Are you superstitious? What would you do if you broke a mirror? Is there something you can do to keep from having bad luck if you break a mirror.
I am not really that superstitious, but my grandmother was. She was 85 years old when she passed away and was still very superstitious. She used to tell if I broke a mirror that to keep from having bad luck I had to take the mirror to the north side of a pine tree and bury it and never go back there. Or at least I think that is way she told me. I can't remember and now my own mother is 84 years old and she can't remember exactly the details. Does anyone here in mylot have a superstitious? Do you know the superstition about the broken mirror? I would love to hear from anyone. Have a great day here on mylot.

I am superstitious. I am a hindu, and according to our hindu mythology, if you break a mirror particularly on a Friday, you are bound to have bad luck for seven years. About 30 years ago, a servant broke a mirror on a Friday in my house, and believe it or not, we were having bad luck for the next few years. Since I was quite young at that time, I did not count whether the bad luck was for 7 years or less. The point was we had bad luck for a few years. Some may say it is a co-incidence and we have had bad luck even without the broken mirror.
As far as solutions for the bad luck are concerned, we do not have any solutions, and there is only the bad luck to be suffered.

Right now I can recommend only Ramayana and Mahabaratha as the two epics, which contain a lot of Hindu Mythology. Of course even though we Indians and Chinese share so many things in common including the countries borders. We are at each others throat for the last few decades. I do not know when we will be having good relationship or we are going to nuke each other to kingdom come.
You are lucky that you had good rain and strong winds. It is very hot in here, and there has been no rain for the last so many months. I hope it starts to rain here soon.

I think I should begin reading Hindu mythology. Any work you can suggest? As to breaking a mirror on a Friday and having bad luck for several years, I sympathize with the person put in such a predicament. Much of his life could be lived unhappily. The Chinese has so many countermeasure for bad luck. But of course I also couldn't believe in those. To me, each day is a blessing. If the sun shines bright, I am move on the cheerful side. It is a blustery day today and my country had been trampled by strong rains and gusty winds. But the people are still smiling whilst cleaning up the mess of garbage and mud flood. Life goes on.

Wish I could handle an epic now. My eyes are not so good anymore. But I will try to browse. Just remember that myths are just myths. A person's life is still destined according to how he handles himself. We become what we are through are own doing. And hey, that till kingdom come line got me laughing . But I realized the Dalai Lama's plight and his people's disorientation is no laughing matter. The global warming had already posed a serious threat about the eradication of humanity. We could do without nukes actually.

Some say if you break a mirror it can caused bad luck. They say that if you broke it wrap it with black cloth and throw it away this can help prevent the bad luck that comes into your life. But for me I am really not a believer on this. It is a matter of poisoning your mind. If you keep thinking that it is bad luck then it really cause that thing because you are thingking that way. But if you are a positive thinker that you really think that it is not a bad luck then definitely its not. It is only a superstitious belief. You must go on to grow.

Thank you for your response, johnryanr. I try to be a postive thinker. I have not really given the broken mirror much thought. But, now my grandmother was totally different and she really believed these superstitions. There are too many of them. Have a great day.

In Christian doctrine, superstitions are sins. So, we have to avoid entertaining the repercussions should we fail to adhere to the tradition. For example, they say that a broken mirror is bad luck. But in the olden days, all it entails is to be careful in picking the broken glass because you might hurt yourself. As to refraining using an umbrella inside the house, they caution you not to do it because there might be a cockroach inside.

Thanks for the information on opening an umbrella inside the house. I have always wondered about it. Many people have also commented about the broken mirror, like what you have responded.
As a Hindu, I have given my response, and I hope you will read it and comment on that. When you are young, you do not believe in superstitions, but once you reach middle age, you start looking at all these things.

I don't believe in superstitions and in the other way, I am not a superstitious. If I can break a mirror or a glass, then I consider it an accident. The luck will definitely depends on you. I don't believe in bad luck or whatever some people in mind. Your luck is totally all by yourself.

I agree with both of you. I think it is just an old wives tale, too. I am not superstitious about everything. Sometimes you just have bad luck no matter what you do. Things happen. Thank you both for your comments. Have a great day.

If you follow superstitions there is no stopping. There are so many things you are not supposed to do that it would be difficult to carry on living normally if you followed all of them.So it is better not to follow any such thing and carry on normally. If a broken mirror could give you 7 years of bad luck there must me something that can give you 7 years of good luck as well. How come no one talks of them .I would love to follow that and have endless good luck!Carry on being what you are and stop believing in such superstitions.Good luck!

Hi sweetbaby,
Superstitious are not uncommon in each and every place. But I think those are made of with good intentions. In other words the main aim of superstition is to make you to a perfect person. I will explain how. Those people who believe in GOD can obey certain things if it is conveying in a devotional way. Take the example of your broken mirror, if you keep a broken mirror at home it can be dangerous by wounding you in any manner means the possibilities are high. If somebody asked to keep away the mirror just for your safety you won’t bother it. But the message is conveying you in way, it will give you bad luck, you will definitely think and hesitate to keep the same at home, even if you are not superstitious. I think you understand it well, what I am trying to say.
I am not superstitious but definitely I won’t keep a broken mirror at home just for the safety of my kids.

Thank you for your comment, Sreekala. I have gotten rid of the mirror and will think no more about it. I understand now how the superstition began long ago. I don't believe in the superstitions myself, just wanted to hear how other viewed them. Happy Mylotting.

Hi friend!
My dear, I am and will never be bothered by superstitious belief. The word of God has given me the assurance that superstitious belief are not of importance and should not in anyway affect the way I live my life. I have broken countless mirrors in my entire life and never did I associate that to bad luck. Whenever I broke mirror I take it as as normal circumstance just as I always do when I break drinking glasses or any fragile things. But to say it has given me any bad luck at all, NEVER .I don't believe breaking any mirror has anything to do with bad luck. It the first place I also do not believe in luck (good or bad) because God's Word, the Holy Bible does not in anyway confirm the idea of things occurring by chance. Everything is but under God’s sovereign control. It's either he allows or he himself brings things to occurrence to keep his divine plan for me and for anyone else for that matter.
Colossians chapter 2 verses 6 to 9 clearly states:
6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him,
7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.
So my friend, though I can tell you different superstitions about broken mirror I think I'd rather not but would rather just tell you one important thing. Just don't mind those broken mirrors. Throw them away neatly and safely so it can't hurt anyone. It does not have any power neither does it signify any bad luck at all and that is for sure. Take it from my experience. I've broken countless mirrors already but nothing bad every occurred to me out of those broken mirrors.
I don't allow my life to be negatively affected by broken objects or any man-made circumstances. I only allow the one true God who gives my present life and my eternal life to take care of every circumstance and every minute of my existence. I can never be captive by hollow and deceptive superstition which rooted from ignorant human tradition.
Have a blessed day

Hey sweet! I wish you could remember what the details were! lol
I have broken some many mirrors that it's not funny! If I really
believed in superstitions then I could blame my whole life on
those broken mirrors! But, I think that my bad luck started
long before I started breaking the mirrors!lol I don't know
what you are supposed to do if you break a mirror, but I have
a friend whose Grandmother had all those "cures" or whatever
you call them and when he calls me the next time I will be
sure to ask him if his Mother might know the answer to that
question!

The way I understand it is if you break a mirror you will have 7 years bad luck. Well it has been a while since I broke a mirror in one year I broke 3. It has been a least 30 years since I broke them so my luck should be changing pretty soon I hope. I guess you would say I might be a little superstitious.

Our elders believe in that superstition as well. Although I don't believe on the bad luck it may bring, still I follow some advices from my grandparents. There is nothing to lose by doing it anyway.:) But I don't know why I got scared sometimes when I glance on a broken mirror. Maybe because of the horror films that features a scene with a broken mirror and soul on it. LOL. Here in my country, there a so many beliefs and superstition but it slowly fade away and only few believes in it as time goes by. Have a great day too!

I think if you believe you will have bad luck, it comes. When something like that happens, say a pray a positive one. You can also run cold water for a few minutes, it is said that breaks the negative vibes brought from broken glass.

I'm not in to supertitions actually. I used to when I was young but things change in my outlook in the process of growing as I am exposed to life. If some people in the family insists on believing in superstitions and demand that we follow too, then I can readily follow them not because I believe but for the sake of preserving peace in the family. It doesn't hurt anyway.
Have a great day.

I'm not superstitious about broken mirrors but in Feng Sui, mirrors may help bring good luck depending on where it is placed. A broken mirror should be thrown away but I'm not particular of the chants to ward off the bad luck. The mirror used to catch demons or benevolent spirits should be broken down to pieces. I think the best way to counter bad luck is to condition your mind to positive thinking, not on the negative stuff attributed to something.
