It seems to me that I get more money if I post in the hot section as opposed to no responses

What are you saying? There is no way you can post it to hot or anywhere. All you can do is to start a new discussion & it will go to the category depending on the rating & responses it gets. If you post is of good quality, it will go to top discussions or to hot. If your discussion is not up to the mark & if none responded to it, it will go to no responses.
You won't earn anything if no one responds to your discussion.
You will only earn by making good posts with Quality & Quantity. You can earn by making new posts, responding to discussions or by commenting.

Two responses or one response + one comment will mean that you discussion has earnt for you.
After that the rest of the responses will not earn for you unless you go back and comment on them. Those who post them will earn for them.

Diana said it right. You must also remember that the more comments you give to your responses, the more will you earn.

Thats an interesting question. I would suppose so because MyLot earning info does say that the more poeple you get to respond to your discussion - The more you will earn. But then again, Who knows.

I believe that we get paid the same no matter where we respond. Your friend may have left a better quality response in the hot topic discussions and that would explain why they received more cash.
