated DVDs are so clear and much much cheaper.
Would you rather pay more and buy the original or pay less to
watch the illegal pirated DVDs? At Malaysia night market - a
pirated VCD only cost RM5 and pirated DVD cost RM8-10. (USD1= RM3.5)
How about genuine LV handbag and imitation ones?
This evening I had a conversation with a dealer on office supplies.
He mentioned that many consumers prefer to use compatible printer
cartridges, fax toner because it is much cheaper. How about you?

hi Iriene.. I have the 'cheaper' version DVD... but for handbags, normally I buy those genuine ones.. so since can't really afford those genuine bags, I buy only once in a blue moon and use them pass all the seasons!
As for those compatible electronic items, I sometimes buy them too!

Dear cwong77,
I was having my dinner at Lala Chong seafood restaurant
just now. It is full house. Have to wait for seat..
I thought economy slow down, looks like it don't apply on food :)
Just wonder is there any 'compatible' food ???
There is fantastic demand for those 'cheaper' version DVD.
Nigh market having so many stalls of it, even while sitting
at the Chinese coffee shop, food court...those DVD seller will
approach us. Have you heard that the police/traffic enforcement
officer are doing spot check on cars for pirated DVDs?

Dear cwong77,
Thanks for sharing on those 'artificial egg yolk'!
I do eat some mooncake lately. I noticed something like egg yolk
but do not taste like egg yolk. I think that was something like
some 'csutard like' ingredient. Just wonder what is it!
I still prefer those plain lotus seed (plenty seed) moon cake or
pandan flavour lotus seed moon cake! Taste nice and not so sweet...
Thanks and have a great weekend

hahah Iriene, I don't think we have the compatible food.. however if those artificial ones considered? Do you know during the mooncake festival, while I was making mooncake for sale, my brother's friend came to my house, and was asking if I am keen to use those 'artificial' egg yolk.
Those yolk does not need any more pre-baking, and I can just use it into the mooncake. I was really amazed with this, however I told him no need as I wanted genuine ingredient for the mooncake and not those 'don't know' what make those yolk.
Well, it seems this is what the other commercial is using..

Who will buy originals when good compatibles cost just a fraction of a price. If the manufacturers want us to buy original VCDs, they and the original singers should support the fans by lowering down the price. Don't make too much money. After all they are multi-millionaires.
In business it is a two-way affair they give in some by selling cheaper. In turn the fans will support by buying originals. If not why buy originals when it is so expensive?
As for office suppliers, these compatibles printer cartridges and fax toners are very much cheaper and most of all they are as good.If genuine can price at a fair price, then I may consider.

It's really based on what type of printer you are using, I have a HP inkjet printer and I've already refilling it for almost 2 years, there are some problems but it can be corrected by simple solutions, the only downside is the frequency of refilling.
The cost of original cartridge are more than the cost of a new printer, the reason is that the ink cartridge included in a new printer is only introductory, which means less than the separate one, I was really curious why its OEM cartridge has more ink than the included one, to satisfy my curiousity I really open a introductory ink cartridge and find out that it has a division inside which contain nothing but space so less ink can be filled.

I admit I buy pirated CD. Mostly movies. Because the price of one ticket in the movie theatre is $4 and the pirated CD only cost $1. If I will watch in theatre the amount will be $4 times 3 of course I include my brother and sister so that will be $12 plus the food that we will eat let us say $3 for us three that sum up $15. But if I will buy pirated CD $1 that saves me $14. And it also saves me from safety because I am in the comfort of my home. About things like bags or dress, I can use imitation but I mostly trusted branded ones if it allows my budget to buy it. In our office , the office supply are all comes from branded names. For them branded names are with quality and with good customer service than pirated ones. For me imitation and Pirated things can save you but you can bet for its quality compare to branded and genuine one.

Dear Grecy,
You are absolutely right. A trip for a movie at the the cinema is no more
cheap nowadays. In certain cinemas in Malaysia, there are platinum room
which cost RM40 per person (USD12), comes with blanket and nice sofa set.
Normal ticket is RM10 (USD3). Popcorn and coke easily cost RM10 too.
I normally will look out for free movie tickets. Oh yes, for office equipments
normally purchaser will go for original consumables like original HP ink cartridge,
for beeter quality print and also it is a must for equipment under warranty period.
Thanks for sharing, I am really enjoying reading your response

Well in case of home use then I will prefer pirated version. Let me explain, I use home pc for only entertainment purpose and if I want to buy Windows Vista operating system then in Indian Rupees it cost Rs.11000($230 approx) where as pirated one will hardly be a Rs.100 to 500. I do not want any service packs from microsoft, so, I disable it and use the OS for only playing PC games and watching movies.. So, for that purpose do I need to pay that much money. Soon another OS will be released and this OS will become an out dated one and one need to buy an OS again. So, piracy cannot be stopped until the software companies sell the software according to that contry standard of living. In USA $200 will be like Rs 200 for Indians. But when this $200 is converted into indian Rupees then it will become Rs 10000. So, software companies have to fix the price tag for Indians around 2000 to 5000 maximum. More than that no one will show interest in buying OS.
I will see for cheap product and do not think about branded or costly one. I only think whether my purpose is served or not.. that's all...

Dear madhuvamsi,
You are indeed a very practical person.
In Malaysia, many home users also use those
pirated OS too. However, for my case I use
the original VISTA because it was decided
by my husband and his nephew looking at the
anti-pirated issues.
You have a very good point, after conversion
from USD, the price of original OS is really
'not affordable' for basic homeuse. Many University
students also use those 'non-genuine' OS. However, I
remembered, the Malaysia authority aimed for those
commercial use to purchase the genuine OS.
Thanks for sharing and take care :)

Wow, 30-50 movies for the price of one??
That is really really CHEAP!
No wonder the pirated DVDs seller are doing
very well. I do watch some animation movies
on pirated DVD which my husband bought for my
son. But lately we do not buy any as we prefer
to watch movies in the cinema.
Recently, Malaysia has enforce the law on pirated
DVD. Previously they only catch the pirated DVD
seller. Now, they will check on cars with pirated
DVD. If got caught, it will fine RM40 (or RM400)
per DVD. Can't remember the fine that need to be
paid if got caught. This is to deter consumer to
buy those pirated DVDs.

despite the ban on pirated DVDs and the raids made on the sellers and copiers of these DVDs, they later go back to the business. government needs to do stronger efforts to eradicate this.

Dear Suren,
How much does a pirated DVD cost at your place?
There are young girls who carry loads of pirated
CDs, VCDs and DVDs came to food stall, coffee shops
and asked us whether we are interested on those CDs
despite many campaigns on 'fight piracy' launched
nationwide. The impact is so little due to the
convenience and cheaper price that the pirated version
can offer. Many movies will only out after 3 months on
original DVD after the movie screening on the cinemas.
But, amazingly those pirated at times available
earlier before it is shown in the cinemas.

Since I don't buy many dvd's, I would prefer to buy the originals. My belief is they last longer and really are a better quality dvd. Unfortunately, my printer is broken so I don't have one at home. We stopped buying cartridges so if I have something that really needs to be printed, I forward it to my husband at his office and he prints it out. I never actually paid for a cartridge since my husband would order it and pay for it from his office account. Am lucky in this respect.

Dear carolbee,
Those good movies like Transformers, Chicken Little, and 'Night
at the Museum', I too will bouhgt the original for my son as a
birthday present for him since he will truly value it.
Yes, you are truly lucky, your husband company pay for your
printer cratridges. Since you hardly do printing, it is wise
just to get your hubby to print it once in awhile.
Talking about the printer ink cartridge, I had a bad experience.
My previous Epson printer was perfect. I was using the genuine
ink cartridge for one year. Due to the high cost of the genuine
ink cartridge, I decided to use the compatible since the warranty
period over. I really REGRET it! Just 2 days using it, it
spoilt the printer head, send repaired twice, RM80 each time. The 3rd
time send in, beyond repaired. I have to puy a new printer. It is
really not worth it.
Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend

Iriene88,
As for me, I would always be buying originals, be it designer goods or music albums. I feel that this is just being fair to the original manufacturers and not forgetting designers or artistes.
Speaking of accessories like ink cartridges for our printers, I just felt that we should also be buying the originals than OEM or compatibles. One of the reason being that it will not unnecessarily damage the printer. I have had previous such encounters where these compatible cartridges damaging my printer. And that damage was so extensive, I had to purchase a new printer to replace.
It is just being safe than sorry at the end of the day for me here.

Iriene88,
Well, I think your experiences with your inkjet printer really hit the nail there.
These compatibles are in my opinion "penny wise, pound foolish" and it is just not worth the trouble at the end of the day. Besides, I do not know about Epson, but at HP we can use our ink cartridge's boxes to change for their monthly vouchers which can range from Breadtalk confectionary to supermarket vouchers. Though, it may be insignificant to be really much of a mention but I think this company has done a relatively good job in the area of customer service and encouraging their end users to use original accessories.
As for music albums, I feel that getting pirated versions or downloads are just asking for trouble. How lucky can one get when the news are reporting of hefty fines and even jail sentences for copyright infringements?
Frankly, I'd rather try my luck with the local lottery than the authorities if you know what I mean. On one end, we are getting money from the host, whilst at the other end we are paying out money and getting ourselves entangled with the law.
Lastly, about designer goods, we can get a lifetime complimentary servicing like cleaning, polishing or repairs on our purchased handbags, wallets and other leather accessories which is quite a value for the money we spent. Also, we get to be invited to their launch parties or social or sporting events on a complimentary basis, too. Also, with the anti piracy lookouts, I just cannot imagine myself getting into another legal tussle with these companies. It's just not worth it.

I am a big supporter of all creative industries, be it music, movies or designer items. A lot of work and effort goes into creation, and I respect that and believe that they should earn significant income. But the problem is that the income that they earn, for example from one movie, is also from people that in a lifetime wouldn't earn that kind of money. Another thing is that all of these commodities are soo overpriced. For a lot of people it is a luxury to own a original movie or music CD. Not to mention designer items or artwork. And to be honest, there are rarely any good movies made lately, but still Angelina is making millions.
Luckily, nowadays almost anything is available as digital download at a lot cheaper price which most can afford. Also there are a lot of sites where you can watch TV series without paying a dime, or for a small membership fee. So concerning all this, I would always go for the original, but in a digital download format.

Yes they are cheaper to buy but in the long run it turns out to be very costly affair.
Compatible printer cartridges doesn't give required quality for a good length of period and more over you risk the quality of your printer. Hence it is better to go for original. What ever you have paid initially you will get it back through the quality of your work and it lasts long. The life of your printer also well protected.
Same case with the DVDs. We have a small group of friends. All of us buy original DVDs of different movies and then we do internal circulation. This way our expenses get reduced and we can enjoy the best all the time.

circulation of the DVDs, you all can enjoyed high quality
picture. Great job, keep it up

Hi Iriene.. I condemn those manufacturers of pirated and imitated goods. These create a negative impression on buying the branded ones. Branded costs more than the pirated (as you stated). Pirated and imitations of merchandise kills the economy. The original manufacturer will be deprived of its real revenue from its sales. Basically, people will buy more of the pirated. At present, pirated or imitation are more saleable and looks the same as the original ones. People doesn't care about the quality as long as it is the same as the original one, then it can be sold like hotcakes. Let us fight piracy and imitation of merchandise to have quality products in our market. happy lotting..

Why pay when you can get it for free. I watch most movies on the internet. And my TV shows, well, just wait an hour or two and they're up on the net as well. Quality's good, no high priced theaters to go to, and I can smoke a stogie while I watch and not have to worry about a crying kid.
I do this with software and, well, pretty much any digital product out there. As a developer, I understand the desire to want to be reimbursed for your time and effort in creating something, so if they really wanted to prevent piracy, they should up the anti. Fight fire with fire.
When I develop software, I know that it'll just end up on pirate sites, so I beat them to the punch. Put the software up there, but make it a demo, or preview. They can do the same, but don't.
As for clothing, I remember when Tommy knockoff jeans were all the rage in Southern California. Nobody knew the difference, and really, what difference does it make? Tommy really wasn't going to make money on the Mexican family of 12 that's only willing to spend $5 on a pair of jeans anyways.

Dear aprylmay,
Welcome to myLot. You have a unique username.
You are really wise to watch free movies on the internet.
That can really save a lot, money and time, Great job.
Oh yes, I was surprised too. When I went to Bangkok, Thailand.
There are many imitation 'Versace' t-shirt. Selling at RM20 per
piece. I remembered when I am in the capital city (Kuala Lumpur)
I won a RM300 Versace vouchers. So I redeem it to buy a Versace
t-shirt, it cost me RM290.00 (USD1 = RM3.5). Both look equally good
and I personally can't tell the difference :)
Thanks for sharing, hope to hear your views on my other topic too.
